A Dying Critic

Father in heaven, I want to thank you so much that we came and gather here again this afternoon we're gonna ask again for your mercies for your blessings and I want to pray and Like Philip show us the father and we know where to look because you told us and we just want to see Jesus today In Jesus name.

I've been thinking a lot, you know, I Was talking to you some of these guys, you know advent hope For Europeans like myself, we don't see the people.

So I've been thinking, of all the messages that I wanted to share, this 1 is the 1 that's closest.

It's the most raw, do you know what I mean?

Because it's not like, it's, I can say it this way, it's come out of pain, do you know what I mean?

So like, in 1 side I just kind of want to hop over it and go to something easier.

But at the same time, I'm like, you know, but this is what I think about.

Before I kind of introduce it, let me say it later.

The title for this is a dying critic a dying critic okay tell me if you know Bible so Psalm 135 Psalm 135 and we're gonna read verse 15 to 18.

Psalm 135, Psalm 135, And verse 15 to 18.

The Psalmist is reflecting on idolatry actually, of all things.

But we're gonna learn a principle which I think is very true.

Idolatry, a bad thing, but the principle seems to be very true.

Okay, so Psalms 135 and I'm reading from verse 15 It says the idols of heathen are Silver gold the work of men's hands they have mouths but they do not speak.

Neither is there any breath in their mouths.

You see the picture that the Psalmist is painting?

They have a mouth which they can't speak.

But in the psalmist makes an application, which I think is so, so interesting.

So he's like, and I think this is the real issue of idolatry, is that those who trust in the idols become like 1.

So now the point I want to take out from this is not so much about idolatry, but it's this is that You become what you think God is like.

People think that gods are stone, so they become like stone, right?

And it's kind of maybe easy as we, assuming you don't believe in idols, we're like, we're free from that.

Well, no, because the principle still exists.

You're going to become like the picture of God you have.

And I was speaking to a friend about this, And it seems like this idea that man was created in the image of God is almost prophetic in the sense or In the sense that yes God Adam and Eve were created in the image of God And then we have this change in in in Genesis chapter 5 that that Seth Was born in in the image of Adam, right?

But especially from this verse also, you kind of have this tension that you're always in the image of God.

The question is just what image do you have?

And I want to talk more about this, is that you will become like the image of God you have.

I became most aware of this when I entered into the relationship with my now wife.

We're married, so it's not like I destroyed, everything, that's not the case.

But before our engagement, a problem arised to the surface.

My wife, now wife, but I just call her my wife, She didn't feel good enough for me.

And I realized that I was a critical boyfriend.

It's not that I would say, oh, what you're wearing?

So that, you know, that kind of blatant level of, but thinking about it deep down, where even when she wasn't around, I was holding things against her.

She, being the more intelligent, emotionally intelligent person, realized this before me.

So she would communicate this to me and say, I don't feel good enough.

Not realizing the patterns of thinking in my mind where I'm actually holding maybe some real things, but mostly imagined things against her.

When I realized this, how do you think I reacted?

So it's not like I have something to hold against her, right?

The point is that I am hurting the 1 person I do not want to hurt.

I'm sitting there, and I'm thinking, let me not hold, let me try and not be critical.

Let me not try and hold something against it.

What I realized is that I was living out relationally what I was living spiritually.

I thought that God held things against me.

And because I thought that, why would I treat you differently?
