We've been going through a series called Cover to Cover, Seeing Jesus in All of the Bible.

Now, just a little review because some maybe haven't read it or you weren't here last week.

Joseph was the firstborn son of Jacob's wife, Rachel, but he was not the firstborn son.

But Jacob loved Joseph more than all his children because he only wanted 1 wife and that was Rachel, beautiful Rachel.

Rachel must have also been a very good woman in many ways because her early training for Joseph, she died in childbirth for Joseph's younger brother, Benjamin, but that early training must have been something extraordinary because Joseph grew up to be an extraordinary man with great scruples.

But Jacob, when Reuben was misbehaving, Reuben had an affair with Jacob's, 1 of his concubines, and he said Reuben, who was technically the firstborn, could not have the right of the firstborn.

He gave Joseph this beautiful coat of many colors, and that made the other brothers jealous.

And then he started having dreams, visions of grandeur, that he was gonna be a great ruler and that they would all end up bowing down to him.

He was just so impressed that God had a great destiny for him.

And the Bible says 3 times in chapter 37, they hated him, they hated him, they hated him even more.

So when the father sent Joseph to find out where his brothers were grazing the sheep, he is sent of the father looking for his lost brothers, like Jesus.

They see him coming, and they say, here comes this dreamer, let's murder him and throw him in a hole and say some evil beast has devoured him.

And Reuben stopped them from their purpose and said, he's your brother, don't take his blood, just throw him in the cistern, throw him in the empty well.

And Joseph came, they stripped him of his coat, they threw him in a pit where there was no water, then they sat down to eat.

And then Judah saw a caravan of Ishmaelite traders carrying balm and myrrh down to Egypt.

And he said, hey, why not make a little money?

So let's sell them as a slave and get them out of town.

And no 1 will ever hear from him again in Egypt.

They didn't have the internet back then or Facebook, so they figured he'd just disappear in obscurity.

So they sold Joseph for the price of a slave for 20 pieces of silver.

The Ishmaelites probably took him to Egypt and then sold him for 30 to make a profit.

Joseph then made a resolution of full surrender.

He said, all right, Lord, I believe you gave me those dreams, supernatural dreams, because you have a plan for my life.

You'll find out later that Joseph not only has dreams, he has the ability to interpret dreams.

You think he might have known something about his own dream if he can interpret other people's dreams.

He said, Lord, whatever happens, I'm going to fully surrender and trust you.

You know, friends, if you can get past that decision in your life, your life will be a lot happier.

Whatever happens, you will do your best to serve God, you will do your best to be faithful.

Whatever happens, you're going to trust the Lord And do your best to represent Christ.

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it unto the Lord.

Whether you're a prisoner, whether you're a slave, do all things unto the Lord, wherever God puts you in life.

So he gets down to Egypt, and this is where you take it up with Genesis chapter 39 and he becomes the faithful servant here.

And I'm just going to read the first few verses of this.

Now, Joseph had been taken down to Egypt and there Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, that phrase captain of the guard appears several times in the passage.

Leads us believing from some of the ancient writings and commentators that he actually had the position of being chief of police, also chief of executioners.

Now God deliberately puts Joseph in connection with, well, I guess I didn't finish, Potiphar Byzum.

Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian bought him from the Ishmaelites whom had taken him there.

And so the Lord in his design had Joseph placed, he's 17 years old.

By the way, we can map out the life of Joseph pretty clearly, some ages and dates are given.

He's 17 years old, he's just on the cusp of manhood, old enough to be drafted, but still pretty young.

And they take him to the auction block there in Egypt where the slaves are bought and sold.

And he could have been bought by some potter, shoemaker, anything, but he's bought by somebody who's connected with the palace and the government and science and leaders.

And that was part of God's design because Joseph got a crash course education.

First he had to learn the Egyptian language, which he evidently was very smart because he learned it pretty quick.

You know, when you're young, you can do that.

Have you ever noticed A family will come to the United States from some foreign country and they got like 3 kids.

The kids are all speaking English in 6 months and 20 years later the parents are still struggling.

So Joseph, he quickly picks it up and he's taking in everything and he says, if I'm gonna be a slave, I'm gonna be a good slave.

And you know, later there was a little girl who had been captured by the Syrians and sold into the house of a Syrian general named Naaman.

She said, well, if I'm going to be a slave, I'm going to be a good slave.

And instead of overcoming evil with evil, I am going to seek the evil, I am going to seek the best interests of my masters.

We're actually reading the span of about 10 years in this passage.

He gets there, he learns the language, he's faithful in the little things, they give him more to do, he's faithful in that, they give him more.

The master says, this is the sharpest young man, he's got a great attitude, and everything I give him, you know, there's some people that you give them something and they get it done.

And, you know, they say if you want to get something done, give it to a busy person because they're usually the ones that get things done.

And so probably also learned now how to read hieroglyphics or whatever the Egyptians had back then.

And he's learning the math and the sciences.

And I think he wanted to expand his education, talking to the other servants that worked in the palaces.

The master would sometimes send Joseph off to the market on errands to buy things, because he knew he could trust them.

And in his interchange with the servants of other officials, he was asking questions, he's learning things, He's filling his mind.

He wanted to learn all he could to prepare him for whatever God's destiny was.

I think that's an important lesson that we should do all we can to learn all we can.

You take your earthly education with you to heaven, you know.

Education begins here, goes on through eternity.

And it says, the master made him overseer of all, and He put it under His authority.

So it was from the time that He made Him overseer of His house and all that He had, the Lord blessed the Egyptians' house for Joseph's sake.

And the blessing of the Lord was on all that he had in the house and in the field.

So Joseph learned something about farming too, didn't he?

And all of Potiphar's fields were put under Joseph's authority.

So he learned about managing farms and managing fields.

That was going to help save the world later.

And everything was blessed for Joseph's sake, verse 6.

And thus he left all that he had in Joseph's hand, And he didn't know what he had except for the bread that he ate.

You know, the Bible tells us that if we receive any blessing, we are blessed for Jesus' sake.

When we pray, do we pray that God blesses us for our sake?

Or do we pray that God blesses us for Christ's sake?

Jesus in All the Bible, Pt. 1 – Abraham

We're beginning a new series today that is dealing with the subject of cover to cover, Jesus in all the Bible.

This is going to be a great time I think for us to get a really good panorama of the Bible.

The whole Old Testament is a kaleidoscope that when you focus it, it gives us different facets and pictures of Jesus.

You know, Chameleons are some of the strangest creatures in the natural world.

They look a little bit like they were dropped from an alien spaceship.

1 of the strangest things about a chameleon, their eyes are located on like these rotating turrets and they have 360-degree vision around their bodies.

They can look forwards and backwards at the same time now if you try and do that you're going to look very peculiar their eyes can move independently of each other or when they see something they like, they can focus them in like binoculars, which is why they very rarely miss their prey when they shoot out their tongues.

Now the Bible stories and the Bible history, They're all true and relevant and accurate.

But God has done something miraculous in the Bible in that in the stories you find the gospel echoed through all the characters in the stories of the Bible.

Every story in the Bible you can find the villain, the victim, and you can find the valiant.

In our scripture reading, we gave some verses that helped bear this out, and I want to look at some of those, talking about the types and shadows that we see in scripture.

Now, when Philip first found Jesus, he then goes to Nathanael and what does he say?

We have found him of whom Moses in the law and the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth.

Moses in the law and the prophets wrote about Jesus?

I don't think Jesus appears till the New Testament.

Did they only write about them in a couple of prophecies like in Isaiah when it said the Messiah would come, or when Moses said, the Lord will raise up a prophet like me, Deuteronomy 18?

Or is it all the way from Moses through the prophets?

If you look in John 5, 39, how did Jesus tell us to read the Bible?

He said to the religious leaders, you search the scriptures for in them you think you have eternal life, these are they that testify of me, the scriptures testify of Jesus.

Now there was no New Testament when Jesus said that, So if you want to find out about Jesus, we always think you have to go to the New Testament.

Now, we'll be reading more 1 Corinthians in another presentation.

But Paul here is talking about the exodus and the experience of the Jewish nation.

And he says in verse 11, all these things happen to them as examples.

And the word examples there is tupos in Greek and that word tupos means they are types, they are symbols, and they were written for our admonition upon whom the ends of the ages have come.

I'm sure you know the story, it's only found 1 place in the Bible in Luke chapter 24 when Jesus rises from the dead and of course he appears to the women in the morning.

Later that afternoon before the sun goes down, 2 of the disciples that had been in the upper room, they leave, the name of 1 of them is Cleopas, and they are walking from Jerusalem down to their hometown of Emmaus, it's about 7 miles away.

And as they're walking down the road, they're very discouraged about the crucifixion, of course, and that Jesus' body is missing, and the women have had hallucinations of angels, and they don't know what to think, but they're very downcast.

And as they're walking down this road, a stranger comes and starts to walk alongside them.

The 2 trails merge, and he joins them on the trail, which is very common back then.

You're actually safer if you walk and travel in numbers.

And he's quiet, and he listens to them as they're talking about the devastation of what's happened with Christ's crucifixion and and eventually the stranger who is Jesus, they don't recognize him, he says what manner of communication is this that you have with 1 another as you walk and are sad?

And they said are you only a stranger in Jerusalem?

Have you not heard about these things that happen?

This has been the big thing in the nation and in Jerusalem over the Passover?

As though he didn't know and they said well concerning Jesus of Nazareth who is a man mighty indeed in word and how all the people believed in him and are rulers and turned him over to the Gentiles and they crucified him, and now the women say that he's been resurrected and this is the third day since all those things happened which should have been assigned to him right there because Jesus often said after 3 days he would rise and then Christ finally speaks, He said in Luke 24 verse 25 O foolish ones and slow of heart to believe and all the prophets have spoken Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and entered into His glory?

He was saying this was the plan from the beginning, and notice where he says it, beginning at Moses and in all the prophets he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself, how many scriptures?

Now when Jesus made that statement I want you to know there wasn't a single solitary word of the New Testament written and I think most people miss most of Jesus that is found in the Old Testament as Paul went from place to place and he proved to the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah, what book do you think he used?

He used the Old Testament, and he saw Jesus everywhere and that's how the church grew through reading of Christ's first coming that was prophesied and illustrated in the stories and the teachings of the Old Testament.

Now I've done it before, as most pastors have.

We talk about the Bible and we tell people, this is your owner's manual.

And you've probably used the illustration, B-I-B-L-E stands for basic instructions before leaving earth and that's true but it's not just a list, it's not just an owner's manual this is actually telling us about somebody And you need to know that somebody because eternal life is knowing Jesus.

John chapter 3, John chapter 17 rather verse 3, this is eternal life that they might know thee the only true God and Jesus Christ.

So we're going to be going through some of those now, and we're going to start at the beginning.

Speaking of Jesus, First of all, you notice right away that Jesus had a supernatural birth.

We're reminded every Christmas in those sermons.

There was something supernatural about that.

Both Adam and Jesus are called the sons of God.

If you look in Luke chapter 3, it talks about Enos who was the son of Seth, who was the son of Adam, who was the Son of God.

On Friday, naked, Adam started breathing.

Jesus, naked, breathed his last late on the sixth day of the week.

They both were, this is both on the sixth day.

Adam fell asleep, his side was opened, and his bride came out.

Jesus on the sixth day of the week, they opened his side with a spear, and in the blood and water, the church was born.

Adam was overcome by the serpent, Jesus defeated the serpent.

The dominion was redeemed through Christ's sacrifice and obedience the dominion of the world was lost through Adam's disobedience Adam is created and placed in Eden, Jesus is resurrected in a garden and you read there in John 19.41 now the place where he was crucified there was a garden.

First Corinthians 15 verse 21, for since by man death came, by man also came the resurrection of the dead.

For as in Adam all die, so in Christ shall all be made alive.

Now I'm not always saying here that Adam is a type of Jesus, but when you look at Adam and Jesus, if nothing else you'll see that they are juxtaposed in the Bible, 1 against the other.

Adam fell on the issue of diet in a garden surrounded by a thousand other good options.

Jesus overcame on the subject of diet in a wilderness where he was starving.

The first Adam turned from the Father in the Garden of Eden.

The last Adam turned to the Father in the Garden of Gethsemane.

The first Adam was naked and unashamed in the Garden.

The last Adam was naked and bore our shame on the cross.

The last Adam wore a crown of thorns, last Adam being Jesus.

The first Adam substituted himself for God.

The last Adam was God substituting himself for us.

The first Adam was the head of the old creation, the last Adam is the head of the new creation.

Romans 5 verses 18 and 19, Therefore as through 1 man's offense, judgment came to all men resulting in condemnation even so through 1 man's righteous act the free gift came to all men resulting in justification of life for as by 1 man Adam disobedience many were made sinners so also by 1 man's obedience many will be made righteous." Now, how many of you have noticed that because of the sin of Adam, you struggle with temptation?

Jesus in All the Bible, Pt. 2 – Isaac

When I read through the Old Testament, I sometimes feel like I'm seeing 2 stories at once, because they're all telling us something about Jesus.

Last week, we were talking about Abraham, and we just finished up talking about that magnificent story of where Abraham offered his son Isaac.

And Isaac of course is a powerful example of Christ.

But now we're going to begin with a little side trip because something happens during the life of Abraham, another character is introduced, who the Bible tells us in the New Testament is a type of Christ.

Let me read you what it says here in Hebrews 5, verse 9 and verse 10.

And having been perfected, he, Jesus, became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, called by God as High Priest, according to the order of Melchizedek." It's making a connection here between Jesus and Melchizedek.

And you read about this in Genesis Chapter 14.

The Bible tells us that there were 5 kings from the north that had subdued the kings in the south in southern Israel and the southern kingdoms were paying tribute to the northern kingdoms but they got tired of paying taxes so they rebelled.

So the 5 kings from the north came down and attacked them, including Sodom and Gomorrah, where Lot and his family lived, took them all captive, took all their possessions, brought them back up to the north.

A messenger came and told Abraham that Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities of the plain had been conquered and not only did they take all of the resources, your nephew and his family had been captured.

So, Abraham's got, he's got a very big tribe, he's got 318 trained soldiers in his family and they get together with the confederacy of Mamre and Eshkol, some of the other sheiks and they say, you know, that we can't have this.

They go by night, they attack them, they deliver them, and they not only rescue all the families, they defeat the enemy, but they get all of the bounty of war.

So now Abraham is on his way back, and it tells us, this is where our story picks up, look here in Genesis 14 verse 18 then Melchizedek, king of Salem brought out bread and wine he was the priest of God most high he blessed him and said blessed be Abram of God most high possessor of heaven and earth and blessed be God most high who has delivered your enemies into your hand and he Abraham gave him Melchizedek a tithe of all of all the bounty that was recovered from the war, they gave a tenth, a tithe, and this is 1 of the places you find an example of tithe in the Bible.

So then the big question comes in, you know, who is Melchizedek?

The name Melchizedek means King of Righteousness.

His territory is Salem, later known as Jerushalom, or Jerusalem, which means city of peace.

Do you know another king of a new Jerusalem?

And it says Melchizedek, which means king of righteousness, he gives us a righteous robe, says he brought out bread and wine and blessed.

Can you think of a dinner where Jesus brings out bread and wine and blesses?

It tells us then, Paul tells us in the New Testament, Melchizedek is a type of Christ.

So with that, let's go back to Isaac now.

1 of the things about Isaac, it's a miraculous birth.

To an ancient man, God is called the Ancient of Days.

Isaac was a child prophesied years before he was born.

Isaac and Jesus were promised sons that were named before they were born.

You can look here in Genesis 17, 19 then God said no Sarah your wife will bear you a son and you'll call his name Isaac and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant the gospel is called the everlasting gospel that comes through Jesus look of course you all know this Matthew 121 and she will bring forth a son and you'll call his name Jesus and he will save his people from their sins and so you can see the types of Jesus in Isaac there, So he is the son of faith.

So, you know, Sarah suggested, well, I'll give you my Egyptian maid Hagar as a surrogate.

And they were trying to fulfill God's promise in their own strength, using human means instead of the miraculous means.

So you got Ishmael who is like the son of works and the flesh.

Isaac becomes a symbol for the son of faith and the miracle.

It was a miraculous birth as Jesus was a miraculous birth as you must have a miraculous new birth to get into the kingdom, amen?

Thus you're born of the water and the spirit, you cannot enter the kingdom of God.

Now in the life of Isaac, we're going to come back to it, but something very important is he needs to get married.

So as Abraham's getting older and Isaac still hasn't found the right gal because they're surrounded by Canaanites and there's a lot of paganism.

And in chapter 24 of Genesis, We don't have time to read the whole chapter.

It is 1 of, if not the longest chapter in Genesis.

The whole chapter is dedicated to finding the right wife for this promised son who is going to be the progenitor of the covenant race.

And so it tells us that he sends his servant.

Notice in Genesis 24, verse 6 and 7, Abraham speaking to Eleazar.

He says, beware, he's the steward of his house.

He said, beware, you do not take my son back there, do not take Isaac to Babylon he may get anchored back there, you bring her here and he says, you know, the master says go find a wife he says what if the girl doesn't want to come with me, he says, you're free of the oath if she doesn't come, but you do your best.

And fetch a wife from my family that worships my God.

I wish everybody would have that many verses in their Genesis 24 before they got married.

It is real important to the Lord that you pick the right partner in life.

So Eleazar makes that trip across the desert and as he's approaching the town of Haran, he prays a prayer and says, Lord, I don't know where to begin.
