Hunger & Thirst

Some might disagree about winter, but hey, we needed that.

All right, well, before we get started, please indulge me in a habit of mine.

I really like to personally say a prayer before we get started and have our message.

So if you could please bow your heads with me.

Our Father in heaven, Lord, we're assembled here this morning in really your sanctuary, this beautiful outside setting, and Lord, what we need is a message from heaven.

There's darkness in the lives of people we love.

There's darkness even in our own hearts, and we desperately do not need light from heaven.

Please send us your Holy Spirit, teach us this morning, inspire us, strengthen us as we march this pilgrim's way to heaven.

So the title of the message this morning is hunger and thirst.

Several years ago, my wife Jennifer and I, we were hiking not too far from here up on Echo Summit at the Echo Lake hike.

The main hike is on the north side of the lake.

I think I actually might've had even this water bottle, which is, you know, okay for like half a day, but it's really not enough for like a good hike.

And so for the way along the lake we were fine we had water and then we got about 3 miles in we decided to stop turn around and we had realized something we drank all our water on the way to the end of the lake.

So we had all the way back to come back and you know it was only 3 miles so it wasn't that bad but the way it is over there is you're on the north side of the lake so the higher the sun gets the sun just starts baking on that north side of the lake and there's all these big granite rocks and those granite rocks they absorb all that heat and they just start radiating all of this heat from the sun and so you got the sun hitting you then you got the heat from the granite rocks on the other side.

And as we started walking back along the lake, going back to our car, it got hot really fast and it just started baking us.

And for about 2 to 3 miles, we were just getting baked and baked and baked and we had no water.

Anyone ever put yourself in a situation like this before?

Have you ever been so hot and you've been walking your feet start burning in your shoes?

You've been running and it's hot outside and your internal body temperature is getting hot and my head got hot.

And all I could think about for those 2 miles, 3 miles back is water.

My mouth got just totally dry and cotton mouth and I just what I wouldn't give for some water and we hiked and hiked and pushed and pushed and the Sun just baked us and baked us.

Finally, We got back to the end of the lake, towards where you get to the parking lot.

And I didn't even wait to get to the car.

I ran to the edge of 1 of the docks and I plunged my head in that lake.

I just started drinking the water as I didn't.

I survived, obviously, but I just I was so, so incredibly parched and thirsty.

That cold water is running over my face and that cold water just going down my throat.

I was just like, there's nothing like it.

When you get really thirsty, there's nothing like water.

And the title of the sermon is Hunger and Thirst.

And you know the Bible talks about 3 things we should hunger and thirst for.

God, righteousness, which is victory over sin, and others.

And in this sermon we're going to talk about hungering and thirsting after God.

Please open your Bibles with me to Matthew chapter 5.

Matthew chapter 5 and we're gonna put our attention on verse 6.

It says, Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.

The Bible says you can be filled with righteousness.

But did you notice this promise isn't just for anybody?

According to the Bible verse, there's a condition.

What is the condition to be filled with righteousness according to the Bible verse?

Blessed are those that do hunger and thirst after righteousness, they shall be filled.

The Bible promise to be filled with righteousness is only for those who hunger and thirst after it.

You could be filled with righteousness, but you have to want it, and you have to want it bad.

Now, why is it important to be filled with righteousness?

I'll just read to you a few quick verses.

It says in Isaiah 26, verses 1 and 2, We have a strong city.

Salvation will God appoint for walls and bulwarks.

Listen, open ye the gates that the righteous nation that keeps the truth may enter in." You know what gates that's talking about?

It says in Revelation 22, 14, Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they might have right to the tree of life and enter in through the gates of the city." Do you know who gets to go to the kingdom of God?

People who are filled with righteousness.

The righteous, those who do His commandments.

And the beautiful thing is that can be anybody.

It doesn't matter what you're going through.

It doesn't matter what your struggles are.

You could be filled with righteousness if you hunger and thirst after it, if you want it and you want it bad.

And you know there's a lot of people, sad to say, that there's a lot of people that are going to be lost Because they only had a half-hearted desire for God.
