If some self-proclaimed prophet suddenly began attracting crowds with stirring messages, healing the sick, raising the dead, bringing fire down from heaven, and revealing knowledge about your personal secrets, would you believe in them?

Your ultimate destiny could be tied directly to your ability to distinguish between true and false prophets.

Does the Bible really teach that there will be true prophets in the end times?

Acts chapter 2 verse 17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.

The Bible says that both men and women will prophesy in the last days.

Okay, well why did God give his church prophets?

Alright, Jesus gave us these gifts, apostles, evangelists, pastors, teachers, and prophets for the equipping of his saints.

Ephesians chapter 4 verse 12, for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.

The equipping of God's church is not possible if any of these 5 gifts are missing.

You said that both men and women will prophesy, but wasn't the gift of prophecy only given to men?

In addition To men who had the gift of prophecy, God also gave the gift to at least 8 women, Anna, Miriam, Deborah, Huldah, and the 4 daughters of Philip the Evangelist.

Well, how long will the Church have these gifts?

Well, let's turn to the book of Ephesians.

Ephesians chapter 4 verse 13, Till we all come in the unity of the faith, And of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ." These 5 gifts will remain until God's people are all unified, mature Christians, which of course, will be at the end of time.

So Where do true prophets get their information?

For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man, but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

True prophets don't express their own private opinions in spiritual matters.

Their thoughts come from Jesus, through the Holy Spirit.

God speaks to His prophets in 3 different ways.

If there is a prophet among you, I, the Lord, make myself known to him in a vision.

I speak with him face to face." So he uses visions or dreams or he speaks with them face to face.

Okay, so if a true prophet is having a vision, How can you tell?

Well, the Bible gives us some crucial points.

Daniel chapter 10 verse 8, Therefore I was left alone, and saw this great vision, and there remained no strength in me.

For my comeliness was turned in me into corruption, and I retained no strength." When a true prophet goes into vision, they may initially lose physical strength.

Then again, the 1 having the likeness of a man touched me and strengthened me, and he said, O man greatly beloved, fear not.

Peace be to you, be strong, Yes, be strong.

Here we see that a heavenly being is sent to strengthen the prophet.

So after losing strength, they may later receive supernatural strength.

For as for me, straightway there remain no strength in me, neither is there breath left in me.

And suddenly 1 having the likeness of the sons of men touched my lips.

Then I opened my mouth and spoke, saying to him who stood before me, My lord, because of the vision my sorrows have overwhelmed me, and I have retained no strength.

Yet even without strength or breath a true prophet may be able to speak while in vision.

Then I lifted up mine eyes and looked and behold a certain man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Euphaz.

His body also was like the barrel, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in color to polished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude.

And I, Daniel, alone saw the vision, for the men that were with me saw not the vision, but a great quaking fell upon them, so that they fled to hide themselves.

2 Corinthians chapter 12, verses 2 through 4.

I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.

I know a man in Christ who 14 years ago, whether in the body I do not know, or whether out of the body I do not know, God knows.

Such a 1 was caught up to the third heaven, and I know such a man.

Whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows, how he was caught up into paradise and heard inexpressible words, which is not lawful for a man to utter." We can see here that true prophets in vision may be unaware of their earthly surroundings.

The utterance of him who hears the words of God, who sees the vision of the Almighty, who falls down with eyes wide open.

This describes a true prophet as having their eyes open while in vision.

These 6 Bible points provide the physical evidences of a true prophet in vision.

But not all of them always appear together.

A prophet's vision may be genuine without manifesting all 6 evidences at once.

Do they prove that a prophet is from God?

For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles.

He performs great signs, so that He even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men.

And He deceives those who dwell on the earth by those signs which He was granted to do in the sight of the beast.

Deuteronomy chapter 13 verses 1 through 3.

If there arises among you a prophet or a dreamer of dreams, and he gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder comes to pass, Of which he spoke to you, saying, Let us go after other gods, which you have not known, and let us serve them.

You shall not listen to the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams." Notice that the devil and his emissaries also have the power to work miracles.

Miracles prove only 1 thing, supernatural power.

But such power can come from God or Satan.

In fact, Jesus specifically warns us about false prophets.

For there shall arise false Christs and false prophets and shall shew great signs and wonders in so much that if it were possible they shall deceive the very elect God warns us of false Christs and false prophets who will be so extremely convincing that they will deceive everyone except the very elect of God.

So how can I tell if a prophet is true or false?

Test their teachings and conduct by the word of God.

Isaiah chapter 8, verse 20, to the law and to the testimony, If they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them." Just remember, if they teach and behave contrary to Scripture, they are false prophets and there is no light in them.

Well, what does the Bible say about false prophets?

Deuteronomy chapter 18, verses 10 through 12.

There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or 1 who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or 1 who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or 1 who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritualist, or 1 who calls up the dead.

For All who do these things are an abomination to the Lord, and because of these abominations, the Lord your God drives them out from before you.

But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death." Scripture speaks against the following types of false prophets.

A sorcerer or 1 who claims to contact spirits of the dead.
