01 Expectant Hope

Coming to you from Silver Spring, Maryland, welcome to Inverse, a Bible-based conversation on life principles, contemporary issues, and thought-provoking perspectives.

Now here's your host, Justin Kim, with Inverse.

Hey everyone, my name's Justin and this is Inverse, And we're in the studio talking about a very precious topic to all of us.

So before we get started, I want to acknowledge my friends here.

And on my left and your right, you have Jonathan.

We still love our brother Sebastian and sister Callie will say, hey guys out there.

And They have moved on to bigger and better things that the Lord is leading them in.

And we are just this week, it will be the 4 of us this quarter.

The remnant, the remnant, the 4 of us, the remnant.

We are not talking about the remnant, but something similar to the remnant is the heritage of the Adventist faith.

We're going to delve into our identity, our mission, our message, kind of like why, why who we are and why and how and all those questions.

So we're gonna look at a lot of passages of scripture, but also going to look at some passages that are not in scripture, that it makes sense.

Some other passages in Adventist history is what I wanted to say.

And you can follow along if you go to inversebible.org.

And this is the quarter on Adventist heritage, Adventist heritage.

So let's start with our word of prayer and Siku can you pray for us?

Loving Father we're thankful that we have the opportunity to come together to study your word once more.

We thank you for the presence of the Holy Spirit, who is our teacher and our guide.

And we pray that now hearts would be receptive to receive your spirit to understand the things that you would have for us to learn, that the conversation and the study that we have now would be beneficial for our own soul salvation and for those who are gonna hear it in Jesus name we pray amen Also curious We got some new a new audio set up I should say so curious what you guys think let us know on social media if you can hear us better It doesn't change the dynamic of our conversation a bit, doesn't it?

You guys are like in my head, like literally in my head.

Jonathan, let's start us off here with our first lesson.

Our church started, we're talking about the Adventist faith, the Adventist denomination, Seventh-day Adventism.

And give us a short primer on how it got started, and why are we talking about these old things?

You know, I think what we have to clarify is that there is no—this idea of all these denominations, you know, that's some organizational structures that have been put in place by humans, but from God's perspective, there's only faithful people and not faithful people.

And so all throughout Scripture, you have those who are faithful.

Often it's a remnant within a group of called people, But God has always been faithful to them and has covenant with anyone who believes in him and in his word.

And throughout history, you have seen that continue even after Christ went to heaven.

In the 1800s, there was a great movement surrounding an understanding of the prophecies of the book of Daniel and Revelation.

And people were coming back to Bible truth.

And 1 of the understandings of the book of Daniel and Revelation came through the preaching of William Miller.

He was just a man who, through an experience he had during the, I think, the Revolutionary War where he felt like, you know— Yeah, the—okay, yeah, yeah, yeah, Revolutionary War.

Right, it was the Revolutionary—yeah, yeah, yeah.

He felt like, whoa, God cares about us, where he before did not really have that understanding of God.

And so he said, I need to understand God better.

And when he came to the book of Daniel and the prophecies in there, Daniel 8 and others as well, he realized that the second coming of Jesus is very soon.

In fact, he believed that the second coming of Jesus was going to happen in the year 1843.

This kick-started a whole movement around the world.

It's called the second great awakening in history.

The first 1 happened, I forget, in the 1700s in North America generally.

And it was, I forget who the big preacher was.

He would say Mesopotamia and people would cry that it was so eloquent.

Anyway, so he was a big guy and everyone knew who he was and we don't, but then the second great awakening is in the 1800s.

And it was started from this humble guy, Miller.

And he didn't wanna share this, but he felt like the Lord really impressed him.

And people started converting, starting to become serious with the Lord because they thought he's coming.

And so out of that, a lot of people kind of like dismissed all of this and like, oh, we were fooled.

But there were some who were like, this made too much sense.

We must have misunderstood something in the prophecies.

And out of that movement eventually grew the people who would later organize themselves as Seventh-day Adventists.

But there was a lot of other things that played into that.

So Seventh-day Adventists are not Millerites in the sense that they were, you know, there were no Seventh-day Adventists in those days, But they were Adventists, people who believed in the soon second coming of Jesus, and out of that movement grew, you know, later on the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Yeah, so this is either—I find the reaction to history is 1 of either 2 ways.

1 is like, wow, that's so amazing, Hey, I gotta go look it up.

Not the greatest form of accuracy, but it's just briefly all there.

And I'm like, oh, you want to delve into it?

Or the other reaction is like, man, what is, man, you know, help us, help us with that.

And we're entering a generation where even 1900s, you know, my son was like, dad, were you born in the 1900s?

And I'm like, yeah, which was not that long ago.

And he's like, wow, like, did they have like computers back then?

So we're kind of, we're not just 1 gen removed.

First thing for me, I'm married to someone of Filipino origin.

Well, his parents are Filipino, and he was born in the United States, but he comes from a Filipino background, and I'm from Zimbabwe originally.

02 The Sanctuary Message

My name is Justin Kim and we're so happy that you decided to join us, whether it be by podcast or by video cast or social media or YouTube or whatever, satellite or smoke signals that we're sending out to you.

In the studio we have Israel, Siku and Jonathan.

We are looking at the topic of Adventist heritage.

If you don't know what Adventist is, you want to stick around with us, we'll tell you everything there is to know about the Adventist denomination, what we believe, what we eat, what we do, because we believe it is a biblical denomination and you may think what in the world?

And if you haven't been with us last week you can go to inversebible.org.

You can look at the Bible study guides there on the topic of Adventist heritage.

And we are currently in episode 2, lesson 2, but you can backtrack to lesson 1 where we talked about the—what did we talk about last week, Jonathan?

We talked about the Great Disappointment.

Yes, which is a misunderstood prophecy of the book of Daniel, out of which later on, people out of that movement later on started to descend into the church.

We talked about how we can be ready for the second coming of Jesus.

We looked at Matthew 25 and how the parable of the virgins impacts us today.

And the point that it makes is you need a relationship with Jesus today.

You need the Holy Spirit today to be ready when he comes because there is an apparent delay.

Yeah very good you don't have to look at the lesson.

Jonathan just taught the lesson right there.

Well let's have a word of prayer and then we're gonna go to Hebrews 9 today that addresses a certain...

I love how Adventistry there's a problem they go back to Scripture and then the scripture finds the answer and addresses the problem and they move on.

And then there's a new problem, and then they go, and it's just kind of this, so it's a cool construction that's going on.

Our Father in heaven, we're thankful for your leading and your guiding in our past history, which gives us the assurance that you will lead us not just today, but also throughout our whole lives.

As we study your word today, we ask for the blessing of your presence to lead us and to guide us in Jesus' name, amen.

Siku, the Adventists, you know, I'm thinking of a couple things.

Before we actually start with this episode, there are some disclaimers that we want to mention.

Jonathan and I were talking before this episode was starting, and if you watched the last episode, we did make a couple of mistakes.

And so we are here at Inverse, we are humble enough to own up to our mistakes.

The first 1, Jonathan, what was the mistake that you made?

The mistake I made, disclaimer to that, I'm European, so I have an excuse.

I mentioned that William Miller fought in the Revolutionary War, And he may have, but I don't know that.

But the point I said that he fought in the Revolutionary War, what I meant was the War of 1812.

That's where he had that experience where he realized God does care about his life.

My mistake that I am just as equally guilty of is I didn't know the name of the preacher who was known for his eloquence.

Some pronounce it Whitefield, but he was known for his eloquence.

And before the time of microphones and headphones, I was gonna say microphones over here, that he would be able to speak to like 20, 000, 30, 000 people in an auditorium.

And he would just use just his natural diaphragm.

And the saying is he would say the word Mesopotamia, and people would cry because it was so eloquent.

I wish I could, you know, people cry for different reasons when I speak.

We'll try to say it now, see what happens.

All right, so let's go into our topic here.

We are talking about the early Adventist, Advent believers in Siku.

What was 1 part of the, so we talked about the disappointment, and then there was a problem, and what was the answer to that problem?

Okay so the problem was that they expected that Jesus would come on October 22, 1844.

They said other dates but they eventually were there that date.

And so because they had invested so much and they really believed with all their hearts that the world was going to end because Jesus was coming, they were super disappointed.

They what they had misinterpreted was a prophecy in Daniel chapter 8, where he talks about at the end of this long time prophecy of 2300 days, years, that the sanctuary then would be cleansed.

And they naturally assumed that the sanctuary meant the world, which was a dominant understanding of what it meant by sanctuary in that day.

And so in biographies of people who experience this, they talk about just weeping and weeping and crying on the day after Jesus didn't come, October 23, they were just, They cried all night and into the morning.

And then you have this guy named Hiram Edson in his barn at his house.

He had some people had gathered over there and they were just I mean just in shock, you know, at what had transpired.

And coming out of that, you know, in the morning, he decided to go for a walk and walk across his field to go visit some other Advent believers to encourage each other.

And he was walking along the field with his friend, Owen Crossier.

And as they're walking, like he just- And you know these names that's just coming out of your- Good, good, good, good, good.

But I mean, the story is like pretty crazy, right?

And he's like, God is showing me the answer to what transpired and what he describes later is that he just he saw this this kind of vision I guess to so to speak of a sanctuary in heaven.

So we don't know exactly what is he experienced, whether it's a vision, imagination, or whatnot, but the idea popped into his mind of this.

Corroborated by scripture, we'll get into that, but sorry, just wanted to...

So, I mean, story-wise, so he has this experience, this epiphany, I don't know, right?

And so they rush back to the barn, and they delve into the Bible.

We need to look again at what does it mean, the sanctuary?

And that became the key to understanding what they had gotten wrong when there was understanding the prophecies.

Wasn't the timeline that was wrong, they had landed on the right dates ultimately, but they had misunderstood that key phrase.

And the most beautiful part about this to me was that they went back to the Bible you know like in that moment of disappointment you know God gave them enough light for them to go back to Scripture and delve into it and that's exactly what they did.

You know, the lesson for me that I take away and I love this because it's so it happens to me even today not just on 1844, 1844, is that there are 3 groups emerged.

1, they're disappointed so they're just like man this was all you know you know junk you know so I reject it all forget it.

Option 2 was they spiritualized it and they said like, you know what?

Oh, Jesus came, but he came into my heart.

And so, and then this was a good experience.

03 The Prophetic Gift

In Adventist Heritage we're touching on the sanctuary, on Revelation 14, on the state of the dead, Sabbath, stewardship.

We always come back to stewardship for some reason.

And so you can look at some of these things and cross-reference and get into a deeper study there.

We are looking at the topic of the Sabbath.

So Jonathan, if you can pray for us, we'll jump into our Bible text for today.

Father, we thank you so much for this opportunity we have to dive into your Word again.

We pray that your Spirit will illuminate our minds, guide us, help us understand maybe some new truths and something new that we haven't seen before, a different angle.

And I pray this not only for us but for everyone watching and listening and studying with us, we thank you in Jesus name.

So our denominational name is Seventh-day Adventist.

Seventh-day points to Sabbath, where God created in the beginning, and then Adventist points to Jesus' second advent and towards the ends, and the beginning and the end, and then we're squished in the middle there.

We've talked about, what did we talk about last week?

In a certain sense, isn't Sabbath just kind of random?

And by the way, we got to go to church on Saturday.

Like, it seems a little bit disconnected.

I mean, firstly it's important because God told us to keep Sabbath and he instituted the Sabbath.

But in the context of our history as Seventh-day Adventists, which is I think where you were just with it, so far we've come to the place where, you know, they had this disappointment and they Discovered that the key was their understanding of what the sanctuary was.

They thought it was the earth but when In Daniel 8 14 talked about the sanctuary being cleansed It was talking about a sanctuary in heaven and as they started studying the sanctuary They discovered all these truths about the sanctuary what would its services and what was happening and they discovered You know like in the organization of the sanctuary that there was the Most Holy Place, which served as, you know, God's throne room.

And in the Most Holy Place, in the earthly sanctuary, you had the Ark of the Covenant, and then you had the law of God inside the Ark of the Covenant.

And in the law of God, part of the law of God is the seventh-day Sabbath, is keeping the Sabbath, which is a crucial part of the 10 Commandments because The first part of the commandments kind of talks about our fidelity to God and the second part talks about our relationship with fellow humanity But in the fourth commandment the Sabbath commandment you have kind of like the merging of these elements It brings together our relationship with God our relationship with humanity of faithfulness to God results in a certain relationship we have with humanity.

It's kind of like this kind of crux, you know, in the commandments.

So in the development of our identity as Seventh-day Adventists was this realization in discovering the Sabbath truth was that if we neglect, if we reject this truth, it has implications for whether we are accepting God's law altogether, right?

And if we reject God's law, then what does that say about the truth about the sanctuary, about the most holy place and the sanctuary that it's in?

I mean, it's, cause all of the truth is interconnected.

And so it's not a random, you know, bloop out of the blue, you know, like let's just keep Sabbath, but It's woven together into the fabric of our...

I think that connection is really a powerful thing.

We often do study them as isolates and like, all right, lesson 1, this, lesson 2, this.

But seeing the Adventist, the history of the development, it's all interconnected.

And there's a certain beauty of the idea.

If you're into, I mean, Sikhu and I are abstract thinkers.

I think what's, while you were talking, I was thinking of is also in Adventism, like I love the fact that there is I don't know what I want to say.

So I think what Sigel was saying was just the beginning of what brought together, you know, You have splintered groups of people all over the place.

All of a sudden people start discovering the Sabbath.

It's not like the Seventh-day Adventist Church was the first to understand the Seventh-day Sabbath.

Eventually, the writing, the printed page gets to Joseph Bates, who reads this, who kind of then becomes a forerunner in the Adventist Church for teaching the Seventh-day Sabbath.

But I think that's the beginning of the history.

I think then as you were saying earlier, Siku, when this discovery was kind of made for the first time, you can't help but see it throughout all of scripture you know you see it in the beginning with creation you see it as God's covenant in the Old Testament with his people it's a sign that they are his chosen people then you see the major role that it plays in Earth's history at the end of time as a testing truth for whether or not we believe in God as our Creator, as our Sustainer, as our Redeemer, and so forth.

And so it became central to the Church because of its connectedness, a connection between God and His people throughout all of Scripture and throughout eternity past and eternity future.

And so it becomes central to the Seventh-day Adventist church.

You know, kind of backtracking to what you guys were saying earlier, what I appreciate about the development of our fundamental beliefs as Seventh-day Adventists, which of the Sabbaths, of course, is 1 of the big ones—they're all important—but what I like about it is the fact that these individuals, these young people, they came out of the great disappointment.

As they continued studying the Bible, God led them into a deeper Bible study.

And as they were studying, He taught them surrender to the Word.

He's taught them, hey, this is truth that has been forgotten or misunderstood or misplaced.

And he restored truth 1 thing after another.

We're gonna talk about other things in the next couple of weeks, but the Sabbath was 1 of those things that was restored in its true beauty.

And that is something that's really powerful and is directly connected to really this being an end time movement, a prophetically established movement by God.
