Holy, Don’t Touch

As a young child, my twin brother and I, I mean, we, mom and dad started leaving us home on our own when we were 8.

And so we were pretty young, but I guess we weren't that young.

And, but I should have known better because mom had gone to Kmart, I think it was.

Anyway, it was a long time ago, you understand.

She'd gone somewhere and my brother and I were left at home and as I recall, we didn't have air conditioning in the house growing up for a long time and then when it did come it was just in 1 room in a window.

And so we had these big box fans, you know what I'm talking about.

And so we had a blue 1 and it was in my brother, myself, our room.

And I don't know where Jamie was but I remember putting that fan up next to the dresser and I turned it on high or whatever because I was hot and I don't know if I was looking at it or whatever but all of a sudden the thing quit working.

And another episode happened in my room as well.

I was drying my hair 1 night with a hair dryer.

We had more hair back then, I needed a hair dryer in those days, And it was 1 of these little ones, you know what I'm talking about?

The real little ones that are really cheap and so forth.

And so, it was this little 1 and I was drying my hair.

And I remember I had a piece of paper on the wall of a coloring that I'd done.

And somehow that hairdryer knocked the paper off and it flew down and it hit the back of the hair dryer where the suction was.

And I was probably old enough then too, but anyway nonetheless I looked at that and I thought well that's pretty cool.

Fan, stuck it right up against the dresser.

Had no air with which to pull and it burned the motor up.

Hair dryer, paper, blocked the air flow, burned it up.

I think there's a lesson there, besides the obvious, don't put a fan next to the thing and don't do that with your hairdryer.

That is that sometimes, like that fan blade, we try to spin our wheels, don't we?

And yet we don't allow enough space for God to do his work in our life.

If that goes too long, we start to stink too, don't we?

Today, we are focusing on religious liberty and the importance of allowing space for each 1 to make their individual walk and choice with Jesus, amen?

And that if we try too hard, we will stifle the heart in its walk with Jesus and We will do to others what I did to that fan.

Title of the message this morning is, Holy, Don't Touch.

Lord, please speak to our hearts through the Holy Spirit.

I'm not worthy, I'm not, I cannot do anything, I cannot speak anything great of my own.

So Lord, I pray that you wash me and that you simply use me as a vessel by which you speak to your people.

We all have come here to sit at your feet and we all want to hear a word of life from you.

Would you please create that safe space around each 1 that the Holy Spirit might speak into their hearts that like we heard in the testimony of the baptism this morning that it's only when we surrender to you that we find true freedom.

Help us Lord as we Consider these things in Jesus' name, amen.

Take your Bible if you would and open to 2 Samuel chapter 6 and let's look at verse, We'll be looking at verse 1.

It was said, it's been said that persecution doesn't arise.

Now hear this carefully, persecution doesn't arise from bad people trying to make other people good.

Persecution doesn't arise from bad people trying to make other people bad.

It, persecution that is, arises from good people trying to make other people good.

Let me repeat, persecution doesn't arise necessarily from bad people trying to make other people bad.

It arises from good people trying to make other people good.

Again David gathered all the choice men of Israel, 30, 000, and David arose and went with all the people who were with him from Baal Judah to bring up from there the ark of God, whose name is called by the name the Lord of hosts, who dwells between the cherubim.

So they set the ark of God on a new cart and brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill, and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drove the new cart.

And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill, accompanying the ark of God.

That word Ahio can actually be also translated his brothers.

So it may be that this is talking about Uzzah's brothers, we're not exactly sure.

Then David and all the house of Israel played music before the Lord on all kinds of instruments.

So firwood, on harps, on stringed instruments, on tambourines, and cistrums, and on cymbals.

And when they came to Nacan's threshing floor, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled.

Then the anger of the Lord was aroused against Uzzah, and God struck him there for his error.

And David became angry because of the Lord's outbreak against Uzzah.

And he called the name of the place Perez Uzzah to this day.

Having decided on the location of the capital, David decides it's time to bring back the Ark of the Covenant.

Jerusalem has been conquered by Joab and his men And now David needs to bring the ark from Kiriath-Jerim to his new home.

Abinadab has held the ark at his place since it had been delivered back into the hands of Israel by the Philistines.

And now it was time to take the ark to its permanent location, some 9 miles, some 9 miles distant.

David wanted to make this an impressive scene, so before he proceeded, he gathered a Council of leadership together to discuss the move and upon agreeing on the matter they gathered some 30, 000 men 30, 000 Here it could be argued was David's first mistake For a while it's important to have input from others, right?

When it comes to the will of God it really doesn't matter what the committee thinks.

Truth and righteousness must always be put first.

The ark had been delivered by the Philistines via oxen and cart.

You remember how they suffered under the curse of God when they had stolen the ark and thus when they when they had stolen the ark they returned it by letting the animals take it home on their own.

Of course God ignored their ignorance of moving it upon a cart even though his directive to man was that the sons of Kohath were to carry it on the shoulders via long poles.

I'm talking about the Philistines, you know.

Y'all don't understand all that, so that's okay.

But it's supposed to be carried via long poles.

So, here we find David directing that a new cart be used, a new cart.

By the fact that it says a new cart, almost implies a relationship to the previous transportation.

So, David's directing now a new cart, since evidently that's the way you move the ark these days.

Was this the result of the counsel that he had been given, or was David just forgetting?

As they proceed, they come to Nachan's threshing floor, and 1 of the oxen stumble a bit, causing the ark to slide a bit.

Now Ahio, which again could be translated as possibly his brothers, was in the front of the ark and Uzzah on the side perhaps or towards the back.
