So my question for you this morning is, do you like to wait?

When I was a student missionary, if you sent something priority, now if you didn't send it priority, it may never get there, but if you sent it priority, you could send a package, And Pohnpei is way out there in the middle of Pacific.

It's a really long plane ride to get there.

I think it says there on the screen, 1 day and 9 hours.

And so for a package to get there, it takes about 29, 30, 35 days.

And if it takes an extra 15 or 20, well, you know, that's just how it goes.

And maybe it won't get there for 6 months.

And you put in the package something accordingly because if it's something you want to get there in a hurry, well, it's just not gonna get there.

Now, for most things that you used to order, it would say you had to wait 7 to 8, sorry, 7 to 10 business days, right?

And if you wanted it faster than that, you had to upgrade.

And if you were going to upgrade, you were going to pay considerably more.

And I don't know about you, but that's something else I don't like, because I don't like to pay for shipping.

And so you're left waiting for 7 to 10 days.

Laundry, wash 1 hour, dry 1 hour, fold 7 to 10 business days.

Does that hold true in your house by any chance?

But then Amazon came along and came up with this idea of two-day delivery.

I remember for a long time, my mother-in-law, let's just order from Amazon, it'll be here in 2 days.

But somehow that's not vast enough either.

Now we have 1 day delivery, even same day delivery.

You've probably seen those little videos threatening for drones to bring not only the package that you've asked for, but for a hot coffee, they say, is coming in the future that will just drop down and the drone stays way up in the sky so you don't hear it, and sends us a line down, and there's your little package.

Now I don't drink coffee, so that's not a thing for me, but same day delivery, that's kinda cool and slash kinda creepy.

You push the button and then you go to the front door and then there's this thing in just a few hours.

You need that ingredient for whatever you're cooking.

And we are addicted, if you will, to fast.

The fast food industry was built around this very premise.

We have on-demand books, on-demand music, on-demand entertainment.

It's here, we want it now, just a few clicks away.

I don't know about you, but I will not get on I-26 before I check My trusty the lap But I have to tell you my app let me down this week.

We were on our way, we were gonna be there.

Our ETA, we were golden, we were gonna be on time.

And then right around Biltmore Park, everything just slows way down.

I still don't know what was going on except there were 2 construction trucks there blocking both lanes with big signs saying do not pass.

And they were blinking and going about 2 miles an hour.

Well, if you can't get here by 2.15, we're gonna have to reschedule.

Thankfully, for whatever reason, they got the go-ahead, and these trucks started to move just in time, and We got there at 2.13, didn't we, Mary Ann?

There's something about waiting that's hard to do.

And perhaps, I imagine all of us here at some point in time have rerouted, even though it may be further and maybe even take longer but the idea of sitting and waiting is so much harder than actually moving.

At least we're going somewhere, at least we're doing something, at least we're on the way.

But to wait And the hardest part about waiting is when you don't know how long the wait will be.

In fact, my students in Pohnpei, and they're broken English, they would just say, I hate wait.

We're continuing our series on David, a man after God's own heart, and that's the title of our sermon today, I hate to wait.

That's a little bit what it feels like to me, to wait.

And so this morning we're gonna look at another chapter in David's life where he had to hurry up and wait.

And so a little review in 1 Samuel chapter 21, remember David is on the run, he seems to have lost his connection with God.

His trust in God to provide for him is waning, and in desperation he lies to the priest.

A mistake that cost the murder of all of the priests but 1 that gets away.

It was the king whom they had chosen who had committed this outrage.

The ark was with them but the priests of whom they had inquired were slain with the sword.

So David lies to the priest, he lies essentially to his pastor, asks for a weapon, ends up hiding behind the sword of Goliath, ironically the very sword that did not deliver Goliath, yet this is where David is placing his trust.

You remember David's word, you come to me with a sword and a spear, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts whom you have defied.

But now in desperation, he clings to the sword of Goliath.

He goes to Gath to the enemy seeking refuge.

They recognize him and so he pretends he's a madman, drooling, saying all kinds of things in hopes to, and in fact he does, escape.

In chapter 22, David ends up in the cave of Adullam.

And last time we talked about how caves you need to know are where God does some of his best work.

Because in those dark experiences that it drives us to our knees, forces us to reevaluate, look to God in search for answers.

And it's there in the cave that his family comes to visit him and it describes how he's surrounded by this rag-tag group of rebels all described as either in distress, in debt, or discontented And it seems to be here that David sees his overwhelming need of God.

It seems to be here in this cave that David humbles himself.

I imagine God whispering to David, see what a mess you've made of things.

Remember how I delivered you from the lion and the bear and the giant.

And it's in this cave experience and we looked at this before, Psalm 34, 4.

He wrote this psalm while in the cave, I sought the Lord and he heard me and delivered me from all my fears.

Verse 6, this poor man cried out and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all his troubles.

Verse 7 and 8, the angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear him and delivers them.

Blessed is the man who puts his trust not in a sword, but in God, in Him.

And so David finally makes those connections again.

His relationship with God, I like to think, is restored again.
