All right, good afternoon everyone Welcome to our class this afternoon on the ultimate pest control formula how to beat bugs organically so Housekeeping just before we get started.

There is 1 thing that I forgot in an every single class and that is at the end I am supposed to remind you to please rate the class.

So I have forgotten it every single time.

Yeah, if you think of it, just remind me at the end.

You can rate any of the classes that you've attended and that is helpful to the Adagra staff as they're planning what classes to have for next year and yeah the whole programming committee etc.

Otherwise, quick little introduction to myself.

I know many of you have been part of the other classes that I've done, but my name is Paul Dysinger, and I worked for many years with my family on Bountiful Blessings Farm.

It's a small-scale, organic farm in Middle Tennessee.

My dad and uncle partnered for many years.

And then after working with the commercial side, I branched off and started teaching people how to grow their own food on a home-scale level, on a homestead level.

And that has morphed into now we actually are Developed garden and farm planning software seed time many of you are familiar with that as well So that's just a quick little background to myself now for a little reminder, I don't know if every if every presenter is doing this or not, but quick little reminder.

So that means everyone's staying on the right track.

During the first 5 minutes, that's your rule of 2 feet.

You can, if this class, you're like, this isn't what I came here for, jump up and leave.

I won't be offended if you want to go somewhere else.

But if you would like to learn more about pest control in your garden, how to beat the bugs organically, that's what we'll be talking about today.

All right, so why don't we have a quick word of prayer and then we'll jump straight into it.

Heavenly Father, thank you for this time that we can talk about our gardens and about pests and how we can manage pests in our garden.

I just pray that you'd send your Holy Spirit, give us wisdom and understanding as we talk about this together, to understand the nature that you created in Jesus' name.

How many of you have dealt with pest problems in your garden before?

I think almost everyone's hand went up, if not everyone.

So, we're going to be talking, and in this class, We're specifically going to hone in on pest problems and even more specifically on Insect and bug and worm problems We will I will save time for question answers so we can get into you know, what do I do with deer in my garden, what do I do with rabbits in my garden, stuff like that.

We can we can jump into some of those things as well, but the presentation itself is going to dive specifically into insect and bugs type pests in the garden.

We're gonna start out with our three-step NOW formula for insect pest control.

So 1 of the things we like to do is try and Try and make rhymes and try and make acronyms and stuff like this that you can hopefully remember, okay?

So this is our three-step now formula N-O-W and we'll go over that.

Number 2 is the number 1 defense against insect pest problems in the garden.

Because handling diseases, I don't think we're not gonna actually dive into diseases in this presentation.

So I'm sorry if that was what you were looking for.

We're specifically going to be sticking with the pests for this class.

So let's talk about the three-step proven now formula for organic bug control.

The now formula has 3 steps, 3 simple steps, and the first 1 is a little tongue-in-cheek, but it's nuke them.

Now, basically get rid of the pest, right?

We want to do it as naturally as possible, But there comes a point in our gardens where from time to time you may have a pest problem that is so severe that you've got to do something with the pests that are there, right?

And so we're gonna talk about ways that you can bring that pest pressure down.

Now the truth is a lot of people stop here and all they focus on is how and it becomes a battle with the pests, right?

It's you against the pests and all we're trying to do is kill pests, kill pests, kill pests, and that's kind of the direction that agriculture in itself has gone until the pesticides get stronger and stronger and stronger and stronger and worse and worse and worse and worse and suddenly it's bad for us, too.

We're killing the pests and we're killing ourselves at the same time.

So we want to do this naturally and we don't want to stop there because the pests are not really actually the problem in your garden.

And 1 of the best examples is that it relates to our bodies.

Well in a sense, but they're a symptom of a deeper problem, right?

The reason why we want to boost our immune system is because our bodies have been created by God to be able to fight back against bugs in our bodies, right?

And so the healthier our bodies are, the less susceptible we will be to disease.

The same happens between the plant world and the bug insect world.

Bugs, we've seen this first hand on our farm, bugs will attack the stressed plants in your garden.

We had a hoop house where we had to level off the ground to make the hoop house level to build it.

And what happens when you scrape your ground from 1 side to the other and you level it off if it's a hill?

You just pushed all your topsoil down to 1 side of that hoop house, right?

And for those of you who may not be familiar, the top layers of your soil is going to be the most rich, the best nutrient, you know, this is what you want to grow your plants in.

But when we leveled it off, we pushed it all down to 1 side and so now we've got some nice rich top soil down here.

Up here it's the subsoil, it's not that great and so we started building that soil.

But the first couple years, it was within the first, I don't know, 2123 years, I don't remember, we grew a bed of spinach in there and you could see the difference.

From the 1 side up with the with the subsoil, the spinach leaves were yellow, they were sickly, you know, not doing as well.

Smaller leaves, down where the topsoil was, much more beautiful, you know, nice spinach, the kind you want to eat.

Very interestingly, when you'd walk in, the spinach leaves that were yellow, sickly, smaller, riddled with bug holes.

And the big beautiful spinach leaves, hardly a bug on them, right?

The bugs will literally go after the stressed plants.

We have seen cabbage plants, 1234, second 1, completely decimated.

Like, cabbage worms have just completely eaten it up.

First 1, third 1, fourth 1, beautiful, fine.

Like why do they go after that 1 plant, right?

Now eventually sometimes sometimes they will spread and be on all your plants.

But I'm just giving you some examples of how they will target the stress plants.

And part of it is that the sugars and the starches in the plant of a healthy plant, the bugs cannot digest as well.

And so they're going after those plants that have been stressed and they can digest those better and it becomes a feast to them.

Whereas the healthy ones, the plants themselves basically have their own immune system against them.

So That was a little roundabout digression here, but this is building up the foundation of we don't want to stop with just killing the bugs.

You know, this is not a man versus bug fight in your garden.

We wanna recognize the bugs are there as a symptom of a deeper problem.

So the next thing is you want to organically fertilize your crop.

Just like you, when you get sick, how many of you load up on the vitamin C and vitamin D and you blend up your ginger and lemon and honey and cayenne pepper fire drinks that you drink.

So you want to do the same thing with your plants.
