The Ransom

Our Father in Heaven, we thank you so much for the Sabbath rest that is so much sweeter than rest we get any other time of the week because you are here with us.

Father, I thank you for your word that is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path.

And again, Father, tonight I don't want to be the 1 teaching.

But Father, I surrender myself to you again.

I ask, Father, that you would fill me with your Holy Spirit.

That as I stand up here speaking I would not be seen, Lord, but you would be seen.

And that this Sabbath evening the message would come straight from your throne room and presented to the minds here.

Now before we actually read this passage, I want to give a brief overview of the sanctuary service.

There's some points that we need to capture tonight.

We're going to be focusing specifically on the sacrifice that takes place in the courtyard of the sanctuary.

We're focusing specifically on the piece of furniture called the altar of sacrifice and the laver.

They were outside of the Holy and Most Holy Place in case you're not familiar with the sanctuary.

They were surrounded by a 7 foot high white curtain that went all the way around the sanctuary and we're looking specifically at what took place out there.

But I want to look at an overview of the sanctuary because this is going to be key for tomorrow night.

So this is basically what you need to understand tonight.

There is, you can divide the services of the sanctuary up into 2 categories or 2 phases.

You can divide it up into the daily service that took place every day of the year, but then there was also the yearly service that took place once a year.

So in the daily service of the sanctuary, the first phase we're looking at, what's basically going on that you need to remember tonight for tomorrow night, is sinners were bringing their offerings to the sanctuary, They were carrying their sins with them and they were bringing them to God.

They would bring their sins inside of the sanctuary and they would leave them with God and they would go home forgiven while the sin was going being placed sometimes on the horns that were on the altar of sacrifice, But sometimes it was taken inside of the sanctuary and it was placed on the horns of the altar of incense inside.

So what we need to know is that the sins are going in, in, in to the sanctuary.

Now once a year, the high priest will perform the yearly service or the Day of Atonement which is part of that and he would go all the way into the most holy apartment of the sanctuary and he would take blood with him and he would perform a cleansing service in the sanctuary And in this work he was removing the sins that had been brought into the sanctuary.

Now he's beginning in the most holy place and he's taking them back out, out, out.

And ultimately he puts them on the head of the scapegoat that removes them from the camp.

So what we're needing to understand tonight, The basic concept is the daily phase sins are going in in in and on the yearly phase sins are coming out out out.

All right this is that's what we need to understand tonight.

Now we're gonna look more into that tomorrow night But let's go to our passage now in Psalms 51.

We're answering the questions about sacrifice.

There's 3 questions I like to ask, then we're going to look at the verse.

What was the purpose of so many animal sacrifices, specifically the sin offerings?

What was the purpose of all these animals that were killed, millions of them ultimately through the years?

I mean, we're talking from all the way from Eden, all the way until even after Jesus died they were still sacrificing his hand.

Did it bring God pleasure to see this victim bleed and suffer and die?

The reason I ask that question is because that's really what goes on in all of the other religions that have sacrifices.

They're trying to appease their angry God.

So the third question is was God an angry tyrant?

And he needed to see bulls and goats and lambs killed and he needed to see their blood shed in order to be satisfied.

We need to answer these questions about sacrifice tonight so we're looking in Psalms 51 now to begin to answer these questions.

Let's turn to verse 17, or 16 I'm sorry, Psalms 51 verse 16.

David is writing here and he presents a very provocative statement.

He says, for thou desirest not sacrifice else I would give it.

All the way from the Garden of Eden, God had instructed them to take their animals and to sacrifice this animal and this animal was presented to them as teaching them the means of salvation.

But David says sacrifices and offerings thou desirest not, you don't delight in this.

There's an interesting Hebrew word for the word desire, Thou desirest not sacrifice.

The Hebrew word is kafet, which means to incline to, to bend, to be pleased by, to desire, to delight, to find favor in, to like, to be pleased, to have pleasure in.

So David, what he's saying is, Lord, you won't, he's basically saying, you won't incline to me merely because I'm offering an animal sacrifice.

You won't bend because you see this animal slaughtered.

He's saying, this isn't pleasing in your sight.

Now, as we go on and we read the second half of this verse, the word delightest is even more interesting as you look at the Hebrew origin.

The word delightest comes from the Hebrew word ratzah, which means to be pleased with specifically to satisfy a debt, to be accepted, to be pardoned, to reconcile self.

So David is bringing out a very interesting point here.

He says that the Lord isn't pleased by seeing these animal sacrifices.

He doesn't incline to me merely because I'm offering an animal.

He says, I'm not, I'm not, this isn't a payment for my debt.

I'm not being reconciled to God because of this payment that I'm offering, David presents a very interesting idea.

That the Lamb wasn't simply a payment, so I could go out and do whatever I wanted, and then just bring an offering to the sanctuary and it would be all fine.

Now God, it would be very, it would be very bad, it would destroy the picture God was trying to give them inside of the sanctuary if the Israelites would ever conceive that idea, that I can just go out and do whatever I want to do and then I'll just bring an offering to the sanctuary and it'll make it all good.

So I can continue on and what I like to do out here and then I can just bring my offering over here to the sanctuary and I can go back out here and do this.

David is saying no, God is not pleased by animals being killed again and again and again.

He's saying God is not, this isn't a payment for sin.

This isn't something that's appeasing an angry God so you can go out and do it again.

This is, David is presenting a very provocative idea.

It would be disastrous for the sanctuary if the Israelites would ever get that idea in their minds.

But yet there's a story in the Bible where this exact thing happened to King Saul.

And the story is found in 1 Samuel chapter 15.

You can go there if you like, you don't need to.

I'll be mostly telling you the story and I'll read 1 verse from it.

But basically what has happened in this story in 1st Samuel 15 is Saul has been instructed by Samuel.

The Lord told Samuel to tell Saul, go with your armies over to the Amalekites and I want you to utterly wipe them out.

Kill their king, kill their men, kill their women, kill their children, kill their cattle, their sheep, their oxen.

He says because I've remembered how when you came out of Egypt they tried to do that exact same thing to you.

They laid weight in the way and they tried to do this to you and God says I remember this and I want you to go do this.

So Saul takes his army and he goes over to where the Amalekites are and he utterly wipes them out, women, children, but he saves the king and he saves the best of the oxen, the best of the cattle, the best of the lambs and he brings those back with him.

Now you get the idea in this story that he's kind of trying to slip by Samuel because Samuel's at 1 place and Saul kind of slips by him and goes over to another place, but the Lord comes to Samuel and says, Saul has disobeyed my vote.

I repent that I even put him in the king because he's not obeying my commandments.

As he hears what's going on with Saul, he goes to Saul and meets him where he's at.

And as he comes up, Saul has the audacity to come out to him, and this is what Saul says.

I have performed the commandment of the Lord.

And Samuel basically says, no you haven't.

What is this sheep I hear bleeding, these cows I hear lowing.

And Samuel says, no you haven't obeyed the Lord.

So he says, well I obeyed the commandment of the Lord, but the people, they saved the best of the animals and they brought them with them.

They're more than I am, they brought them with them.

And isn't this what we often do as humans?
