The Golden Calf, Midianitish Women, and Counterfeit Revival

Alright, so as I said this seminar is centering around the Golden Calf, Midianitish women and the counterfeit revival.

And what we want to do this afternoon is take time to look into the word to see situations that took place in the past that may help us in the present we had we have a text that helps us tremendously in this area and I'm just going to ask if you have any volunteers to help us with it If you would be so kind read Ecclesiastes chapter 1 verse 9 for me please.

If somebody will get that Ecclesiastes chapter 1 and verse 9.

Okay when you have it just stand on up and read it.

9, the thing that hath been it is that hath which shall be and that which is done is that which shall be done and there is no new thing under the sun.

Okay so history is a great teacher isn't it?

It always reminds us of what happened in the past and what was the outcome and then you hope not to repeat that in the present if you have learned the lessons from from what happened in the past.

Essentially now what we're going to do is just look at 3 case studies, not 2 case studies but 1 that is really us.

I think we're the last case study, okay, but in the past we had a situation that took place at the base of Mount Sinai, and we get a bit of an understanding of this when you read a little bit further, earlier in the experience of the children of Israel, if you even go back to when Moses first came into the back to Egypt for the purpose of the emancipation of the children of Israel, what you had, what you had was some convincing that needed to be done on the part of Moses that they needed to come out of Egypt.

Never forget these little tidbits, these little facts because even though they were undergoing slavery there were some who had adopted the customs and the practices of Egypt and they rather liked what they had and what they saw.

So unfortunately they had to be convinced.

If you would look at it from the movie standpoint, Cecil B.

DeMille, he probably would have it as Moses going straight to Pharaoh and talking about let my people go and that was it.

But we have the spirit of prophecy that goes more in depth than any Hollywood movie right.

What I want us to do now is turn to the book of Exodus chapter 32 and I'm going to ask somebody to read the first 8 verses.

Exodus chapter 32 let's look at the first 8 verses okay we're going to try to do this 1 in another 12 minutes we'll be finished and then we're going to try to move on and get through all 3 of them because they're very very important that we see this okay if somebody would read that for us, Exodus 32 verses 1 through 8.

Let's have somebody read 3 verses, another 1 read 3, the last 1 read 2 I guess it would be.

And when the people saw that Moses was laid to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron and said unto them, Up, make us gods which shall go before us.

For as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt.

And Aaron said unto them, break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.

And all the people break off the golden earrings, which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron.

And he received them in their hands and fashioned it with a graven tool.

And after he had made it, he golded it in multiple calf and said to them, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

And when Aaron saw, he built an altar before him, and Aaron made a proclamation and said, Tomorrow is a feast to the Lord.

And he rose up early on the morrow and offered burnt offerings and brought peace, Okay I'm going to take verse 7 and 8.

I'm going to skim some of the highlights of this particular story, but it's very important that you understand this story and the relationship between that and the time that we're living now.

The people were very anxious because they had not seen Moses for some time.

In fact, he had been in the mountain some 6 and a half weeks.

Of course he was there for a time with Joshua and then the Lord invited him to come on up and then he was to receive the written copy of the 10 Commandments along with some the other guidelines that he was going to give the children of Israel.

So while that was taking place there was a restlessness at the base of the base of Mount Sinai.

They were very restless and the problem was is that Ellen White says that they were used to some kind of deistic representation.

They needed a head, a figurehead in front of them, and they did not have this now, and so now they there is a suggestion that is made to go over to Aaron and tell him to make them gods which will go before them for as for this Moses that brought us up out of the land of Egypt we what not what is become of him.

Let me tell you what the grave concern is for this situation.

We're going to see in just a second that Ellen White said it was the mixed multitude and if you were to go back in your reading to find out who are the mixed multitude you will learn that they were a group of people a very large group of people that accompanied the children of Israel out of Egypt but they were not worshiping the Hebrews God in fact they were you might say that they were just along for the ride.

They were curious to see where this movement was going to go, but they were not into the Hebrews God.

So Ellen White would go on to say there were ever a thorn in the side of Israel.

Now they said, made the suggestion that they go over to Aaron's tent and say up get up make us gods we shall go before us for as for this Moses that brought us up out of the land of Egypt we what not is become of him.' They made that suggestion okay and that was followed up with this action.

6 and a half weeks before they have heard the audible rendition of the 10 Commandments.

I mean I would tell you this the children of Israel have been treated to the greatest display of power on the part of God in any short space of time.

I don't think anybody has seen that much in such a short time would you agree with me?

I mean they have seen after 400 years of oppression they have seen the Lord move mightily through his servant Moses and Aaron.

They have gone to demand that the people be let out of Egypt and of course Pharaoh did not want to do this and so he had to be grinded to a halt.

And 10 plagues later he said all right you get to, you can go.

Okay but then of course as they went out on their journeys heading in the direction of Canaan, what happens now?

They come into the Red Sea and Pharaoh and his army is charging yet again, coming after them.

And Moses calls on the name of the Lord for what to do, and he's told that take the rod of Aaron and stretch it out across the Red Sea.

I mean this is not something on a DVD right this was something that they saw themselves okay and then the Lord of course closed up the Red Sea and Pharaoh's army was drowned and then shortly thereafter what happens they go to the base of Mount Sinai and the presence of the Lord comes isn't that right and they hear the audible rendition of the 10 Commandments.

I don't know of anybody who's experienced such an awesome, the awesome power of the Lord in such a short space of time and yet there's disbelief that quickly.

Kind of reminds me of when we have revivals in our church and you know and you're thinking oh boy we're going to move forward now because we're all on fire.

But you know what Ellen White says that every, every revival seems to be accompanied by greater apostasy.

This is a really, really difficult thing to know and to hear, but it's true.

Now the people are hesitating now don't forget everyone that a moment of hesitation will be filled with suggestions.

If we're not sure of what we believe, there are those who will come in and try and institute different things that are not our experience.

If we're not standing firm, you will find that there are those who will make these suggestions, right?

And so what happened is that they went over to Aaron's tent and they said, oh, make us gods, which shall go before us, which essentially is a type of congregationalism right.

They're going over to Aaron who's left in charge, isn't that true?

And they says Aaron this is what we want you to do now.

We want this for ourselves and Aaron was concerned for his safety.

Elomite says he was concerned for his life and so he obliged the people And he gave them now what they wanted.

Now Aaron went and he told them to take off their earrings which are in their ears, ears of their wives, their sons, their daughters.

And he took all of this gold, and I guess melted it down, and got it all where he could put it together and make this golden calf.

And then these very strong words, hurtful words to God.

Remember now that God is watching even though God is in the mountain talking to Moses God is also watching because God is omni what?

So he sees what's going on and what does he say?

They said these be thy gods O Israel which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

They said, for as for this Moses that brought us up out of the land of Egypt.

Now Moses was the front man, but it wasn't Moses that brought them out of Egypt isn't that right?

The 1 that brought them out of Egypt was God isn't that true?

This is very very important what I'm going to say.

We know what's going to happen in this story.
