NAD Health Summit 2012 - General Session

And I said, can you imagine Anybody who would say no thank you, I'll only have half.

It is Friday evening and you are a little tired, I can see that.

We are glad that you are for this Health Ministries Convention.

We believe that, as we have been guided to believe, that the health message is the right arm of what God wants to accomplish on this planet.

And I want to give this little statement before I go too far this evening, and it goes like this.

I actually said it to the folks who I met with this morning, and that is, a number of years ago, I was entering the United States through a Canadian airport.

And the immigration officer, the US immigration officer, said to me, where are you going?

And I said, I am going to Chicago and I'm going to take a drive to Berrien Springs, Michigan and there I'm going to go to the board meeting of the Andrews University.

He said, you were in the United States last week.

I said, well, I flew to Los Angeles and then drove to Loma Linda to attend board meetings of Loma Linda University.

And he looked at me and his face kind of scrunched up.

And he then used an expletive, which we'll delete tonight.

But he said, what are you, a blankety blank board groupie?

My encouragement in telling that story is that so often we come to events like this that have been planned and programmed and tuned finely And we go home and say, man, we had a great time.

Let's make the determination that by God's grace, the things that we learn here, we will take home and implement in the name of Jesus for the blessing of the people in our world, right?

I do want to repeat what I heard Deborah Brill saying earlier.

We are very grateful to God at the North American Division that we were able to find Katja Reinhardt.

For the work that she has done throughout the past year, it has been quite amazing.

Especially, you know, when we first invited Katja to come to the North American Division, she said, I have to tell you something and you may choose to say you don't want me.

And that is I have been granted a fellowship, a sponsorship by the National Institutes of Health to do a PhD.

And I don't want to lose that opportunity.

So while she's doing all this stuff, she is also doing her PhD.

And she takes out the garbage, sweeps the floor, and does the dishes besides.

Would you bow your head with me as we pray?

Our Heavenly Father, we want to thank you so much for your goodness and your grace.

When it comes to a discussion of your plans for the human family, there isn't 1 person in this room, including myself, who is worthy to take your name on our lips.

But we come boldly to you tonight asking you to cover us as we speak and as we listen so that we can truly understand your will for us and tonight we would see Jesus.

The mission statement of the North American Division reads as follows.

To reach North America, Bermuda, and Guam Micronesia with the distinctive Seventh-day Adventist message of hope and wholeness.

Now that message, that brief statement is set in a much broader context.

But all that we do in the next 10 days must focus upon that mission.

You see, that statement that I read is rooted in the Word of God.

It is rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, The message He came to proclaim, the message that was heralded by the disciples and ever since.

And the message that we talk about when we talk about Revelation chapter 14 verses 6 through 12, right In the heart of that message is the idea, the principle that God entered into the human picture to provide hope and wholeness to the human family.

I walked into the store to buy a Siamese fighting fish.

Many years ago when I had time for hobbies, I built an aquarium and stocked it with fish.

But in the process of building it, stocking it, and maintaining it, I became a friend with the pet store owner.

We had many conversations, philosophical and otherwise.

But 1 day as I walked into his store, he looked at me and he posed this question.

He said, what business does a religion have involving itself in the health of the community?

Is this just another 1 of the hooks that you Christians use to con people into your beliefs?

And I responded by making this statement that offering physical health and happiness to people was as much a part of the work of God and the plan of God as the eternal benefits that Jesus offered to them.

That God came into the world for a very specific purpose in the person of Jesus Christ.

I concluded our non-fish dialogue that day with the thought that health, spirituality, and education were all 1 and the same in the mind of God.

Jesus came to heal, to preach, and to teach, and to provide hope and wholeness for all humanity.

And we dare not Enter into this conference with any other view.

It is 1 of the great issues that confront us as an organization in 2012, and that is that we have broken up into little silos, almost like we have an education church and an ecclesiastical church and a medical health church.

And the time has come for us to listen to the voice of God's Spirit and begin to move together to collaborate with such godly authority that the work of God will have efficiency like it has never had.

Jesus' heart was moved by human need as reflected in this passage from Matthew chapter 9 verses 35 and 36.

Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

He was moved by compassion for them Because they were weary and scattered like sheep having no shepherd.

Perhaps the statement that best synthesizes the whole idea I'm trying to introduce here tonight is 1 that I found and that you are well acquainted with from the book Ministry of Healing and it reads like this, the Savior mingled with men as 1 who desired their good.

He showed his sympathy for them, ministered to their needs, won their confidence, and then He made them come and follow Me." As we talk about health and pedagogy and theology, this must be our foundation.

If we talk about better diets or health practices or mental health, then let this be our modus operandi.

As we talk about the message of Revelation 14, verses 6 through 12, let it always be with the view in mind that the goodwill of God is reaching down to the human family in order to bless them with wholeness and health and hope and happiness.

That in the process of introducing men to follow him, Jesus always built trust in the minds of men.

Then he extended the invitation to follow him.

And I want to suggest tonight that that is our task as well.

To bring people into a relationship of trust with God.

He was 11 years old, this little lad I want to tell you about.

11 years of age and he sat alone in his room crying, attempting to sort out life and to understand this new turn of fate that saw him on the road again.

For him, Life hadn't been a piece of cake, hadn't been a positive experience.

2 times abandoned by his family and then finally given up for care in foster homes, rejected by 3 families as incorrigible, uncontrollable and hopeless, abused by parents and then by foster parents to such an extent that he has now become a twisted soul.

In only a few hours the social service officers would arrive at that home to remove him and then to attempt to place him in another home.

And what had he done to break that relationship?

Nothing wrong with being a cartographer, But he had drawn a map, a map of the entire house that he was living in.

On his map he had labeled hiding places for things that he possessed and the things that he intended to steal.

But there was no evidence that he had stolen anything yet, but everything that he owned.

I don't know what's happening, it sounds like there's shrapnel outside and if you're concerned, duck.

He had hidden everything that was important to him in a secret place.

He was a product, this young man, unable to trust anyone, not able to get beyond his repeated rejection by 1 family unit after the next.

What would form the basis of his ability to develop a trusting relationship when he had come to the conclusion that those who said they cared for him only cared as long as he did everything according to their plans.

This young lad was well aware of the fact that should he get in the way of those plans, should he walk across an imaginary line of their devising, then he would be out again.

And I want to tell you when I looked at him and when I thought of his situation, There was 1 word that came to my mind and it was this word, impossible.

There are many people who live in our society under the same societal circumstances.

There are many people, especially in our world, and let us not fool ourselves that we can remain aloof from human society, that somehow we can send somebody else out to do the job, to connect with people on a real level, and that they will somehow find their way to God's kingdom.

Many people, you know, we have multiple societies in the North American division.

We just have had Guam, Micronesia added to our division.

Our division now extends from Bermuda to within 700 miles of the Philippines.

And there are societies, very different and divergent societies, and God is calling you and me to reach those people and yet there are multiple thousands and perhaps millions of people who live in an attitude of being unable to trust.

This young man was a symbol of a whole generation who are finding it more and more difficult to find faith, faith in their fathers, faith in their mothers, faith in their superiors, and any faith whatsoever in religion.

NAD Health Summit 2012 - Worship Service

Thank you Laura and Williams for a beautiful rendition bringing us to a sweet hour of prayer near to the heart of God.

I also want to thank in a very special way those who have organized this incredibly important North American Division Health Summit.

In a very special way we want to thank Katya Reinhart and her health ministries team and also of course Dan Jackson and Deborah Brill for their strong administrative and spiritual encouragement.

We also, of course, want to appreciate the strong participation of the Inter-American Division, and Belkis Archbold and her team.

What a blessing it is to work together as a world family.

Also of course our General Conference Health Ministries team, Alan Handysides and his group of dedicated associates.

And it was a privilege to participate with Dr.

Handysides in Makati and Manila, and we are planning another evangelistic activity together in the near future, and it'll be a great opportunity.

We also, of course, are grateful for our institutions that help us and contribute to this setting here, including of course Loma Linda University and the School of Public Health, Dr.

Penny Cook, and others who are so supportive.

And of course we're right here in the territory of the Southern Union, And we're grateful for their hospitality, for the Southeastern Conference, its territory here, and the Florida Conference.

I want to thank them for participating in what can be, could be, will be 1 of the most exciting things that you will attend this week.

And that will be the evening meetings where Mark Finley is partnering with Loma Linda, well with Florida Hospital, and in a very special emphasis on combining the physical, mental, social, and spiritual approach to helping people to see Jesus.

To be honest with you, I hope that when I'm 100 years old, I will have long been in heaven alive with the Savior.

But you know, it's a catchy phrase, and I certainly hope that all of us will be present here tonight and throughout the week for each of you.

Again, I want to thank Laura for that lovely reminder that there is peace and rest for the weary ones of this world near to the heart of God in that sweet hour of prayer.

And if ever there was a time when the world needed to hear a vivid understanding and a vivid picture of God as the great comforter, as the master physician, as the reliever of stress and anxiety, it is now.

The world is confused and weary and worn.

An understanding of why to choose the full life, That's the theme for this summit and I'm so glad they've taken it from Deuteronomy chapter 30, verse 19.

It's desperately needed by millions around the world.

That's why God has called each of us to this summit here in Orlando for the North American Division to tell the world.

I wanna thank Katya and her dynamic team for the excellent work that they are doing.

We're grateful for the many local church health programs that reach out to their communities, including the participation in the nationally sponsored Let's Move campaign to get young people to return to a healthy way of life and the rest of us with them, initiated by the first lady of this country, Michelle Obama.

We're honored that today the Surgeon General of the United States will be with us in support of our humble efforts to help the communities we represent to become healthy in every way, physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually.

You see, it's not just enough to find a quiet place of rest for yourself, a place where you can get physical and spiritual blessings, what Laura sang about.

But God is calling us to move from that quiet place and to share it, to tell the world through the loving kindness and interaction that each of us can provide.

Now as Seventh-day Adventists, we believe in the whole person concept, in ministering to those around us in a comprehensive way.

In 3 John Verse 2, God was speaking through John his disciple and he indicated, Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health just as your soul prospers.

You see, long before the current promotion of the whole person concept, God, the creator of the human race, and everything good that is here in this beautiful world, was declaring that he wanted us to be healthy in every way.

God wants us to be revived and reformed through the Holy Spirit's power today.

He wants us to understand that we are a complex creature made in His image, by His hand, and through His breath on the literal sixth day of a literal seven-day creation week, which happened recently, not eons ago.

Let no 1 dissuade you from the marvelous literal creation story of Genesis chapter 1 and chapter 2, which brings to the forefront the mighty creative power of God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit, the 3 as 1, the Trinity, which has existed since eternity and will exist into eternity.

They all participated in making us in their image, in God's image.

Our magnificent creator wants us to be the best representatives of being in full health.

Our magnificent creator wants us to understand that physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually, he wants us to prosper in our relationship with him and our service to others in loving, caring ministry, following Christ's example.

Look at Matthew chapter 9 verses 35 to 38.

Pastor Jackson last night in his keynote address highlighted this very important practical approach.

You see, that verse tells us, then Jesus went about all the cities and villages teaching in their synagogues, this is Matthew chapter 9, preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.

Then he said to his disciples, the harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few.

Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest." Now examine the ministry of Jesus.

The ministry that is to be ours as health professionals, as pastors, as church workers, as community and social workers, as church members.

Jesus went into the cities and the villages.

If you are to fulfill the theme for this health summit of choosing full life and telling the world, you will need to tell this good news where the people are, in the cities and in the villages, and many of them are in the rural areas.

Now let me make a heartfelt appeal to each of you.

Regardless of what line of work you are in, in this audience and those listening to us through the internet, Regardless of what your profession is, please join the world church in the great work of reaching the people in the cities of this world.

Follow Christ's example and reach out to the world that now has over 50% of the world's population living in the large metropolitan areas.

Join God's church in mission to the cities.

The book, Medical Ministry, page 304, a book that I hope all of you are very familiar with, challenges us with these words.

There is no change in the messages that God has sent in the past.

The work in the cities is the essential work for this time.

When the cities are worked as God would have them, the result will be the setting and operation of a mighty movement such as we have not yet witnessed." that mighty movement is yet to come.

Let's earnestly study, pray, humble ourselves before God and seek his direction for us as a people, pleading with him for the outpouring of the latter reign of the Holy Spirit, so that we can see this mighty movement take place.

You see the world is wearing out and I believe with all my heart that we are soon to see Christ's literal second coming.

Let's follow Christ's example and go into the cities to reach the people where they are.

Where possible, we ought to do this with what I term an in and out concept for working the cities as outlined in the spirit of prophecy.

You see, the in part of it represents those things that we do in the cities involving the use of centers of influence, local churches, church members, teams of young people involved in a variety of outreach activities, Health outreach, medical missionary work, health clinics, health lectures, vegetarian restaurants, literature evangelism, small group outreach, door-to-door missionary work, community services and social work following Christ's methods, the use of Adventist community services and ADRA, integrated media evangelism, counseling centers, reading rooms, Adventist book centers, Bible studies by members, by young people and Bible workers, child evangelism, personal evangelism, and witnessing, and public evangelism, and many more methods that the Holy Spirit yet has to reveal to each of us.

We need pastors, health professionals, and church members working together as indicated in the spirit of prophecy as a blended ministry.

You see in manuscript 117, written in 1901 by Ellen White, we read, Every minister of the gospel should be prepared to do practical medical missionary work.

The medical missionary work is to be as closely united with the gospel ministry as the arm is united to the body.

The reluctance shown to promulgations or the proclamation of the principles of health reform is caused by an unwillingness to deny self.

In our large cities, and I'm continuing to quote, in our large cities, the medical missionary work must go hand in hand with the gospel ministry.

It will open doors for the entrance of truth.

You see God is calling for all of us here at this summit to reinvigorate the use of medical missionary work.

We can call it whatever we want, health ministries, community outreach.

Medical missionary work is kind of an old term.

God wants us to do this in the large cities of the world.

I plead with you to carry a burden for the large cities of this division and everywhere around this globe.

We need denominational organizations and supporting ministries working together in community outreach and soul winning in the large cities of the world 1 of the outreach projects that kind of cuts across all walks of life has to do with literature.

We had a publishing ministries director here on the platform a few minutes ago.

He's also the health director for the Florida Conference.

He was telling me it just works beautifully together.

Well, I'm going to tell you 1 of the exciting things that all of us can participate now in 2012 and 2013 is the great controversy project.

And that is to distribute this marvelous book of hope to neighbors and friends during the next 2 years, distribute them by the millions." You see, Ellen White herself indicated that she wished that book circulated more than any other book she had written.

At this point in time, as we begin this 2 years of distribution, the World Church has committed itself to distributing 175 million copies of that book in all of its different versions.

Now the out part of the in and out arrangement for working the cities involves outpost centers or small institutes in the countryside, just on the periphery of cities, where Christian city workers can live or at least be rejuvenated, where a simple health lifestyle center can exist, and also a place where we can train young people and others to do special work for the cities of the world.

We need everyone dedicated to a comprehensive and sustained evangelistic outreach that will replicate the urban work that was done in San Francisco in the latter part of the 19th century and the early part of the 20th century.

Ellen White referred to it as a beehive of activity.

Much of it had to do with health ministries.

Listen, she wrote in the Review and Herald in 1906, During the past few years, the beehive in San Francisco has been indeed a busy 1.

Many lines of Christian effort have been carried forward by our brethren and sisters there.

These included, here we go, medical missionary work, health ministries, included visiting the sick and destitute, finding homes for orphans and work for the unemployed, nursing the sick, teaching the truth from house to house, distributing literature, and conducting classes on healthful living and the care of the sick.

A school for the children has been conducted in the basement of the Laguna Street Meeting House.

For a time, a working men's home and medical mission were maintained.

On Market Street near the city hall, there were treatment rooms operated as a branch from the St.

NAD Health Summit Devotional - Monday

Paul, when he wrote to the Corinthians, he says, and we read it in 1 Corinthians 2, verse 2, For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

This morning I want to talk to you about Jesus Christ, the Alpha and the Omega.

I want to talk to you about the person of Jesus Christ.

I want to talk to you about the power of Jesus Christ.

I want to talk to you about the purpose of Jesus Christ.

And I want to talk about the process of His healing ministry.

Gracious Father in heaven, before I dare to even open my mouth to speak, I seek that life that is Christ Jesus to be amongst us, to invigorate, to give us strength, and to bless us this morning.

Despite the fact that we talk about abundant life, we talk about full life, there are many who live their lives in quiet desperation.

There are many who seek to find meaning in life and instead live a tortuous, tormented existence.

Sure they have that drive for self-preservation, But sometimes they use and utilize it in perverse and self-destructive ways.

I forgot that I had 1 already attached to my tie and here I'm using the 1 in my hand.

I'm going to lay this 1 down, perhaps, if those who are controlling the speaker can do that, and then I don't need it.

In my career as an obstetrician, I did have a career as a pediatrician.

In my career as an obstetrician, by best calculations, I think I have delivered in excess of 7, 000 babies.

But you see, I started rather young and I delivered lots of babies in Africa, in Europe, and here in North America.

Delivering a baby is a wonderful experience.

A child is born and the baby cries and the mother feels so wonderful and the father sometimes he's even weeping and he holds that baby and it's a wonderful, wonderful experience.

But that child, that gift of grace, is born into a world that is an ungracious world.

They are often born, as Philip Yancey says, into a world of ungrace.

Sometimes a child is born looking perfectly normal only to go blue as it begins to breathe and we realize there is a cardiac defect.

Sometimes as the baby is in the nursery we begin to see that there's a neurological problem.

I've illuminated baby's heads in a dark room with a bright light and seen the whole head glow like a light bulb when there's been a poor encephalic cyst and the brain is just Not there.

But perhaps 1 of the saddest, saddest situations is when a baby is born unwanted into this world of ungrace.

Gail was such a person, born to an unmarried mother, untouched by her mother's hands.

In fact, unseen by her mother, She was taken to the nursery and adopted out to 2 people who really loved her.
