12 Steps to Wholeness, Part 1

Father, we are just so grateful for the opportunity to serve, for the opportunity to be here at this summit, to listen to the expertise of so many who are engaged in different areas of ministry, to learn from them so that we can incorporate a very effective ministry wherever we are.

But most of all, we are so grateful to be able to listen to you, because you have been speaking through so many of the presenters, and you have provided us an atmosphere of worship, an atmosphere where we are connecting with you.

So at this time, as we begin this seminar, I ask you to please pour down your spirit upon each 1 here.

May your spirit be felt, may you open our minds and our hearts so that we can discern the importance of the message that we are about to hear.

And please help us to really incorporate the things we're learning into a ministry that's meaningful, that will bring hope and healing and life to those who are struggling, looking for an answer that may bring some hope for their hopeless being.

So thank you for giving us the opportunity to walk this journey, this journey to wholeness, and bless us as we together fellowship and learn from you.

Well, I was just telling you that I'm very excited that you chose to be in this particular seminar.

Well, the reason is, you know that there are many people in our churches and around our community who are suffering.

They're suffering from all kinds of habits that are harmful that bind them down to a life that's hopeless.

That comes in the form of many different practices.

And it could come in the practice of chemical addictions.

It can come in the form of many other habits that are addictive in a way, but that really break down the life forces, as we hear it in the Spirit of Prophecy.

And so this seminar here, it's 12 Steps to Wholeness, has been put together with the idea of really launching in a bigger scale a ministry that has been going on for already nearly 20 years.

You might have heard of Adventist Regeneration Ministries.

And now, a couple years ago, this ministry that have been serving in churches, a few churches across America, as a support group for people that are struggling with these kinds of habits and addictions, it's been termed now Adventist Recovery Ministries.

And it has been, just recently, last year, incorporated under North American Division Health Ministries.

And so we are now, after this has happened, we've provided some developmental resources, a new resource, which is the 1 that you will be listening or hearing about this weekend, that is meant to help you go back to your church and really use that in the support groups that you'll be able to hold in your faith community, in your churches, imagine everybody here is an Adventist, and that you can then help those who are struggling with this.

You're gonna be hearing more about what that is by the several presenters that we have here who have been doing this in different ways in different parts of the country.

But the idea is for this ministry to really provide you with resources, provide you with knowledge on how to deal with those who are struggling like that.

So you have a sense of their journey they're going through so you can walk beside them in that journey.

And so the 12 steps are, you're gonna hear more about it, I'm not gonna get into the details of it, but it's really a very powerful way to help people through this journey as they continue in their recovery.

And this is then the materials that bring down to us the concepts that were used out there in AA or other things like that, other groups, but then make it in a language and with the principles and concepts that we so embrace our Christian principles and biblical principles, particularly focusing in Christ as the answer.

And so I'm so thrilled to be able to see such a large group.

We had like nearly 30 people probably who are passionate and I see them walking in and about this.

And I know God is gonna bless in a beautiful way.

You're going to have wonderful discussions.

I know you're going to have to be able to share a lot of what you are dealing with.

I know some of you in the audience already are dealing with this in many different forms and you bring expertise as well.

We are all learning together and we have a few people I'd like to present to introduce to you who have been again engaged in this ministry of healing and wholeness in this form in different areas.

1 of them I would like to introduce is Betty Campbell.

Maybe you can stand up and come forward here.

So Betty has been for how many years, Betty?

2004, So it's nearly like 8 years engaged before with Adventist Recovery Ministries, Regeneration Ministries.

And now, you know, we have turned the name to Adventist Recovery Ministries coordinating this track along with Pastor Ray Nelson, who I don't see here, but they have been the coordinators for putting together what you will be hearing.

And we're so grateful and very thankful to have Betty as 1 of our coordinators for, what is the region name?

Then we also will have this morning, and today and tomorrow, Dr.

Maybe he can stand up so you can know who he is.

Ricardo White is a psychiatrist and director for the chemical dependence program at the behavioral and, You can tell me.

Yeah, Behavioral Medicine Center at Loma Linda University.

And he has a wealth of knowledge in terms of the clinical aspects.

And we'll be able to share some very important concepts that we need to know if we're to be successful in helping, walking beside people in this journey.

Let me see if I see, there's a couple of other people, I don't see Ray, where is David?

So there's a couple of other presenters that will be here, and I see David walking in and Ray walking in.

So just come straight forward, because I'm introducing all the presenters, and we want to know who you are.

So David Sadlachek, I don't know if I said it right, he will tell you.

He has joined, he's been dealing with people in this area as well for many years, but he's joined Adventist Recovery Ministries and our board and really now bringing more information.

He has a book written on this area for people, pastors and others who are struggling with this and trying to minister to others.

And he will be sharing some very important concepts.

He is at Andrews University, is the vice chair for the School of Social Work or is a professor at the School of Social Work there?

How many of you opened your registration and saw a newsletter in the back?

So David is our editor, and if you don't, I have a whole bunch of newsletters I'll bring here in case you even want to take some home to your group so you can give that to people in a church.

That newsletter, maybe we'll tell more about that, it's bi-monthly and this is the first issue.

So we're very grateful to have David as well and he'll be presenting to you.

And of course, as I mentioned earlier, Pastor Ray Nelson has also been the person who has been instrumental in making this ministry alive and thriving through the years.

He was the former director for Edmunds Regeneration Ministries and then Recovery Ministries went right before it transitioned into North American Division.

And He's so passionate, I'm sure he will be sharing with you more about that.

So Pastor Ray Nelson is the other presenter.

And then I think we have the 4 of you who will be really taking us in this journey.

And I know that God will bless tremendously.

I just wanted to ask how many of you are involved?

I want to just introduce Ray Scott as well.

She won't be presenting per se, but she's 1 of our coordinators in the Atlantic Union and that region.

And also Frank Sanchez, who is a coordinator in the South Southern Union and has been through many churches.

He is the coordinator as well in the area in New York and some other areas there.

And so this ministry is growing and we are in the process of restructuring it, working through health ministries and the different conferences and unions.

You can go in there, sign up for the newsletter and be engaged so you can start to get communications from Advent Recovery Ministries on a regular basis.

And we are just thrilled to have you here.

I wanted to know how many of you are involved in some form of recovery ministries in your church, even though it may not be linked to this.

Other than the ones that I already introduced.

I see 3 hands or so that are up and that's wonderful we definitely want to be able to connect with you see what you're doing and hopefully you can use this materials to enhance what you are doing already.

So thank you so much for being here and we are looking forward to see what God will do with this group, energizing us and equipping us to do a better ministry as we move forward.

Creating a Vibrant Health Ministry, Part 1

I believe Lily gave you a little introduction of this training and what we are trying to do, right?

And how many of you, let me just see, are currently leaders of health ministries in your church or the conference or?

How many are late members of a team in the church of health ministries and are here to learn and be engaged?

Anybody that doesn't fit any of the 2 categories?

You're not involved at all, and you don't plan to be involved on a health ministries team?

You may not be, but everybody's interested in being involved.

I can tell you, I am seeing God move and bring people into this area like never before.

Because this is a big need as we're going to talk about now.

Is really a huge need in the community for wholeness, for healing.

And we have the opportunity to be extending the ministry of Christ through this way.

Now there are many issues that are obstacles for us in this process.

And we're going to be talking about some of them.

And that's why we decided the very first session of the training will be a session that looks at the philosophy of health ministries.

Why are you doing this in the first place?

And if we look at the philosophy from a biblical and inspirational standpoint, we'll be able to then have a balanced ministry.

Many times what occurs is people don't stop to really understand and study why this is important, this ministry is important, and how to have the right way to affect this ministry in the church.

And then it becomes an unbalanced ministry.

The other, we had like almost half the class, there were pastors.

If you are a minister, you might have come across situations where churches have struggled with this.

You have some people that are passionate, but then they are in 1 extreme really judging others for whether or not they're following others should be following in terms of the diet, in terms of the health principles that we as a church are known for.

And on the other hand, you have others that don't really care at all, really, about that and are not interested.

And so many times, there's friction when it comes around this topic.

Anybody has experienced that in their church?

And unfortunately, this works against the message that God has given us and the opportunity that he has given us to use this message as the right arm.

So this morning, what we will be doing is trying to bring some of these principles from a biblical standpoint, looking at the philosophical foundations, looking at how to have a balanced, biblically based, and a very effective successful ministry in your church.

If you are to do that, you need to look at the biblical inspiration that we received in terms of this.

So the objectives are to introduce you to a biblical and spiritual foundation.

Can you see it in my hat in front of you?

Or to also explore the reasons behind the Ministry of Healing and Wholeness, and examine how to use the right arm, which is what this message is, in the right way.

Now, this is important because most, I don't know if you've got to know about the Golden Circle.

Have you heard of the Golden Circle theory?

This is a theory that I came across, actually, in 1 of those TED Talks.

Those short 15, 20-minute talks that are online.

And people talk about some topics that are very important.

This goes on right on the first module, okay?

And let's see we have 12345678, 09:10, 11:12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20.

And so yeah, we may need to make some 2 or 3.

Lily, Let me just get 1 of them so we can make copies if we have to.

Just set aside 1 of them and the others we can pass out.

All right, so that goes right behind the first module there.

But let me tell you, so the golden circle, I came across this gentleman talking about the importance of this theory, because most successful companies or leaders in the world use this model.

And that is, when you have something that you want to inspire others to do, or if you have an idea or a product that you want to be well accepted, you can share that in different ways.

1 of the ways is to talk about what you have.

So say, for instance, if it's Nike, or if it's a big company, IBM, Apple, and they come out with a product, right?

Focusing on what they're selling or what they want people to grasp is 1 way.

And then they say how they can buy that, or acquire that, or incorporate that.

This is how you can use it, how you can get it, and this is why.

And that's not what most successful people and leaders like Martin Luther King or others.

How many still need it and didn't get it?

So what they do is that they barely spend time talking about the what, but they spend more time talking about why.

So when Apple is trying to sell something, they're not focusing on the product, on the computer itself.

They're focusing on the fact that people that acquire those, they are special people.

And so they focus on why they are better than others, or why this is important.

And they focus on, after they spend a lot of time talking about the why, then they talk about the how.

And then, by the way, this is the product.

So they don't have to really spend too much time discussing the issue at hand, but why that is an important issue.

He was able to mobilize people not to really what he wanted them to do but why that was important.

And once people understood why they embraced it and then he would say come here do that do that they will do it because they understood why that was important.

And the same thing is what we're trying to do here.

We want you to understand why this message is important and then how to administer it, how to bring it to your church, to your community, and lastly what it is, which is the information that you'll be teaching.

But if we don't spend time with the why God has given us, people may not embrace it as they could if they understood that.

The truth that makes men free is, for the most part, the truth that men prefers not to hear.

Home Grown Nutrition, Part 1

Well, good morning and happy Sabbath to you all.

We're going to spend some time together today and tomorrow in looking at homegrown nutrition.

I think that that is a wonderful, wonderful title for this presentation, the series of presentations that we have.

I am from Loma Linda University, and I am the chair of the Nutrition and Dietetics Program at Loma Linda.

And our other presenter is Scott Arrington, here from Third Angels Farm in Stone Mountain, Georgia.

And we have worked together before and it's really good to be back together again here in Orlando.

I thought that I would spend a few minutes in trying to set the stage for what we're going to do as far as gardening and look at the relationship that the gardening had for our parents, for Adam and Eve, and for God.

And God planted a garden eastward in Eden, And there he put man and woman who he had formed in Genesis 2, 8.

Now what kind of a garden was this Garden of Eden?

You know, if we were to cross the pond here and go over to the United Kingdom, to England, and we started talking about a garden, what would we be talking about?

We would be talking about the bushes and the flowering trees and the lawns and everything that is there.

I think that's an important thing, but at the same time, we're going to look at it from the point of view of nutrition and how we can use this space, these opportunities to develop the very best nutrition possible.

Further in Genesis, God says, and out of the ground the Lord God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food.

The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in Genesis 2.9.

But I would like to suggest that there is a connection between what we have seen and read about as far as the Garden of Eden is concerned and gardens that we have in today's world.

And I'd like to suggest that the garden can be a source of spiritual connection.

Adam and Eve met God in the still of the evening in the Garden of Eden.

Our Lord, when he was on earth, spent much time in prayer.

And much of this time, or some of this time, was spent in the Garden of Gethsemane.

And so the Garden of Gethsemane is particularly noted for the anguish that Christ went through, but it was a place that he also got comfort from the angels and from his heavenly father.

So I would like to suggest that there is a parallel today, that a garden is a place where health can be developed or restored.

Gardening places us in a very helpful environment.

Gardening applies the 8 natural remedies that are outlined by Ellen White.

Whether we call it the 8 natural remedies, whether we call it New Start, or whether we call it creation, I think the message is the same.

And I have chosen to use the original as indicated in Alan White's writing, such as the pure air, the sunlight, the avoidance of excess, we'll talk more about that, rest, exercise, proper diet, the use of water, and trust in divine power.

So let's talk a little bit about pure air.

A garden puts us out into an environment where we do have an opportunity to get fresh air.

We can take deep breaths of wonderful, wonderful air.

Can you smell things that you, as you're looking in your mind and going back in your mind, the smells that come.

I have a picture on my iPad here of some mountains and pine trees and fir trees surrounding them.

And I can just smell what is there, as I remember taking this picture a few years ago.

And so, we certainly have that in the garden.

Even the smell of the soil I like, but I also like the flowers.

It helps to produce, or produces vitamin D on the surface of our skin.

And it is necessary for plant growth through photosynthesis.

And through this process, we get the development of oxygen.

And that's part of the air that we are breathing.

So, the sunlight is going to be a very important part of what we're going to benefit when we are in the garden.

The third is refraining from excess, abstaining from drugs and all forms.

But I would like to suggest that temperance or abstaining from excesses also applies to food.

Do you have any idea how many, what we could call gluttons that we have in this world.

In the United States, we have more than 30% of the population who is classified as obese.

They have a body mass index of greater than 30.

About 60 to 70% of the population in the United States is overweight or obese.

And so that is something that I see as a sign of the end times that we're living in, because we are told that in the last days they're going to be gluttony, just as there was just before the flood.

And so I think that gardening is a way in which we can eat food without excess, but still getting all of the nutrition that we definitely need.

And so part of what we are going to see in balance is an opportunity to spend time in meditation as we're in the garden.

It's a very restful place And that brings us now to our fourth 1, and that is rest.

Now, it's not necessarily that we put up a hammock in the garden and we sleep there in the afternoon, but it's a change of pace.

After a busy day in the office or in teaching or whatever we're doing, it's nice to have a change of pace, to get out and work in the garden.

That can be a very important part of our rest for the mind and for the body.

It helps to relieve anxiety and to provide a break from the general rush of life.

Some of us live in a very urban area where there is constant traffic.

I think we see that even here around the hotel.
