Mother of us All

So my message is going to be shorter today.

And you know I normally don't do like a holiday themed message, you know, like a Thanksgiving message.

I don't know, it's just not, nothing wrong with them, I just don't do it.

And I was scheduled to preach a message about how to help people with demon possession, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it on Mother's Day, so I've just, so you're gonna get a Mother's Day sermon this morning, the exorcisms, how to do exorcisms will be next time, so Let's say a quick prayer.

Father, I ask would you just bless this message with your Holy Spirit, it's my simple prayer in Christ's name, amen.

You know, when you think of moms, it's like the embodiment of comfort, right?

When you think about your mom, if you were blessed to have a good mother, and I hope most of you were, it's that person who was always going to be there for you.

You know, in single-parent homes, we know who that parent is, right?

No 1 assumes it's the father, we all assume that it's the mother.

And you know, as a teen, I would come up here and I would go snowboarding, and you know, I was a very reckless snowboarder, so I'd get hurt a lot.

And I remember I would come home all banged up and hurting, and my dad would be like, what happened?

And I'd be like, oh, dad, I over-rotated and I fell really hard on my shoulder.

And he would just say like, oh, that stinks.

And then my mom would come over and she'd be like, Gavielito, what happened?

And I'd be like, oh mom, I fell and I hit my shoulder.

And I would say, that's more like it, you know?

That's what I was hoping to come home to.

Dad was dad, but you know that's how fathers can be, right?

When I was away at college, guess who always called?

During my marriage with Jennifer, we moved out of state 3 times.

First year of marriage, we went to upstate New York.

We also spent about half a year in Hawaii.

We spent about a year and a half in Colorado.

And all those times, guess who was the 1 who called?

I remember 1 time I was on the phone with mom, it was while we were living in Colorado, and she happened to pass my dad in the hallway.

And my dad got on the phone and he said, hi son, you doing good?

Alrighty son, you take care." And essentially all he wanted to know is, are you alive?

And then, you know, that was dad, you know.

And I have a great relationship with my father.

But Moms are known for more of those nurturing aspects.

Actually, I got a better question for you.

What is something, when you think of your mother, what is a quality that pops to your head?

Some of us have the la chancla, you know.

Yeah, and we could think of so many, I mean we could sit here and probably go over dozens of, you know, adjectives that describe mom.

That warm, nurturing, everything is going to be okay kind of a feeling.

I mean, I've talked to some pretty hardened individuals.

You talk to hardened gangbangers, tattoos all over their face, you talk about mom, they'll start to tear up.

And Mother's Day is a special day to remember moms and to not just remember moms, to remember these beautiful qualities.

Because these beautiful qualities are actually a resemblance of the power behind mom.

And, but what about people who don't have moms?

You know, like I mentioned last weekend, we had our grief care meeting here, and a young lady came to our grief care meeting who lost her mother somewhat recently in her early 30s, and it really shook her up.

I mean, myself included, I lost my mom in my early 30s, which to me felt very premature.

And I had a very close relationship with my mother.

And it was just so weird to think that extremely important person, how can they just not be a part of your life anymore?

And you know, many of us here are older, and as you get older, ideally, you know, your parents go before you do.

And most of us, you know, we've lost our mothers.

Essentially, who is your mom when mom is gone?

Well, a lot of people will tell you, I don't have a mom anymore.

I'm going to suggest you a very interesting answer to that question and it's going to come from Scripture.

A lot of people will naturally say Christ and to a large degree, yes, that's true, but the Bible has an even deeper answer than that, that I'm going to suggest you.

Jesus, He actually did invest Himself in a lot of motherly qualities.

Let's open our Bibles to Matthew chapter 23, Matthew chapter 23 and verse 37.

We're gonna see that Christ, who was the ultimate man, also did invest himself with some motherly type qualities.
