You are about to enjoy a presentation recorded at the 2024 Michigan Conference Camp Meeting held at Cedar Lake, Michigan.

We pray that the Lord will bless you as you listen.

Father in heaven, we're grateful for the privilege to be able to come and to learn and grow together.

We pray that you will be with us as we look at preaching your word.

All right, so we're going to continue from where we left off yesterday.

This is somewhat preparing the message part 2, and if we have time, we're going to get into building the message.

And so we looked at 3 different types of sermons.

Now I do want to say that every sermon should be exegetical.

You have exegesis and you have eisegesis.

So exegesis is bringing out what the Word says.

And so we do not want to force a meaning into the text, we want to allow the text to speak.

And so you can have an exegetical sermon, even if it's topical, because you're looking at what God says throughout the entire Bible on a subject.

And so exegesis is bringing out what the word says, and eisegesis, putting in what it says, and you do not want to do that.

So we looked at topical sermons and how we look at, in topical sermons, a subject throughout the entire Bible.

Or not necessarily the entire Bible, but generally you're looking throughout multiple books in the Bible on a specific topic.

There's a lot of strengths to it, there's some weaknesses too.

Strengths are evangelistic meetings, weaknesses, probably not as strong for church meetings, for church sermons.

And then we looked at a narrative sermon, and a narrative sermon is Simply taking a story and presenting a message from that story or that biography.

And I went over 1 time yesterday the story of Joseph and God sent a man.

And I remember that I gave that as a week of prayer at a youth camp 1 time.

And I had young people saying, I will never think of Joseph again, the same again ever.

And so it makes it can make a strong impact there.

Now we're going to look at expository sermon.

I'm just reviewing still yesterday, but we'll look at it now.

Preaching from, not for, from a particular verse or passage.

So you are taking a passage, whatever that is.

Now when you're looking at an expository sermon, you want the passage to, you don't really want to cut it off in mid sentence or in mid thought or something like that.

So if you're preaching on the parable of the sower and the seed, you have 4 sermons there.

You can have 4 sermons there, and I've done that before, but it still needs to be you're preaching from the entire passage, even though you're emphasizing the wayside soil and the thorny ground and the good ground and all of that.

And so it's still coming from the passage, you're still pulling information and material from the passage, but it can be anywhere from a verse to a collection of verses to a chapter to an entire book.

Those would all be exegetical or expository sermons.

The passage dictates the message and you're opening up the particular passage.

So your advantages, I think we already talked about this, more difficult to take it out of context because you are presenting it in context.

The message is seen as coming directly from God.

And it's easier to find a sermon subject.

So if you are studying the book of Romans, you can just preach from Romans chapter 1 or Romans chapter that'd be kind of a big subject to preach from, but you might do Romans chapter 1 verses 1 to 16, and then you could do another time of Romans chapter 1 verses 17 and probably to the end of the chapter there.

You have to find where your divisions are that would work well.

And so you could, you're studying the Book of Romans, you can preach from the Book of Romans.

Disadvantages, harder to address specific needs, tends to be more academic and less relevant.

People do not want to come to church and hear a professor talk about all of the intricacies of the language and the historical detail.

So it can add significantly to your understanding and to your sermon.

And I've had people say, oh, I always like listen for those gems.

But they don't want to just go through and say, Well, this is in the aorist tense, and this word is a passive, and it'll drive everybody crazy, including yourself, probably.

And so you want to be—it can be—expository can be more academic.

Pastor Doug Batchelor does that often, but he uses it so that it gives more meaning to the Word that we're looking at.

Yeah, but what I'm saying is you don't want to—you can absolutely bring those things out.

You can say that this is a perfect tense, and you can talk about that.

Make sure that you know what you're talking about if you talk about that.

And so sometimes I hear statements made that I'm just a little bit uncomfortable with.

Well, normally when I hear that, let me give you an example of where I've heard this multiple times.

Well, Strong's Concordance says this word can mean this, so this is what it means in the passage.

Well, you have to know how to use the resources because Strong's Concordance can be giving you how this word is translated.

It might be translated this way a hundred times and this way 2 times.

You can't take the word that's translated that it's only 2 times and say that's the meaning in this passage.

And so you have to be a little careful with that.

Use the resources, it's still good, but just be careful.

But You're not gonna wanna go through, say we're in Romans, and you're dissecting every single word and saying what the tense is of every single word and all of this.

That would be- That's wrong thinking when you said this word.

That would be too, that's gonna be something that you only pay attention to because you're paying to take a college class and you need to get an A in it or whatever.

You're in church, people are not paying to take the class and they're not wanting to go over every intricate detail.

But if it sheds light on the idea and the concept, go ahead and use it.

Now I would say that your rule of thumb is that what it says in English is almost always what it says in the original language, too.

So our Bible translations, as long as you're not using a paraphrase or something like that, but as long as you're using a King James or New King James or New American Standard or something like that, then there have been teams of scholars that know a lot more about the biblical language than any of us ever can or will that have been studying the passage in the context.

And so generally speaking, then what it says in English is to a great extent, what it says in the original language as well.

If you compare different Bible versions, that's going to give you about as good as going into the deep dive into the original language.

And so, and if you have, I mean, you can get free Bible programs that are going to help you significantly as well.

So Esword is the classic free Bible program.

It's not very good on a Mac, but it works well on a PC.

And so you can get a bunch of free useful resources.

1 thing I like on Esword is the, I think it's called the King James Concordance or something like that, but it will tell you how many times this word is translated all the different ways in the Bible, which is very, very helpful.

Now if you want to go deeper, you can go to Logos or Accordance or something like that, but you don't need to.

Another option is Blue Letter Bible as well.

And then Bible Gateway has a lot of resources.

So there's a lot there, but sometimes I don't want to get too hung up into that because really getting into the text and allowing God to speak to the text from you and then being able to put it together is what's going to be the most helpful for you in preparing a sermon.
