Living Free: Building a Better Brain, Body, and Habits—for Good!, Part 1

Father in heaven, thank you that we can have this time together to learn and to learn with a purpose for you are coming soon and we just pray for your presence that you will come and be our teacher.

Enlighten our minds as we study and learn and pray together.

I want to begin today with a quotation that I carry in my Bible.

Actually, I'm gonna share a little bit of my testimony because people will hear health lectures and they'll look at me and they'll say, hi, they'll say, oh, sure, it's easy for you to tell people what to do, you're kind of thin, you look like a librarian, you know, probably are 1 of those people that have all your paper clips lined in the same direction.

But the truth is, is I did not come from an Adventist background.

Anyway, I came from a very violent home and started running away from home when I was 5 years old.

And by the time I was 11, I was a serial runaway and involved in all the, you know, fill in the blanks, what happens to kids that go wrong.

In addition, I developed an eating disorder, I developed bulimia.

And so I was using drugs, running away, and bulimic, all by age 11.

Fractured family, extreme physical abuse.

And so I had this bulimia for 30 years, until I was 31 years old.

So when I was 17, fortunately I've always loved libraries because they're quiet and nobody can holler in a library, so I've always somehow kept my grades up.

So I ran away for good when I was 17, and my father had left home when I was quite young.

And I came back to take care of my mother when I found out that she was dying of cancer.

On the way to a chemotherapy treatment, I passed by a complex of buildings in Riverside, California that were not so attractive, but the landscaping was really beautiful.

And I remember making a mental note of how beautiful the landscaping was.

And I said, there's some sort of roofing and air conditioning company.

They must make venting systems 7 days a week.

And the buildings aren't so hot, but the landscaping is beautiful.

And my friend, who was a Christian scientist, I was an atheist at that time.

My friend who was a Christian scientist said, oh no, no, no, that's a religious school.

And I remember saying to her, like it was yesterday, anybody that landscapes like that can't be all bad.

And she said, well, you know, they're really not too fond of atheists.

But if you really want to get in, if you tell them the body's a temple, you'll get in.

And at that time I was going through a medical assisting program, trying to find work while I took care of my mother.

In those days, if you were not a Seventh-day Adventist, you had to be interviewed by the president of the school.

And I remember going in with a nursing uniform on, and I said, Dr.

Osmundson, I don't know too much about you people, but I really like the idea that the body's a temple.

And he put his arm around me and he said, you know, I wish we had more young people like you on this campus.

I just knew that this man was very easy to con.

And I didn't know if the whole group of these people were this way.

But I liked the landscaping, and I wanted to go there.

And so I always tell people, keep your yards.

I mean, it really does make a difference.

And to this day, I'm so, I just wanna speak through my yard about God's love, because I never know who will pass by and maybe see a little bit of God's love there.

And God drew me in there, and I met my husband there.

He was a backslidden Adventist, which was why he was attracted to me at that time.

So we married and the Lord kind of took us out of circulation, which is probably a good thing.

And we were in ministry very shortly after our marriage, and were in ministry for many years until his death last year.

And he was a passionate man for God, loved the Lord, the videos that you see, the clips that you see were done by him.

He won more than 60 international awards for his productions.

And so today I stand before you not because I am credentialed and not because I have degrees in nutrition and management and statistics and things like that.

I was telling a friend here that I took a speech class in college and the topic that I chose was the joy of knitting.

I had no intention of doing anything public.

And the Bible says the gifts and callings of God are without repentance.

And so he has a calling for every single 1 of you here today.

And I believe that the index of misery is going up and not down, amen?

And so God's people need to catch up to the moment.

And so I want to read a statement to you, and I'm so passionate about our need of linking the spiritual with the health message.

And more than just Jesus, and I hate to use the word just, but we have the Hallelujah Acres people, and we have the Daniel Diet, and we have the Rick Warren people out there, and they understand about coming to Jesus and grace.

We have particular testing truths for the last days that reveal God's true character.

And I will tell you as a former Catholic, that the reason that I came to Christ was not through the health message.

I would throw up up to a dozen times a day and I was doing all that stuff that people who are desperate do.

And it was not caring for my body temple that had any appeal to me at all, because I didn't care if I lived or died.

I had no desire to live out a miserable, painful existence.

And what turned me to God was when I learned that there is no eternally burning hell.

The moment that somebody said that to me, I thought, now there's a God that has more of a heart than I do.

So I do not believe in hiding our truths and only presenting the gospel of Christ.

Because to rightly represent God and to rightly present God, people need to understand the truth about him, the resurrection, the second coming, and all of these glorious truths that mean so much that there will be an end to sin and suffering, that there is a God of justice who's in control, who will put an end to all this misery, who hates evil, and he will destroy evil, and it will never rise again the second time.

To me, that's more appealing than broccoli, frankly.

You can only get so much mileage out of nutrition because terrible things can happen to good people.

That's the world we live in, and we're gonna talk about that.

We're gonna talk about how to minister to suffering people who are not gonna get their miracle.

Sometimes in health classes, we act as if everybody is gonna have perfect lab tests.

We don't believe in righteousness by lab tests.

Cancer Prevention, Part 1

Welcome to the Cancer Prevention Seminar.

We will, as time is coming, we will, the first part is kind of introduction.

Introduction from myself, and then introduction from yourself.

Before we go, I will just introduce a little bit about myself and what is that, why we have this type of course.

This is, it started in 2008 that they got a group together in Loma Linda, and they want to do a health summit in the West.

But there was a couple of things that happened there.

First is that the marketing was a little poor.

And If you think that the Californians will go to a program like that just giving a flyer in the church, it will not work.

So you have to go, you have to promote, you have to go again, and you have to convince the local church.

But they were looking for someone to do the cancer prevention seminar.

And so, they were looking for us to do the cancer prevention.

So they got a group of physicians and professors in the school and said, who is working for the Hispanics?

And then I was 1 involved on that, and then they recruit me.

And it's supposed to be me and 2 more doctors.

And ended up that the doctors are so busy, it fell on me.

And I had to do the program by myself, and I didn't like that at first.

So it's Too much of a burden here for I have to teach and I have.

And then when I did in California, the next year they invite me to come here.

And then the thing is start building up And then I went to other place, and then they asked me to do in English.

And then this is the third year that I'm doing that.

So what started with something that we think, well, I'm not into that, it became something that I am excited about and I have the opportunity to go overseas to do that.

Not to say, hey, I'm nothing, but just to say that when the Lord gives you something a task to you and you don't like, pray about that.

Because you might go to a place that you never dream about.

And so, just because I accepted something that I should not accept it.

But anyway, so you want to say something?

So I am from Brazil, And I am in the United States for about 20 years, except for some years that I spend in Hong Kong.

I was the director of health promotion in our 2 hospitals in Hong Kong.

And I originally came from Brazil, where I was working.

I worked for the church most of the time.

I think I have more than 30 years working for the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

I was a physician and a missionary doctor in Brazil in our hospital, in Sao Paulo Adventist Hospital.

And then we went to a lifestyle clinic like Weimar Wildwood.

And I was the director for 7 years of that clinic.

Then I finished In Loma Linda, I finished my master in public health and a doctor in public health.

When I went to Hong Kong, and then they called me to go back to Loma Linda, and that's why I am here today.

We have 10 sessions that we go over on different cancers, and then we go over on the results of the seven-day Adventist Health Study.

Then we will go over the myths and truths about cancer.

Then we will do the screenings, what are the main screenings, and the main cause of cancer that we know.

So we are covering a lot of things in this class.

The bad thing is that I have videos for this class, but my videos are all online and I cannot access.

Because they didn't, well, I cannot access, OK?

But the videos are written, and then if you wanna take copies, you can take.

I have handouts and I have videos for, videos, no, CDs for this class.

I, I used to give them, and I'll tell you, just for the Spanish seminar, I spent $70 for a bunch of handouts.

And I say, my wife is going to ask for divorce and all of that.

If I continue giving this from my pocket.

I am not a missionary, but I am in a missionary salary.

And then in the break, we can discuss a little bit.

It's $10, any handouts, and $10 for the CD.

I mean, You can copy, you can do whatever.

But I'm sorry, I usually don't charge anything.

But I mean, it's not fair that I am putting a lot of money from my pocket, and then I might not be able to continue doing that too long.

So coming back to myself, I finished this program.

And then the reason that they ask for the cancer is that they have a lot of cancer in the churches.

And so our churches are having a bunch of, nobody's doing anything and nobody knows anything.

And cancer is a disease that takes a long time to be diagnosed.

And then when they are diagnosed, many people come to the seminar because they have cancer or they know someone.

But when we diagnose it, it is already too late, most of the time, for prevention.

And then we have this situation, and the church does not, or did not have at that time something to touch or to address those issues.

Carola Janiak

Hands-on Approach to Pain Management, Part 1

Welcome to the Hands-On Approach to Pain Management.

My name is Karola Janiak, and I am the school director, owner of Hands-On Medical Massage School.

And we started this school about 8 years ago, and Tanya was there when we started actually.

Thomas, so he was my mentor in massage and hydrotherapy.

My background is nursing, So I came out as a nurse, as an RN, and I planned to just take some massage classes, learn some natural healing, and then go off and work for Predican Institute.

Thomas and loved it because we got patients from all over the world that came with all different types of problems, mostly pain-related.

And it was amazing what I saw, these people getting well in just short periods of time and leaving sometimes with no pain at all or at least 80 to 90 percent of their pain gone just through massage and hydrotherapy and natural remedies, and nutrition, of course, as well.

So it was really an exciting time, and I'm just so fortunate that I got to spend that time with Dr.

Thomas, and unfortunately he did pass away.

But we wanted to do something to keep that vision going.

Thomas used to always say, catch the vision.

And so I'm like, oh, we have to continue this.

We wanted to continue it and we wanted it to be close to Loma Linda University.

So we're only like 3, 3 and a half miles from the university.

We have the medical students from there that rotate through.

We have all different type of affiliations as well as a clinic on campus.

We have a medical massage clinic at the Drayson Center where we have about 10 therapists.

So it's another place where our graduates can work after they graduate.

So anyways, that is Hands-On Medical Massage School.

And you'll learn a little bit more about us in the school.

And we have a couple of our graduates here with us.

But I would also like to start with Tanya, who has been with us from the very beginning.

We actually had instructor courses in my home before we had the building up and ready for students.

So we're very thankful that Tanya was 1 of those first ones.

So I'm going to let her introduce herself.

My name is Tanya Frederick and after I'd given my life to God, I had no idea what to do as far as a career.

I actually went to Southern University and I never knew what major to take.

And so I started really praying and pleading with God to show me what He had in mind for me.

And so He started putting things in motion and he showed me without any doubt that massage therapy was the way that he had planned for me.

I also had decided that I never ever wanted to teach.

My mother is a teacher and my sister is a teacher.

I come from a line of teachers and the 1 thing I never wanted to do was teach, but I asked God to show me where he wanted me and he brought me right to Corolla and I'm now teaching at the medical massage school and I'm so blessed.

God has better plans for us than we ever have for ourselves.

I'd like to introduce you also to some of our graduates.

I came to the school in 2006 and It was God that led me there.

I didn't even know that I was supposed to do that course with hands-on medical missionary school but I was blessed and I learned a lot and after that I decided to go to Jamaica and set up a little lifestyle center there.

We have about 3 different places in Jamaica and they're all excited about the work and the Lord just led me here so that I could share with you.

I didn't even plan to be here, this is also a miracle.

So we have been doing cooking classes, teaching hydrotherapy, teaching massage and most of the people in Jamaica are so excited about it and they are excited because natural remedies work.

My name is Nancy Schmieder and I'm from New York State.

I went to California to take hands-on medical massage.

I would come to the health summit, and I would take classes with the CHIP program, and classes, Dr.

And I just wanted to just expand my health ministry that I have going back near Rochester, New York.

And I thought massage would be a really nice asset to it, I guess.

So I wanted to avoid some new age things that come with the massage.

And I had actually come to a health summit a couple years ago, I'm a recent graduate.

Darlene, I keep looking at you and I'm like, is that Darlene?

I also took a nutrition consulting class from Darlene Flaney there, and that's a whole other story.

But Anyhow, so I ended up going to California and taking some classes or massage.

And I plan on opening up a practice or whatever it's called back in New York, but I haven't gotten there yet.

I have a little information about breathing.

You have a handout there that we passed out to you.

And breathing is so important, so important with health and relieving different symptoms, especially if you're suffering from pain.

Learning proper breathing will help reduce pain.

They've done a lot of studies with breathing, different breathing exercises, And it's very medically beneficial.

Pain management reduces blood pressure, help you with stress.

It's a great anti-stress technique to use.

On the handout, it says to test to see if you are breathing properly that you place 1 hand on your chest.

You can try 1 hand on your chest and 1 hand on your stomach near your navel and just breathe regularly.

And if you see that your chest is rising more than your abdomen or your stomach, then you're probably not breathing correctly.

You wanna make sure that you're breathing deep.

You want to get into your, you want your breaths to get into your lower lungs, and that will take breathing and using your diaphragm.

So as you're doing that, we are going to take a deep breath and breathe in on the count of 4, and then we're going to hold it, a count of 7, and then we'll exhale, a count of 8.

We're going to see some amazing footage about the effect of nutrition and exercise on children's brains, academics, suicide risk, drugs.

We've emphasized today a big picture paradigm, but the reality is when you begin to change the diet and lifestyle, very profound changes take place in the brain and body.

In fact, without regular daily exercise, it is almost impossible to learn.
