Pentecost 2: Write On My Heart

Heart Donation

Father in heaven, we're thankful today that you came, you lived, you died, you rose again.

And you're making intercession on our behalf.

And as we pray our prayers ascend to you and they're mingled with your prayers.

And you utter them, those prayers with groanings that we can't even understand, but you translate our needs to the Father, Not because he's unwilling and not because you're unwilling, but because you are willing.

And so I ask you Father that today you would again draw near to us and that you would demonstrate your power in our midst through looking at your word.

Okay, for some of you, you haven't been here at all maybe so far, we've been talking about the heart.

And we have seen that we live in an age of broken hearts, and that God loves those who are of a broken and contrite spirit.

He came into this world, he identified with us, his heart was broken for us, and as a result he knows what to do with those broken hearted people.

And secondly, we learned that he can wipe away bitterness and he can wipe away anger, he can take care of the wounded heart, and he can give us a heart transplant.

We saw from the Old Testament to the New Testament, the largest quotation from the old to the new was a heart transplant.

And it had 4 different categories, sanctification, reconciliation, mission, and justification.

And in our last hour, we looked at why in the world would justification be put last in the list in Hebrews, last in the list in Corinthians, and actually in the book of Romans, even though in chapter 5, where we had a scripture reading, it appears as though it's just a punctiliar act.

It actually is an ongoing process, Romans chapter 12, where what happens?

We have not only declaration, but demonstration in the life.

Adventist theology is built around that understanding, isn't it?

And in Revelation chapter 14 and verse 12, it says, here is the patience of the saints.

Here are they that keep the commandments of God and have the faith of Jesus.

The faith of Jesus leads to obedience in the context of patient endurance, right?

I have declared each of you receive that gift, that measure of faith, Romans chapter 12, and that measure of faith then will spring up in your life into demonstration.

Every single person in Hebrews 11 follows that pattern, every single person.

So now, not just heart brokenness, not just heart transplant, not just heart beat, but now we want to look at a heart donation.

Because of what God has done and is doing.

Now, I want to look at something that I think is kind of fascinating.

Let me tell you what I'm going to tell you and then I'll see if I can tell it to you.

First of all, I want to look at Isaiah 58 with you.

Isaiah 58 forms the foundation for 2 days that are prominent in the book of Hebrews and are prominent in Adventist and biblical understanding.

It's the day of atonement and it's the Sabbath day.

Both of those are in the book of Hebrews.

Both of those are uplifted as important in the book of Hebrews.

Both of those are uplifted as important in the chapter Isaiah 58.

As a matter of fact, if you were to look at the promises and prohibitions concerning both the Sabbath and the Day of Atonement in the book of Hebrews, you would see they're almost parallel.

And both days are lifted up as being a sign, a demonstrative sign of God's people at the end of time in the book of Hebrews and in Isaiah 58.

I want to show you something in Hebrews that I didn't show you and then we'll go to Isaiah 58.

You see Hebrews is all about the grace of God being revealed in a new covenant experience, but the bottom line what God wants is this, verse 20 of chapter 13.

Now may the God of peace, by the way, Romans chapter 5 says that he pours love and peace into our hearts, justification, right?

Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of what kind of covenant is it?

In other words, that largest donation from the Old Testament to the New Testament, Jeremiah 31, Hebrews 8 and 10.

May that great shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the everlasting covenant make you, what does it say next, complete in every good work to do his will, working in you what is well-pleasing in his sight through Jesus Christ, we're never going to claim we did it, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever, amen.

How many think that's a great summary text of declaration and demonstration, isn't it?

Now, having said that, let's go back now to Isaiah 58.

Let's see if we can find, first of all, the day, the Day of Atonement, and let's see then if we can find the Sabbath.

The Sabbath is in Hebrews chapter 4, and the Day of Atonement is in Hebrews chapter 10, verse 25.

Cry aloud, Spare not, lift up your voice like a trumpet.

Trumpets, trumpets, lift up your voice like a trumpet.

In other words, there is a loud cry going on that is related to trumpets.

So there's a loud cry related to trumpets.

Tell my people their transgression, that it happened on the Day of Atonement.

And the house of Judah, their sins, and that happened on the Day of Atonement.

Am I convincing you that Isaiah 58 is talking about the Day of Atonement?

This is kind of developing in my mind right now.

So we have the Day of Atonement, but let's look down and see what the other day is.

If you turn your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on my holy day.

Call the Sabbath a delight, a holy day of the Lord honorable, and shall honor him, not doing your own ways, nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking your own words.

In other words, not just declaration demonstration.

There is the Day of Atonement and there is the Sabbath day.

I mean, this is the seventh day Adventist chapter.

I mean, this is the day of Atonement people and the Sabbath day.

I mean, we could just say amen and leave, but not yet.

Because there are these 2 days, but notice there is a problem.

Go back now to verse 2, Isaiah 58 verse 2.
