The Gentleness of God

Our Father which are in heaven, Father I want to thank you so much for bringing us here this morning to study your word.

Father my heart goes out to pastor in more ways than 1 and I just want to lift up his sweet family once more.

Just want to ask that you would please be the great physician in that hospital room with Luna.

That you would please help her, Lord, get through this sickness.

I pray for our family members, our friends, our loved ones, anyone that we personally know that is sick, that is battling for their life, we lift them up to you now.

And Father, while maybe some of us don't have any family members or friends that are ill, all of us, Father, are battling with sin.

And I just pray this morning that you would touch us, that the gentleness of God would touch each and every 1 of our hearts, that we would leave this place refreshed, knowing that we've been touched by the Savior.

Please, dear God, give us the gift of your Holy Spirit.

How many of you have ever done canvassing or cold portering?

Any of you have ever knocked on doors with religious books?

I've had the great privilege, and I still do it often, but I've had the great privilege of doing it for over 10 years, full time.

And 1 of the experiences that is kind of nerve wracking is when you get to a door that says no soliciting.

That's it, there's a soul in there, right?

And so I remember I got to this 1 particular door and it didn't just say no soliciting.

It listed off the different religions, don't dare knocking on my door, don't do this, don't do that.

The door was literally covered with all kinds of messages.

Is this maybe the last opportunity this person has?

And as I knocked on the door, I could hear rumbling from inside.

And the man opened the door and he was as angry as you can be.

And I said, hello, sir, my name is David.

I'm a student working on a scholarship program for school.

And he began to just go off on me, just cursing everything you could imagine, getting in my face.

And as he's spitting on me and cursing at me, I just said 1 simple phrase.

I said, sir, do you have any prayer requests?

And I wasn't daring to share with him any books or anything like that.

I just said, sir do you have any prayer requests?

And at that at that he got even angrier and he began to say, you pray to your God that I won't beat you up right now and all this stuff and I said okay sir I got the message I will pray for you as I leave is that what you like and so I quickly left anyways it couldn't kind of shook me up I just started that street and I have a lot of more houses to go to.

And I was kind of, you know, shaking up a bit, like, wow, what just happened there?

And so the next few doors, I was not myself.

I was kind of in a daze wondering, Lord, did I almost die?

And I remember as I'm getting now, maybe 30 minutes later, I'm getting across the street from where that gentleman lived.

And as I'm getting across the street, knocking on the last door of the block, guess who sees me?

I'm now in front of his, you know, across the street and he sees me and he storms out.

So he storms out, he comes over to see me and I'm thinking, here we go, he's gonna finish me off now.

And as he approaches me, he says, young man, I said, yes, sir.

And you know obviously I wasn't able to say anything other than the fact you know do you have any prayer requests and I said well yes sir I am.

He now seems to have been shaken up by something.

And he looks at me and he says, young man, I'm supposed to be a Christian, But the way I treated you was not how a true Christian should treat anybody.

And as he looked at me, I saw a change in him.

And he said, young man, Your gentleness has made an impact on my life.

And so I was able to share with him some of the books and he ended up getting a bunch of those books.

I pray that his life was changed as a result.

I just tried to be as gentle and as calm as God could help me be.

We have been doing a series on the fruit of the Spirit.

Galatians chapter 5, and I would like to turn your attention to our scripture reading.

Galatians chapter 5, verse 22 and 23, the Bible says, but the fruit of the Spirit is what, everybody?

All right, joy, peace, longsuffering, and here is where we are going to take the message for this morning.

Gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance against such there is no loss.

So 1 of the fruit of the Spirit is this word gentleness.

When you have the Holy Spirit in you, you're gonna be what?

Now ladies and gentlemen, what in the world does that word gentle mean?

If you were to look at the Greek word, the Greek definition of that word gentleness, you'll notice that it means kindness.

It also means moral goodness and integrity.

So ladies and gentlemen, the word gentleness can mean goodness or kindness.

If you're with me so far, let me hear a hearty happy, I'm still awake, amen.

All right, so get this, gentleness means kindness.

Now how does God express the exceeding riches of his grace?

We all know the verse in Ephesians chapter 2 verse 8 we are saved by what?

I can't hear we are saved by what everybody?

Ephesians 2 verse 8 says for we are saved by grace it is the gift of God but notice what makes us interested in that grace do not miss this friend Listen to what the Bible says in Ephesians chapter 2 verse 7 to 9 that in the ages to come God might show the exceeding riches of his grace in his what?
