The Sanctuary and the Holy Spirit, Part 1

I had some fun just learning a little bit about who you are.

My name is George Baute and I currently am an instructor at Ouachita Hills College and also at the Academy.

Prior to that, I have pastored in the Kansas-Nebraska Conference and in the Carolina Conference.

We ended up going to Ouachita because we wanted to go with our son who is a student there and the Lord opened the way.

I consider it actually a great privilege to be here.

You know, to me, it matters to matter, you know?

It matters to matter, that your life matters.

And to be part of an institution that's making an impact in the closing scenes of Earth's history, to me, to be on the cutting edge, to me is a great privilege.

And so I'm grateful to be part of WYC and all these regional conferences as well as GYC that's preparing young people for the closing work and to go home.

And to me that is a privilege, very exciting.

But why don't we begin with a word of prayer, I'll tell you a little bit more about myself and then we'll get into our discussion for today.

Our Father we come to you thanking you again for your kindness, your goodness and tender mercies that you shower us with every day.

Lord, we know that our presence in this room today is not an accident, but a divine, part of your divine plan for each of us.

And so this day we ask for your presence.

We thank you for the blood of Christ that washes away all of our sins and for his righteousness that covers us.

We are grateful for the invitation to come to the throne of grace and to receive grace.

Lord please shut us in, speak to our hearts.

You know the needs of every person in this room.

And Father even if I did I couldn't meet it but you can.

And so I pray that today we will recognize your voice speaking to us now father as your servant I pray that you will give me the thoughts today that you would have me to speak and withhold anything that you do not want spoken We pray that your name will be glorified and your people blessed and strengthened is our prayer.

We thank you and ask this all in Christ's name.

I have a particular interest in the sanctuary because the sanctuary tells me about Jesus.

And that was my beautiful wife, by the way, came in and gave me the signal.

So we were Catholic and when I I remember coming when my mother accepted the message, the 3 Angels message my mother took me to a church in Glendale California.

It was the Glendale City Church and they were having a VBS and it was on the sanctuary for children.

And I remember that they had a number of crafts that were sanctuary geared.

And 1 of the things somebody had, it was a labor of love, but they built the Ark of the Covenant for all the kids out of wood.

And they had the angels, it was really cool and then inside they had gotten some wood, shaped it like the 10 Commandments and then a Xerox copy of the commandments was on the block of wood and I remember holding that in my hand as a young person and I was awed that I was holding within my hands the laws that govern the universe.

And as a 10 year old this blew my mind that I was holding this document.

In my home my mother taught us to reverence the Bible but of course we were taught never to read it.

It was the work of the priest to explain to us.

And it left an indelible impression upon me.

Then later in life, Sadly, I walked away from the Lord, got confused about some things, and went out into the world.

And that ran its course, and I came to the place that I attempted to take my life.

And Jesus stepped into my life, and obviously stopped that process, and won me to Him.

And later when I came to the Lord, I came back to the church, the issue of the sanctuary was 1 that was being very much agitated.

Some people said it was true, others said there was no truth in it.

And so I began to study the Bible for myself, what a unique and novel idea, to find out if this was true.

And what I discovered is that if you were to take out everything that has to do with the sanctuary, this book would fall apart because it is saturated with sanctuary terminology and imagery.

Especially the New Testament, the New Testament writer assumes that the reader knows the sanctuary.

Doesn't take the time to explain things because the assumption is that you know it.

And as I began to study the sanctuary, the New Testament came to life for me.

And so in these presentations, I'm going to take a slightly different tact than many do.

For years, I would hear the sanctuary taught, and I'm not putting anybody down, that's not what I'm tempted to do, but they were divorcing, many times unknowingly, the teachings of the sanctuary with practicality of the life.

So blue means this and gold means that and that's nice but I'm struggling with sin.

And so to me I needed something practical and 1 day I sat in the presence of a woman who had that understanding of the sanctuary.

And as she began to explain it, the bells and whistles began to go off, connections were made, and I saw the sanctuary differently.

So my love and joy of the sanctuary is that I understand more clearly what Jesus is doing to save you and me.

And I hope that that is communicated to you today.

Now in our presentations, I'm going to be giving 6 presentations.

The first 1 is entitled, the importance of the sanctuary message.

And what I'm going to do here, I'm just going to look at, we're going to look at some quotes from the Spirit of Prophecy and what we can glean from it, of the importance of this message to us here and now.

And I want to do that just to clear the air a little bit, because of some of the controversy that exists amongst us as a people.

The second message, the sanctuary, a model for prayer, we're going to look at the sanctuary as a model for prayer.

We're going to learn that the sanctuary, as we use it for a model for prayer, very much puts us in tune with present truth and keeps it in the forefront of our mind.

And so we're going to look at the sanctuary as a model for prayer.

The third thing we're going to look at is the daily.

The Old Testament priests conducted a service which we'll talk about in more detail called the daily.

Well today you and I have a counterpart to that in our experience in walking with Jesus.

And we're going to learn that the daily teaches us how to have victory over the power of sin.

The fourth thing then that we're going to look at is the good news of the judgment.

You know A lot of people will say there is a judgment.

A lot of people don't like talking about it, because there's a fear factor in the judgment.

We're going to study and we're going to discover that God is not the 1 to fear in the judgment.

Now, when I say fear, I don't mean reverence and respect.

Jesus says you don't know the truth and the truth is going to do what?

And we're going to learn What is truly the fear factor in the judgment?

But we're going to discover it's not God.

In that study we're going to look at the mechanics and it's going to create the framework for us of how the judgment operates.

Fear God, Part 1

Well, listen, we want to welcome everyone who is here with us.

I know that all of the meetings sounded, you know, just incredible.

If I'm not here, you won't get my seminar, but nevertheless, I too wanted to go ahead and hear some of the other presentations.

But I believe the Lord is gonna bless for those of us who are here, and I know that God has something special to show us as it relates to the experience of the 3 angels' messages.

You're going to find that it is 1 thing to talk about the importance of the message itself and we need to understand the message intellectually.

But at the same time, there's an experience that's supposed to come out of the message.

And that's where many a times we find ourselves missing the mark.

So what happens is, a person like myself, I'm going to be honest with you, I have attended many meetings throughout my 20 years of being in the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

And I've been at meetings where I've heard the most strongest points of present truth that I've ever heard in my life.

But the 1 thing that I kept finding over and over and over again, even when I used to attend, or not used to, I still attend, you know, certain camp meetings where you could hear a lot of the wonderful truths for this time.

I mean hearing Daniel and Revelation faithfully taught.

I'm not talking about the erroneous things that people are using nowadays with Daniel and Revelation.

I'm talking about true faithful Bible teaching.

You'll hear a lot of expressions about the need to get ready.

The fact that there's a coming crisis via the Sunday law that will be passed in America first, and then it's going to branch out throughout all the world.

And it's going to take the majority of the people in the world to an overwhelming surprise.

That's why the Bible says that there are few that will stay on that road that leads to eternal life according to Matthew chapter 7.

So As I'm listening to all these messages, I notice something.

Year after year, you have the same meetings.

You can call the meetings whatever you want.

You can call them all the famous group meetings like this 1 here.

You know, you got GYC, you have Army, you have all sorts of different camp meetings in different groups.

And what happens is it's almost like people just keep coming year by year, but as you dialogue with the people you find that sometimes we're either in the same experience or worse.

In other words, how is it that we can keep hearing these startling messages, keep hearing all these powerful truths and all these things, but it does not bring a practical change in our experience that actually sticks.

I'm not talking about emotional excitement, you know, when we're at holy convocations like this, this is typically where people can stay very focused.

We're in the mountains, we're away from a lot of other things, you know, so it's easier to stay focused.

But typically, when we get back into the valleys of what we call life, it's like a lot of times, all these great things we've learned has gone right out the window, and we're either back to where we were or even worse.

Can any of you relate to what I'm talking about?

And this is why it gets to a point that you start looking for even more.

So as far as I'm concerned, I'm going to tell you the truth as a seven-day Adventist, a teacher of God's Word, as well as a student of God's Word.

I firmly believe that we are right at the brink of a most tremendous crisis that is getting ready to take this world, even this church, as an overwhelming surprise.

Understanding how close we are to the crisis alone is not gonna get a single soul ready for the second coming of Jesus Christ or for that crisis.

In other words, as we gain the knowledge of prophecy, there's an experience that's supposed to be connected to that knowledge that makes us ready for the prophetic events.

I want you to turn your Bibles to the book of 2 Peter chapter 1.

We're gonna look at this and then after we look at this, then we're gonna have a word of prayer as we go deeper into our studies today.

Now in 2 Peter chapter 1 you find what I would say is perhaps the highest reason for Bible prophecy, right?

We're told in the book Evangelism 196 that ministers should present the sure word of prophecy and present the prophecies of Daniel and Revelation as the foundation of the faith of Seventh-day Adventists.

And therefore we should teach it in connection with the words, Behold the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world.

We are not just another denomination to hang on the wall of Christendom.

But what is the purpose of prophecy then?

Notice what the Bible says as we consider 2 Peter.

We're going to look at chapter 1 and we're going to read just verse 19.

The key reason, the chief reason of why God gives us prophecy.

Father in heaven, as we consider this simple point from your word, Give us understanding, we pray, for we ask it in Jesus' name, amen.

Sure word of prophecy that we would do well to take heed unto it as unto a what?

Light that shineth in a dark place until something happens.

The great purpose of prophecy is so that it may cause the day to dawn and the day star to arise in our hearts.

Now go to Revelation 22 verse 16 very quickly so we can just identify who is this day star and some of your translations say morning star.

Let's notice what the Bible says who's this day slash morning star is that will arise in our hearts as a result of understanding prophecy.

Here's what the Bible says, Revelation 22 and verse 16.

The Bible says, I, Jesus, have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches.

I am the root and the offspring of David and the what?

So the purpose of prophecy is to make us aware of where we are in time so that we will step fast to make sure that we are secure in Jesus as that day star.

Christ must be within us, the hope of glory.

It is possible from the pastor to the pew that an individual can understand and break down prophecy and still not reflect the lovely image of Jesus.

It is possible that someone can dot the I's, cross the T's, understands the dates, the times, and charts, and the list goes on, and at the end of the day miss the whole point.

Christ is not formed within the hope of glory.

And brothers and sisters I'm telling you for some people the way they're studying prophecy right now all they did was go from being an ignorant sinner to an intelligent sinner.

And both ignorant and intelligent sinners are going into the same lake.

So we have to desire something more than knowledge and information.

You see a lot of people who love to always find out the newest, the latest, the most startling things, but they won't even live up to the light that they learned years ago.

And the Bible says we are to walk in the light as Christ is in the light.

So this is why I believe we need to scale back to the point that it's not so much just a seeking out of new and startling things, but Lord help me understand prophecy in such a way that I can have an experience with Jesus connected to my prophetic understandings and may Christ arise within our hearts.

And that's why our focus is not going to be the technical information of the 3 angels' messages.

I believe that there are plenty of messages like that on AudioVerse.

I believe there are plenty of messages like that on various websites.

I believe that there are many individuals in the Seventh-day Adventist Church who understand more of the theory of the 3 angels than the experience.

And when you understand that time is almost finished, then brothers and sisters, you and I must understand what we need to do is get the experience connected to the theory so it can go from the head to the heart.

This is the assignment that I've been giving to you over these next few presentations.

So as we prepare to receive from Jesus, how can I enter into the experience of the first, the second, and the third angel's message?

The Sanctuary and the Holy Spirit, Part 2

You know, many times when I have studied the sanctuary in times past, even though it's fascinating to me, but because it was presented almost like trivial pursuit, you know, this, the hook means this, and that means that, And that's all fascinating, but it didn't help me with my walk with Christ.

And so what I hope to do here is to connect some of these things with that relationship.

Now obviously we're not going to be able to exhaust that in this 6 part series.

Do you know what we're going to be studying for all eternity?

And so I hope today will at least launch us out and give us a good head start.

But once again, I hope you don't mind, I like kneeling before the Master.

Let's kneel before Him as we begin this hour together.

Lord, I want to thank you again for whetting our appetites and beginning that process of giving us a deeper understanding and appreciation for this model you have given to us, this illustration of how you plan to deal with sin and save sinners.

And so Father I pray that as we enter into this next segment I once again confess my need of you.

Please Lord bring to my mind what you want me to say.

There's so much I could say, there's not enough time to say it.

So give to me the illustrations and the words.

Father, you know the life of each person here and the secret struggle in their life.

And so I pray you'll bring something out especially for them to encourage and strengthen them and reveal your love to them through this presentation.

Thank you Lord and I ask this in Christ's name.

1 of the things that I hope to accomplish in this presentation is to just kind of bring you up to speed and lay a framework for the preceding studies, the studies that are about to follow.

But I couldn't think of a more practical way of doing it than by showing you the sanctuary as a model for prayer.

And the sanctuary teaches us how to pray and what to pray for.

Now the sanctuary, as I mentioned, was given to the Lord.

Let me stand over here so you can see this better.

But the sanctuary was given to the children of Israel as a kindergarten to understand how God was going to deal with sin and save them.

And the whole idea was to bring them to a faith relationship with Jesus through this system.

Did you know that Israel was supposed to operate by faith?

Open your Bibles with me real quick and let's take a look at Hebrews chapter 11.

And we know this chapter to be the faith chapter.

And by the way you'll notice that they're all Old Testament characters in Hebrews chapter 11.

So the people in the Old Testament were saved by faith.

But I wanted to just share with you verse 4 which I think is very significant in what I am saying here.

Verse 4 says, By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous.

His righteousness was by faith, but it was revealed through works.

But his righteousness was by faith, God testifying of his gift and through it he being dead still speaks.

Ok now watch this, he didn't offer God, It doesn't say here that by works Abel offered a sheep.

It said by faith he offered a more excellent sacrifice.

What was the more excellent sacrifice that he brought by faith?

He brought the Lamb of God, which takes away the sin of the world.

Abel came to understand that the death of the sheep was not going to save him, but that that sheep pointed to 1 who would.

Abel came to faith and so Israel was to come to faith, a faith relationship with God and so the sanctuary was to lead them to that.

Today the sanctuary points to us to what God has done, to what God is doing, and to what God is about to do.

And so what we're going to do is a very practical approach and in the sanctuary prayer 1 of the benefits of the sanctuary prayer is that it keeps before us present truth.

The other thing that helps me in the sanctuary prayer is to keep my attention.

How many of you find yourself in the middle of prayer working on your grocery list?

Find your mind wandering off and then you can't remember where you were or even falling asleep.

Well, praying through the sanctuary has helped me to keep my focus.

You know, Ellen White tells us how important it is for us to reign in our minds and not to let it wander off here and the other.

And the sanctuary, praying to the sanctuary is 1 of the ways that helps me to maintain my focus when I'm praying to God.

The sanctuary also teaches me how to approach God and we'll go through that together.

But 1 thing I do want to say is that you don't have to pray through the sanctuary for God to listen to you.

Well, I'm not teaching here that this is the only way or even the best way to pray.

You know there are models in the Bible for prayer.

You read in Daniel 9 about Daniel's prayer and if you were to compare the sanctuary elements With the prayer of Jesus and the prayer of Daniel, you will find similar elements that are to be found within prayer.

What we're talking about is the science of prayer.

Alright, let me hand out to you, I'm handing you my prayer, my study.

We're going to have some imagery up here and text, but I decided to make a copy of my talk as well so that you can make notes and maybe share with others if you wanted to do so, or even give the sermon yourself when you got home.
