Well, this morning I'm going to ask this simple question.

In fact, that's why people oftentimes like to hire what kind of a person?

Will you be here on the weekend when I can't be?

For all young men that ask the pretty lady, would you like to go get something to eat later this week?

You ask a neighbor, Hey, could I borrow that tool?

I have a special project that I'm working on.

Can you get the stain out of this carpet?

Well today we're continuing our series, David, a man after God's own heart.

And so to begin, I invite you to open your Bibles.

We're just gonna jump right into the story this morning.

We're in 2 Samuel and we're in chapter 7 this morning.

We're just going to pick up right where we left off.

You'll recall in chapter 6 the ark is brought to Jerusalem.

Going back in chapter 5 the Philistines are defeated.

There's good things happening in Jerusalem and so we read in chapter 7 of 2nd Samuel verse 1, Now it came to pass when the king was dwelling in his house and the Lord had given him rest from all of his enemies all around.

That the king said to Nathan the prophet, see now I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells inside tent curtains." Now you may recall 1 of the kings around sent all the supplies for David, it was a nice gesture, built him this beautiful palace with artisans that didn't even fully exist within God's people but they are sent And so David has this beautiful place in which to dwell.

The ark has come back to Jerusalem, but the ark dwells in a tent.

It's interesting when we find David in this position, if you will, peering out of his beautiful palace, how different the thoughts of David from that of the thoughts of Nebuchadnezzar in a similar situation.

We don't see David saying, ah, look at this beautiful Jerusalem that I have built.

He's saying something about this just doesn't feel right.

There's something wrong With this picture.

I don't feel comfortable being in a palace when my God is dwelling in a tent.

He felt like he was giving God second place.

And so, verse 3, he apparently tells all these things to Nathan in verse 3, then Nathan said to the king, go do all that is in your heart for the Lord is with you.

Yes, build a temple, do what you want to do.

I can't imagine too many pastors who wouldn't.

I mean, there's a prophet, not a pastor, but I can't imagine too many pastors when somebody came and said, hey, I have an idea to beautify the sanctuary.

In fact, I want to do everything within my power.

I imagine most would say, that sounds like a great idea.

You could have spent it on yourself and many other ways, but you're choosing to beautify God's house.

But then we continue verse 4, but it happened that night that the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying, Go and tell my servant David.

Thus says the Lord, Would you build a house for me to dwell in?

For I have not dwelt in a house since the time that I brought the children of Israel up from Egypt.

Now before we get into this message I need to back up a little bit because it's a small point I suppose but it's a point nonetheless.

It happened that night that the Word of the Lord came to who?

To Nathan and Nathan is the prophet of God.

Now we could say that God could have simply gone to David directly couldn't he?

But rather he chose to send it via his prophet, Nathan.

I don't presume to know all the reasons why God does what he does, but I would suppose that he wants to honor his prophets and to preserve in David a regard for his prophets that this is how we function, this is how we work, this is how I communicate through my prophets of what I would have you to do or not do.

And so before we get into the message of the prophet, I simply want to ask, do we listen to God's prophets today?

I think of this verse, 2 Chronicles 20, verse 20, if you wanna have 20-20 vision.

It says, believe in the Lord your God and you shall be established.

Believe his prophets and you shall prosper.

I was talking to a friend late into the night this week and he was speaking to me of a relatively recent experience where he was visiting an Adventist church and he was looking and just happened to be in this Sabbath school class.

And in that Sabbath school class, they were discussing the 2300 days of Bible prophecy that culminated in 1844.

And it was being discussed from the leader up front by simply saying we don't have any idea what really happened in 1844.

And then they would continue on, that Jesus didn't in fact go into the most holy place in 1844, but rather at his ascension, he went directly into the most holy place.

Now without launching into all of this, friends, this directly contradicts everything we know about the Old Testament sanctuary service, this model that God gave us.

Why would God give us a model of salvation with all kinds of types and symbols and then do it differently with Jesus when he came?

And the idea that Jesus began his day of atonement ministry in AD 31 rather than 1844 is just not supported by scripture or spirit of prophecy.

And so we could, if we wanted to take the time, look at the dozens and dozens of scriptures throughout and have a thorough Bible study, we could refute this idea, but there's also very plain statements in the spirit of prophecy against this idea.

Great Controversy 422 says, at the termination of the 2, 300 days in 1844, Christ then entered the most holy place of the heavenly sanctuary to perform the closing work of atonement, preparatory of his coming." End quote.

But in this Sabbath school class was a prominent church leader from 1 of our higher schools of learning in the Southern Union.

If I told you his name, you all would know exactly who I'm talking about.

And he was supporting this idea and saying, yes, you are correct.
