Open at Pinehurst Resort here in North Carolina, just some 4 hours from here, Stewart made a memory 15-foot Putt, defeating Phil Nicholson by a stroke in the final round.

Open win and third major championship win.

Many were saying he was the best player that the United States had.

Just 4 months later, Payne Stewart was on a Lear 35 with 5 other people.

Took off from Orlando, Florida at 9.20 in the morning, headed for Houston, Texas.

Not long after takeoff, it veered off course and radio contact was lost.

And when the crew continued to fail to respond from repeated inquiries from the air traffic controllers, an Air Force fighter jet from Tyndale, Florida, doing some routine flight training, decided to check in on this Learjet.

And as they got close enough and approached near the sides of this aircraft, they noticed something rather chilling.

The inside of the airplane windows were covered with frost, indicating that the temperature in the plane was in fact below freezing.

And some of the time it was even cruising at 40, 000 feet.

And at that altitude, if the cabin pressure is compromised, it can suck all the oxygen out of the plane, I've been told, in just 20 seconds.

More insidious is a slow leak, which causes hypoxia, or simply slow lack of oxygen, which can incapacitate everyone gradually.

And so it was about 4 hours after takeoff, the plane, flying, crashed in a grassy field 3 kilometers west of Mina, South Dakota.

But to the uninformed, looking upward at this ghostly flight as it was still being carried by autopilot, everything seemed just fine.

In fact, somebody could have looked up at this Learjet and said, oh, those lucky guys, wouldn't that be nice?

I mean, talk about the ultimate luxury, right?

Every external sign would suggest a straight and true course but there was something drastically wrong inside.

And it was only a matter of time before the plane would run out of fuel and crash.

Every external sign suggests a straight and true course, but perhaps there is an internal problem, something we are harboring, an area of compromise, and perhaps it's sucking out the spiritual oxygen and leaving us drowsy, poor in judgment.

And if left unattended, it causes 1 to become morally and spiritually impaired and 1 failure leads to another and yet another and if not corrected, we will die and then crash.

We're continuing our story and series on David, a man after God's own heart.

And we've seen David face Goliath, the giant, to claim promises of God and to vindicate God's character.

We've also seen David drift off course and do some things he shouldn't.

And today's piece, part 10, we're calling lying appearances.

Because David himself will still try to appear that he's taking the straight and true course, but well, he turns out to be a liar.

If you recall, well, we didn't actually study this, we're skipping past some of these stories.

In 1 Samuel 24, I guess that's where we did leave off, it's where David cuts off a piece of Saul's garment.

He could have taken his life, he could have ended this saga, but rather he doesn't want to lift his hand against the Lord's anointed.

In 1 Samuel 25, David asks very wealthy Nabal, we didn't study this story, for provisions for his men.

They're tired of being on the run, they're hungry, there's lots of them to feed.

And they had protected Nabal's flocks and herds.

And so he thought, now is the shearing time, now is when they're gathering in all the spoil, if you will, I'm gonna go ask for some provisions, and instead, Nabal is rude and harsh and offensive, and David loses his cool and vows to kill Nabal and his men, yet it's Nabal's wife, Abigail, who hears of all of this, rushes with provisions and saves the day.

Had she not done that, David had already vowed all of these men will die.

When Nabal hears about this, he's drunk, wakes up the next morning, she describes it to him essentially as a heart attack and dies.

And then David takes Abigail as his wife.

And you might be saying, but doesn't David already have a wife?

Saul married her off to another, but there's Yet another, Ahinoam.

She's mentioned in verse 43 of this chapter.

And so this compromise is essentially setting David himself up for a greater failure in that same department later on down the road.

A similar situation happens in chapter 26.

David sneaks into the camp with Abishai through all the sleeping soldiers.

David knows the drill, he knows how everybody sleeps and where they stay, and he's sure enough, they find Saul asleep with a spear by his head, and Abishai is waiting to take Saul out.

But David says no, We won't raise our hand against the Lord's anointing.

And they take the spear, they take the water jug, they get to a safe vantage point, they yell and Saul is spared the second time and relents from pursuing David.

He's following God, then he wants to kill everybody that's against him, and then he's not gonna raise his hand again, and back and forth.

And by the time we get to this chapter, and here's where I wanna look this morning, we're in 1 Samuel, chapter 27, David is exhausted And he's worn out.

So let's read those first 2 verses 1st Samuel chapter 27 beginning verse 1 and David said in his heart Where in his heart it didn't say this is what God told David to do He's following that mantra follow your heart and David said in his heart now I shall perish someday by the hand of Saul.

And so he says in his heart, now I shall perish someday by the hand of Saul.

There is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape to the land of the Philistines." Who are the Philistines?

And Saul will despair of me to seek me anymore in any part of Israel, so I shall escape out of his hand.

I will hide with the enemy, there I will be safe.

Friends, is it ever safe to hide with the enemy?

And in verse 2 we read, then David arose and went over.

Some versions will read crossed over and this is significant in the Hebrew.

He went over, he crossed over with the 600 men who were with him to Achish the son of Moak, the king of Gath.

And so this Hebrew word for went over implies crossing a boundary.

Whether a physical boundary such as a river or a valley or something of that nature, It could be a political boundary with the nation's borders.

It could even be a moral boundary as to enter a covenant or transgress a commandment.

But it signals the type of thing that changes everything going forward.

David crossed a line and it marks a major point of transition and this is David's attempt to find asylum among the enemy.

They're fearful, they're frustrated and exhausted.

And you can just hear his spiraling mood in verse 1.

1 of these days I will be destroyed by the hand of Saul.
