In 1 of our devotionals that we like to read, it's written by Eric B.

Hare, it's a junior devotional, we like it because it has all kinds of good stories.

Hare, I imagine the story is decades old, but he tells a story about 1 of our colleges, and it's coming on to winter, there's a pond nearby the college, and so they're watching, watching, watching to see when it is safe to ice skate.

And the time finally comes that the administrators all feel yes, we can safely ice skate on this pond except there is a portion of the pond that is still not safe.

For whatever reason, that had not frozen over yet, but they decided, we can set this up in such a way we'll put flares, if they don't go past the flares, everything will be just fine.

And So, the president of the college made sure everybody knew, this Saturday night, if you wanna go ice skating, come to the gym after sunset, and we'll all gather together, and we'll go out, and we'll have this wonderful time, ice skating, but there will be flares.

If you go past the flares, you are jeopardizing your future ability to go skating with us next time.

And the students are back there, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Then the dean later reiterated, as they were in the gymnasium, now before we go out, you can eat from any, you can skate on any part of the, but not past the flares.

So they went out, it was a Saturday night, the moon was full, there was some snow on the ground, and they were skating and having a wonderful time until after 2 hours in, they heard this shrill call, help, help, help, somebody help.

They'd gone past the flares and had fallen in and this girl was desperate for help and so they worked and struggled to get her out safely.

The fellow that was probably showing out for her was further out and they worked and worked to bring him in.

After much effort, they couldn't revive him.

And then somebody else said, my 2 roommates or suite mates, 1 of the 2, they're missing.

And they looked and they looked and they called the dorm.

And so they searched and sure enough, they found their bodies as well.

3 individuals, college young people, passed away for a senseless reason, really, of just passing the flares.

Were they careless to obey the guidelines clearly set forth?

And so today we're looking at a story again in the life of David and I've entitled it, But God Knows My Heart.

If you brought your Bibles we're in 2 Samuel.

2 Samuel chapter 6 is where we are today and this particular chapter includes an individual named Uzzah.

So you might remember and know where this is going but there's so much misinformation truly that can come out of this chapter and we really wanna see what it has to say.

And so we're in 2 Samuel 6, verse 1, and it says, again, David gathered all the choice men of Israel.

These are those that are of high significance, but notice their number, 30, 000 of them.

And David arose and went with all the people who were with him from Baal, Judah, to bring up from there the Ark of God, whose name is called by the name the Lord of Hosts, who dwells between the cherubim.

Now this was about 9 miles, if you will, northwest of Jerusalem.

And it would be well for us to pause and really think about the Ark of God.

Essentially all of David's lifetime it's sitting there.

It was taken at 1 point by the Philistines and after many plagues falling on them, similar to that of the plagues that fell on Egypt.

They returned the ark, but for Saul's period, if you will, his time as king, the ark really doesn't get much spoken of at all.

There's 1 brief mention, but here the ark has sat.

1 Chronicles 13 verse 3 says, "'Let us bring the ark of our God back to us, "'for we did not inquire of it during the reign of Saul.'" We didn't inquire of it, We didn't give it its proper place.

In fact, you remember pictures like this from the former days.

But for a long time now, it's been relegated to the side, neglected.

And you could even make a case that the young people in Israel were probably asking mom and dad, what is the ark of God?

And so it makes sense that David wants to restore this not only beautiful symbol, but the presence of God in Jerusalem to be a leader, not just, I don't know, not just leadership as a king, but a spiritual leader.

And so, verse 3, we read, so they set the ark of God on a new cart and brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill.

And Uzzah and Eho, the sons of Abinadab, drove the new cart.

Now when the Philistines returned the ark, they did the same.

They put it on a cart and they sent it back.

They didn't know about the ark, they didn't know truly about its significance.

We just know this is a bad omen for us, so we're sending it back.

But friends, with God's people, it was different.

Do you remember as a child seeing the ark be carried through the Red Sea?

Do you remember seeing the ark being put in a cart and pulled through the Red Sea?

So Moses took the carts and the oxen and gave them to the Levites.

2 carts and 4 oxen he gave to the sons of Gershon, according to their service.

And 4 carts and 8 oxen he gave to the sons of Merari, according to their service, under the authority of Ethimar, the son of Aaron the priest.

Verse 9, but to the sons of Kohath he gave none, No carts, no oxen, because theirs was the service of the holy things which they carried on their shoulders.

And in Numbers chapter 4, verse 5, it says, when the camp prepared to journey, Aaron and his sons shall come, and they shall take down the covering veil and cover the ark of the testimony with it.

There's all of these directives of how we are to transport something holy, how we are to take it apart, how we are to carry it.

And continuing there, skipping down to verse 15 in Numbers chapter 4, we read, And when Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sanctuary and all the furnishings of the sanctuary, when the camp is set to go, then the sons of Kohath shall come to carry them, but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they, what, die.

Now the keepers of the ark for the last 30 years should know this, shouldn't they?

Abinadab and his sons or descendants should understand these things very clearly, shouldn't they?

In fact, really all of Israel should understand this very clearly.

You know, there's a reason that we come to church regularly.

There's a reason that we come to prayer meetings.

There's a reason that we study our Bibles regularly, there's a reason for that because otherwise we tend to forget those things that are of importance.

And we start to treat things that are spiritual, well, more casually.

And so we can do our worldly thing and we can still have God, but we just tuck him in our pocket and he is not given his proper place.

And so we continue our story, verse 4, and they brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill, accompanying the ark of God.

And then David and all the house of Israel played music before the Lord, and all kinds of instruments of firwood on harps and stringed instruments, on tambourines, on cistrums, and on cymbals.

Verse 6, and when they came to Nachan's threshing floor, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled.
