Simple Steps to a Better Health

In 1962, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev and Cuban leader Fidel Castro began preparing to locate Soviet missiles in Cuba, just 100 miles from American soil.

That moment in history, the closest the Cold War came to nuclear war, became known as the Cuban Missile Crisis.

We're going to look together at a modern day crisis, a global crisis really, 0 exaggeration.

And it's a crisis that's affecting you and many of the people you know.

Thankfully, there's something you can do about it.

Now, let's start by looking at God's will for your life.

3 John verse 2, Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.

God's will is that you experience good health, physically and spiritually.

Jesus said in John 10 verse 10, I am come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly.

The Bible says, "...you are the temple of God, and the Spirit of God dwells in you." 3 chapters later, "...you were bought at a price.

Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's." This is important, yet we are a long way from where God wants us to be.

The reality is that in the Western world, standards of health are plummeting, and it doesn't need to be that way.

Many people are suffering from conditions and diseases right now that they don't need to be suffering from, conditions which in many cases can be reversed.

Even though the United States spends far more on health care than any other developed country in the world, health outcomes across the board are not good.

In 2023, life expectancy declined to the lowest it's been in 20 years.

1 expert from Harvard University said, The numbers are shocking, but I want you to know there is something you can do about it.

It was found in 2018 that more than half of American adults had at least 1 chronic health condition – arthritis, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and so on.

More than a quarter have multiple chronic conditions.

Close to half of all American children are dealing with a chronic health issue.

Now, you can have these conditions through no fault of your own.

Sometimes there's nothing you can do about it.

And this is not just a physical matter, but a spiritual matter also.

In the book of Daniel, Daniel and his friends chose to honor God with their health, and as a result, they prospered spiritually.

I don't want to oversimplify, but let's connect some dots.

Ultra-processed foods were the source of 67% of the calories in kids' and teens' diets in 2018.

The diet of kids is usually high in fat, added sugars, and salt, and they often contain additives like colorings, flavorings, emulsifiers, or hydrogenated oils used to transform the texture, looks, and flavor of food.

Are getting the majority of their calories from ultra-processed foods like microwavable meals, packaged snacks, chips, cookies, candies, soda, canned soups, and prepared foods like pizza, hot dogs, burgers, and chicken nuggets.

At the same time, the consumption of unprocessed or minimally processed foods is decreasing.

Reports in July of 2024 stated that eating higher levels of ultra-processed food may shorten lifespans by more than 10 percent.

An investigator at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland said, "...diet soft drinks were the key contributor to ultra-processed food consumption.

Sit your kid down to a bowl of many breakfast cereals, and in some cases, your child is getting more than 5 teaspoons of sugar in the cereal alone, which is disastrous.

The human body wasn't made to deal with such massive amounts of sugar.

A professor of cardiovascular medicine in London, England, said, "...children quickly become used to the taste of high-sugar cereals and find healthier ones less palatable, which has long-term implications on their health.

Eating too much sugar leads to weight gain, raising the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.

A typical child's diet today is nearly 70% processed foods, And that trend is growing.

1 headline said, if you think kids are eating mostly junk food, a new study finds you are right.

No 1 wants the manufacture of sweet treats to disappear entirely.

Problem is, many people don't make the connection between their taste buds and their poor health.

2 of the major challenges we're facing today are diabetes and obesity, and the 2 are linked.

The CDC says that 74% of adults 20 or older are overweight or obese.

Adults have severe obesity and that more than 40% of children are overweight or obese.

The numbers on diabetes are astonishing, but remember, I'm going to tell you there is something you can do about it.

Type 2 diabetes is when your blood sugar is too high.

Your pancreas makes insulin, which is what helps glucose get into your cells to be used as energy.

If that process doesn't work right, glucose stays in your blood and doesn't reach your cells.

Diabetes raises the risk for damage to your eyes, kidneys, nerves, and heart.

And many people with diabetes have no idea they have it.

It's the eighth leading cause of death in the United States.

And diagnosed diabetes costs $413 billion a year as of 2022, Up $80 billion in the last 10 years.

1 out of every $4 spent on health care is spent on diabetes.

It's the most expensive chronic condition in the United States.

Type 1 diabetes is where the pancreas makes little or no insulin.

Only 5 to 10 percent of people with diabetes have insulin-dependent diabetes.

But type 2 diabetes, which can be controlled, can even be reversed.

Identify the causes, and you may be able to reduce or stop the problem.
