The Solution to the Health Care Crisis

In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth.

There were no doctors in the Garden of Eden.

There were no prescription drugs, no medications of any kind.

There weren't any supplements, they were not needed.

The undertakers, funeral parlors, out of business, no need, because when God created His first children, Adam and Eve, no sickness at all.

Well, Isaiah wrote in the book of Isaiah that we are going to a place where and he said, the inhabitant thereof shall not say, I am sick.

And when we read in the third John, the little book of third John, verse 2, we read these words, Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health just as your soul prospers.

That was John's wish for his readers, it's God's wish for us today.

Healthcare costs blowing out budgets of entire nations.

People not sure what to do about diseases they don't know how to fight.

To discuss this with me is cardiologist Dr.

James Markham, who practices here in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

And unfortunately, my whole life, the last 27 years in practicing cardiology and medicine, I see people that are suffering with diseases of all sorts.

So from a physician's point of view, how bad is it?

Over the last 20, 30 years, the rates of heart disease keep going up.

In fact, it's been estimated in the United States by mid-century, 1 in 3 people will have type 2 diabetes.

The risk of joint problems go up, high blood pressure keeps going up, every year more and more chronic diseases, cancer rates keep going up, mental health problems keep going up, all of these chronic diseases keep increasing and you ask yourself is modern medicine fixing these problems?

Now this was not God's plan in the beginning.

God created perfect people with perfect health.

So over the last 6, 000 years, something has gone wrong.

And you ask the question, modern medicine, is it fixing?

You might even ask the question, is in some ways it harming?

God created Adam and Eve, sin entered the picture.

From then till now, it's been down, down, down in terms of our health.

You go back a few years, people were shorter, people weren't as healthy, people didn't live as long.

With the improvements that we've had, and I think they're observable in the last, I don't know what, call it 50, 100 years or so, why are things still as bad as they are?

When are the doctors and the scientists gonna figure out what the magic bullet is for heart disease or diabetes or cancer or stroke?

Yeah, well, the more I learn, the less I know.

You know, we think of the trillion cells in our brain, the quadrillion connections.

We know very little about the brain and how the brain is affecting our whole body and how it turns on and off genes or genetics.

We know very little about the bowel, the flora in our bowel, all sorts of bacteria.

There's more activity in our bowels that affects our entire body, including our cardiovascular health.

Then our immune systems, which fights off these bad boys.

We're just now discovering all things about our immune system that we never knew before.

So as time goes on, things get more complicated, and yet we did make some major advances, especially, you know, antibiotics, blood transfusions.

So we've had made some processes, but over the years we've gotten these chronic diseases, these lifestyle diseases, the diseases that we put on ourselves that we weren't made designed to have all these stressors on our body, which has caused aging and mutations and all sorts of bad things to happen.

Okay, so this question is not meant to skewer the medical system.

You're a physician, a very well-educated physician operating at a very high level, so I don't mean to come after the medical profession.

This is, we're well into the 21st century now, and it just seems like things are getting worse.

So, what are the successes, the failings, and the limitations of modern medicine?

Yeah, well modern medicine is great at treating acute problems.

You know, if I'm having a heart attack, I want to have a stent.

If my heart's going slow, give me a pacemaker.

If I'm bleeding to death, stop the bleeding, give me a blood transfusion.

It's also improving at treating chronic genetic problems.

Let's say you were born with a gene that's bad.

Well, we're now studying the genes and we're finding ways that we can do things to help the genes, maybe not express these things that would cause problems down the road.

But where we haven't made much inroads at all is our lifestyles, The things that we're doing that's changing our very genes, that's accelerating aging, that's causing all this chronic disease.

And unfortunately, we're looking more towards what we can do.

We're not looking towards the real answers to this complicated system, and that's looking at a creator.

And I tell people, John, that when you're looking at modern medicine, there's ditches that we fall in.

You know, there's the ditches of thinking that modern medicine can fix everything.

There's another ditch on the other side of the road that says lifestyle.

And that modern medicine can't really fix anything.

Right, and the true path is us to understand that when we're sick, which we all are Genetically, we need a savior that can rescue us from this bad genetics that we've come on.

Now let's get into this more after the break, but before the break, let me ask you this.

So I think what you've identified is that medicine is doing its best.

In some areas, medicine is doing wonderfully, wonderfully.

But medicine is up against something that it seems it can't overcome.

That's not so much disease but the lifestyle of the patient.

You can't give anything away, I know, but you'd see patients that you know full well, if only they did A, B, and C real simple, their lives would trend up, but they just won't do it.

So lifestyle is a major component of turning this disease thing around, correct?
