How To Get Ready for the Second Coming

So good to see you all here this morning.

I'm very glad you're here in God's house and it's a privilege to share from you from the Bible and to talk about spiritual things.

So some of you just coming in, feel free to come down and get a seat.

My name is David Beal, and I'm a third year medical student here at Loma Linda.

Just finished psychiatry rotation this week, it's a blessing.

And so this is, now that we have a little weekend off, I'm glad to be here to study from God's word.

Especially, this was a meaningful subject for me to research for myself, because I had some questions on our subject this morning that had never been fully answered in my own mind.

We're gonna talk this morning about how to get ready for Jesus to come back.

You think that's an important topic to talk about?

I want it to be a practical study, and I hope that you find things that are a blessing and useful for you in your own preparation for Jesus to come.

There were unanswered questions in my mind, and we will get to those soon, but a lot of it's fairly straightforward, and I hope you get a blessing.

So let's ask for the Lord's Spirit to speak to our hearts as we study his word.

Dear God, we just want to say thank you so much for your love and mercy to us, for giving Jesus, who came all the way from heaven and spent years of life on earth in an inconvenient and difficult position, and then to die to pay the price for all our mistakes.

We just want to thank you for his sacrifice, for his support from heaven, for the gift of the Holy Spirit, who you said that will guide us into all truth, but we know that you don't force yourself on us.

And so we want you to know that you're welcome here and we're asking for your guidance.

Speak to our hearts as we study from your word and give us strength in our hearts.

Give us love for you that will enable us to love the people around us and to prepare for your return.

Thank you so much for your compassion, amen.

OSCE is an objective, structured clinical examination and medical students get them regularly.

There are a number of ways that we're tested in order to see if we're learning the things that we need to know to become a good doctor.

You think it's important for medical students to get tested?

Yes, okay, so it's hard sometimes, but it is important.

And there is book knowledge, and then there's practical knowledge.

And an OSCE is when you go into a room and they have it set up in this building and someone pretends to be a patient and they pretend to be sick.

And then you interview them just like you would a patient who was truly sick and you find out what's wrong and you suggest a plan and you were graded on how well you do.

So I just had my psych OSCE and I was intimidating because I find OSCEs difficult.

It's just not something I was used to and I was concerned about it.

And I was grateful that at the time I was working with residents in the hospital.

Resident is someone who has already gotten their MD and they're in training to become a fully specialized physician.

And so I was working with these residents, and they are the ones who have given this OSCE before.

They have pretended to be the person who's sick.

When you have psych, you don't actually have people who are depressed.

You have someone, a resident, who comes in and pretends like that.

So these are the people who have given the test before.

And so, I mentioned I was going to take it and said, OK, here's what you need to know.

And it was really helpful to hear it from them, because they're the ones who give the test every year.

I appreciate the advice that I get from fellow students, but the advice from someone who has given it is golden.

And this, the rotation I was also on was consult in the hospital, and it's a hard psych rotation.

But the experience we got and the advice from them made it, I think it was the best OSCE I've had, which, maybe you wonder, well, how were the previous ones?

But it went really well because I got the advice I needed to know on how to prepare.

So there is an OSCE coming for every 1 of us.

Before the second coming, God has set up something that is essentially an OSCE.

And he has told us in his word how to prepare.

You'll find out as we go farther this morning why I say it's an OSCE, and the elements that make it different and then what you would usually think of as a test.

And most importantly, God has told us how to get ready.

And so we'll be studying the passages of scripture that go over what to prepare.

Since God has given the test, isn't he the best person to ask how to get ready?

So it's and he's given us that instruction in his word.

So we're going to look at those passages and I'd like to invite you to consider in your own minds as we study this morning, am I getting ready for the second coming of Jesus?

Am I following these instructions that God has given in His Word?

You know there are a lot of ways that people try to get ready for Jesus to come.

When you hear about getting ready for the second coming, people have some interesting ideas.

Some people move to the wilderness, way out in the middle of Montana, or British Columbia, or somewhere, in order to get ready to hole up for Armageddon and get ready for the second coming.

You know, there are members of our own faith, there are Adventists, who are dear hearted and they want to escape the temptations of the world, and there's validity in that.

The country can be a much better place to raise children and to have a better spiritual environment than living in a big city.

But that's not the only, and really, it's not the most important step in getting ready for Jesus to come back.

You know some people stockpile food and even weapons getting ready for the second coming, but the Bible has told us in Isaiah 33 16 that our bread will be given to us and our water will be sure.

And it even, yeah, so you look, if you look at that, that whole study in Isaiah 33 is talking about the day of God.

Says, who among us shall dwell with everlasting fire?

Who among us will dwell with everlasting burning?

We are going to have a lot of passages of Scripture.

When I was doing this study, there was more than I could comfortably fit in to 1 message, and I don't want to keep you for an hour or longer.

We would rather split it up into more times.

So I will give you some that I would encourage you to jot down and look at this afternoon, and there will be some key ones that we need to focus on now, okay?

Now, I do believe, just a side note, that there is wisdom in not being dependent on a weekly trip to the grocery store.

Not simply for the second coming's sake, but we're expecting a big 1 in California, right?

There in the southeast we have hurricanes and tornadoes and there are times when you should be prepared to not have to go to to the grocery store every other day.

We are quite dependent on things that we could, we ought not to be that dependent on.

But God has not put forward stockpiling food as the big preparation for the second coming.

And People say, well, I can't, you know, not be able to buy and sell, I need some gold and silver.

Well, it may not be a good financial investment, number 1, but there's lots of scripture that says, do not put your confidence in gold and silver.

You can see that in Job, and there's a bunch of other places.

Some people say, well, you know what, if I can just get my solar panels up, I'll be ready for the time of trouble.

I'll have my air conditioning or light at night or whatever.

I'll have my hydroelectric going in my outpost way in the woods, or I'll have natural gas or whatever.

I understand what people are thinking, and I understand the interest for energy independence.
