With my travels this summer, we have not been up to speed on where we are in Hebrews, so I'm going to try to give us a bird's eye view of what we have studied so far.

So, Hebrews 1, we discussed that God still speaks to you and me.

And Jesus is the key, he's the creator and the sustainer, he is not made, he is the express image of God.

He is the Redeemer, He is the King and the Eternal Lord, the Inheritor of all things.

Due to the controversy at the time, Paul had to make it clear that Jesus was superior to the angels in Hebrews 1.

Then we moved on to Hebrews 2 and we talked about aid to the tempted.

There is extreme danger in neglecting the salvation that we've all been offered.

There is extreme danger in neglecting that salvation.

Jesus was willing to endure humiliation for you.

Christ was first introduced in Hebrews 2 as our high priest, and the path of Christ was forged for us, that we had a path to salvation.

Then Hebrews 3, It's about being a partaker of Christ.

He had to, once again, they brought Moses way up on a pedestal because most of the Bible at the time was from Moses, and he had to remind them that Jesus is greater than Moses.

He asked that we don't harden our hearts, that we exhort each other daily, that we bring each other up, And we must hold fast in faith until the end.

Then our last message was Hebrews 4, and it was the promise of rest.

That we should strive for rest, and we have a sympathetic high priest.

You know, this thought of, sorry, this thought of rest is almost multifaceted, right?

When we first come into the faith, When we first come into the faith, when we first come into the Adventist church, what is today?

We call it the day of rest, the Sabbath day.

We get this introduction to a day when we take a break from the world, that we have a date time with God.

And then as we build our faith, I've often wondered, and I'm going to highlight 1 of the martyrs here in a minute from my trip, but something that has always amazed me is the martyrs' ability to look to Jesus in martyrdom.

But I believe it comes from where your focus is, where you're highlighted, and that's the promise of rest.

When you put your mind, your eyes to Jesus, a peace comes over us, a peace that passes all understanding, right?

That's our the second point on rest we made, on what rest was, and the last is the final rest.

We get to be in heaven and then on the new earth for all of eternity.

Rest in peace, no more sin, no more death, no more sorrow.

It's obviously pretty old if it's painted, right?

In 1517, he was appointed abbot of the Fern Abbey, Rothschild.

The income from this position paid for him to study at the University of Paris, where he became a Master of Arts in 1520.

It was in Paris where Martin Luther's writings were already exciting much discussion that he first learned the doctrines that he would later uphold.

In night, in 23, he returned to Scotland.

Andrews, the capital of the Catholic Church in Scotland, as his residence.

He became a faculty of arts at the University of St.

Hamilton attained such influence that he was permitted to conduct a solemn high mass based on the music of his own composition at the St.

But the reforming doctrines he had obtained had obtained a firm hold on this young Abbot and he was eager to communicate them to his fellow countrymen.

Early in 1527 he got the attention and not in a good way of the Archbishop of St.

He was directed to the heretical preaching of this young priest, whereupon he ordered that Hamilton should be formally tried.

Hamilton, at this time, he fled to Germany, enrolled himself as a student in a new university.

Among the reformers he met there was William Tyndale.

Late in the autumn of 1527 Hamilton decided he needed to return to his countrymen, and so he returned to Scotland, and he spoke openly of his convictions.

He went first to his brother's house, where he preached frequently in that town, and soon afterwards he renounced clerical, clerical, clerical, celibacy.

And he married a young lady of noble rank.

It's interesting, they don't know who this young lady even was though.

Andrews, avoiding open violence through fear of Hamilton's powerful protectors, invited him to a conference at St.

The young minister, predicting that he was going to die, basically, is quoted as saying, confirm the pious in the true doctrine.

He accepted the invitation, and for nearly a month, he was allowed to preach and debate there at St.

And there's the church there, Amanda and I just got to go.

And that's actually Marlene, that's David Graham I think standing in the middle of my picture accidentally.

At length he was summoned before a council of bishops and clergy that presided over by the Archbishop.

There were 13 charges, 7 based on the doctrines of Martin Luther's scriptural study and teachings.

On examination, Hamilton expressed a belief in their truth and the council sentenced him to death on all 13 charges.

Hamilton was immediately seized and allegedly surrendered based on the assurance he would be restored to his friends without injury.

However, after a debate, the council handed him over to the secular power to be burned at the stake outside the front entrance of St.

The sentence was carried out on the same day to avoid rescue from his powerful allies, including his uncle.

He was burned from noon till 6, and his last words were, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.

There's a spot with his initials on him I'll show you in the next slide pH that is marked today in the cobblestone but there's a sign right next to that.

The initials on the pavement, I'm reading the sign, nearby mark the spot where Patrick Hamilton, member of the university, was burned at the stake on 29th February, 1528, at the age of, does anybody know how old he was?

On the continent he had been greatly influenced by Martin Luther and on his return to St.

Andrews he began to teach Lutheran doctrines.

Having been tried and found guilty of heresy, he was condemned to death, thus becoming the first martyr of the Scottish Reformation." So there's a man deny at that spot.

The main thing it means to the students, I didn't get the sense from talking to a few people as they actually understand what he meant to the Reformation, but the students won't step on the initials during test week because they think it brings them bad luck.

That is the main thing it means to them now.

Hamilton's execution attracted more interest than ever before to Lutheran doctrine and greatly contributed to the Reformation in Scotland.

It is said that the reek of Master Patrick Hamilton infected as many as it blew upon.

Hamilton's fortitude during his execution persuaded Alexander Ailes, who had been appointed to convince Hamilton of his errors, to enter into the Lutheran Church.

His martyrdom is unusual in that he was almost alone in Scotland during the Lutheran stage of the Reformation.

His only known writings are known as Patrick's Places echoed the doctrine of justification by faith.

It's inspiring and as we jump into Hebrews 5 today, I want us to reflect on someone who gave more.

Jesus went through so much more to become our Savior and our High Priest.
