Called to be a Missionary

Lord, we need you at every step of every way.

Not only do I need you, But each person here needs you.

We need you so that all of us can hear what you have to tell us individually.

Bring us from Scripture the message we need through the power of your Spirit.

The God that can go anywhere in the universe, the God that can do anything, anything He wants, what would a God like that, what would bring him the very greatest pleasure?

For the Lord takes pleasure, read it with me, in his people.

And that's why he is here this morning, because he takes pleasure in his people.

A couple weeks ago my wife and I went to the Smoky Mountains.

My son, Philip Jr., and his family came from Colorado.

My youngest daughter, Ruthie, and her family came from Maryland.

My oldest daughter, Rachel, and her family came from Tennessee, and Harry Nelson and his wife came, and Sherry's sister and brother-in-law, the Guthries, came.

We hiked, we had morning and evening worships together, we sang, we visited, we ate, We saw a bear.

United in the way we eat, what we enjoy for amusement and music.

Our family came from the east and from the west, they came from the north and they came from the south.

God's family reunions every Sabbath all over the world.

The Lord your God in your midst, the mighty 1 will save you.

At our family vacation, Rachel and Eric had an unplanned scheduling conflict and couldn't make it for the first couple days.

The reunion wasn't fully right until all the family was together.

It's when we are finally all home together.

And God has given the privilege on earth to invite all of his children to come to the family reunion each Sabbath in preparation for the great reunion.

And he's given us the privilege on earth to invite all of God's children to come to the family reunion each Sabbath in anticipation of that great family, heavenly reunion.

Sing the wondrous love of Jesus, sing his mercy and his grace.

In the mansion bright and blessed, He'll prepare for us a place.

When we all go there to heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be.

When we all, teaching Jesus, we'll sing and shout the victory.

Imagine in heaven a, I don't know, 300 million voice choir.

On this earth families can't always be united.

Marriage, job responsibilities, education, sickness and death scatter families.

Abraham had such a job opportunity, An offer that would take him away from the country and the home, family, his kindred.

Abraham didn't leave his family from love of adventure.

And Abraham was given the opportunity to be a missionary.

Now the Lord had said to Abraham, get out of your country, from your family and from your father's house, to the land that I will show you.

Abraham had already been a missionary in his hometown for years.

But now it's time for him to expand his vision and widen his service.

He was called to be a foreign missionary.

We see in this verse the first thing it takes is a call from God.

God had been preparing him through his life experiences for a large and important assignment.

You're never too young to be a missionary and you're not too old.

He would be, if he was alive today at 75, he'd be my biological year twin.

God promised to be with him, to lead him and guide him, and to make it clear where Abraham should go because Canaan wasn't the only place.

There were places along the way to Canaan that he had mission service for him to do.

Young people, and those of you like me who are getting less young, if you yield your life to God, he has a place for you to work for him that he will show you.

God says to each of us, go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you.

Wherever we go, we're called to teach God's commandments.

And God has promised to go with us for he says, and lo, I'm with you always, even to the end of the age.

Before God can send us, however, he must first train us.

When I was a child, there was a paragraph in Ministry of healing that my dad had me memorize with him.

What is the purpose of genuine education?

Lots of things with the name education, they're just scams.

If it's not training for missions, it's not education.

Every son and daughter of God is called to be a missionary.

Most of you will recall the story of Jesus going to Bethany after Lazarus' death.

Jesus stopped at the outskirts of the town and Martha went to see him there.

After briefly talking to him, she quickly went back to their home and whispered to her sister, the teacher has come and is calling for you.

And I'm the Martha today to bring that whispered message.
