Mind Your Own Business

Dear Lord, we want to hear a word from you because there is nothing of value that I have to say of myself, but I pray that in these few moments that we have to dig deep into your word, your Holy Spirit would be our teacher.

Lord, we ask that he would come close to us and whisper the words in our ears that will impact us going forth from this place.

Lord, we submit ourselves to you now in Jesus' name, amen.

And as I said, each of these can be a sermon in and of itself, not can be.

Each of these I've preached as individual sermons.

And then I was preparing for this weekend, But this was in my personal devotional time, and I was in preparing for this weekend mode, reading through the book of Luke, and I came across these stories.

For the first time, it occurred to me that These stories, they're actually 3 stories, but kind of 4 sermons, they're related to each other.

And the relation that I found of these stories to each other is the title of this sermon, which is Mind Your Own Business.

My children would interpret that as me saying, can you get out of your brother's stuff?

Can you focus on your own life right now?

Luke chapter 10, verse 38, right at the end of the chapter.

Now it came to pass as they went, Luke 10, 38.

Now it came to pass as they went that he entered into a certain village and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.

And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet and heard his word.

But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, him being Jesus, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone?

And Jesus answered and said unto her, Mother, Mother, thou art careful and troubled about many things, but 1 thing is needful, and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

Martha is busy, she's serving the Lord, she's giving her all, she's doing her best, and then she notices that, hold up, I'm in this kitchen by myself, where's Mary?

She ought to be doing something in this ministry with me.

The first mind your own business has to do with working for the Lord, but we got our eye on what everybody else is doing in their ministry for the Lord.

I'm busy working for Jesus, but my eye is trained on why aren't they here early in the morning to do what I'm busy doing as well?

Why aren't they helping out with the ministry that we have to the homeless?

Why all these hypocrite Adventists out here in Sabbath school, but they do nothing for the community?

I'm working for the Lord, but my eyes are trained on what everybody else ought to be doing for the Lord.

And Jesus responds to her and says, Martha, you got to mind your own business because you're busy working for the Lord, but you forgot the most important part of working for the Lord, which is the Lord.

And he says, Martha, you're busy doing all these things, but you forgot me.

This story I heard, it kind of, it confused me.

So the confusing part we'll come back to.

The part that always, that was always the way it made sense to me, we'll talk about now.

That's the way that I always heard the sermon, preached the sermon in the past.

And then we're gonna come back to it after we do the third story.

Luke 13, and 1 of the company said unto him, unto Jesus, Master, and you'll immediately notice the similarity here, Master, speak to my brother that he divide the inheritance with me.

And Jesus said to him, man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?

And he spake a parable unto them saying, the ground of a rich man brought forth plenty.

And he goes into this parable that has to do with covetousness.

This man has a lot, and then he doesn't have room enough for it, and so he says, Pull down these barns and I'll build bigger barns, right?

But let's get back to the flow of the story.

So this man is talking to Jesus and he has a problem with his brother.

And as should be the custom, when the father has passed away, there's an inheritance and it should be divided amongst the sons.

Granted, the eldest probably gets the most, so maybe here it was the eldest brother who doesn't want to give the younger brother what his due is, and this younger brother thinks, you know what, you know who cares about justice?

If I have a problem in my family like this, who else would I talk to about it than Jesus?

I'm gonna go to Jesus with my problem, and he goes to Jesus, and he's like, Jesus, we've got this family dilemma.

My brother is refusing to do this that he ought to do, and he's leaving me out in the cold, like he's leaving me bereft of the inheritance that is due to me.

And I anticipate that he's expecting Jesus to say, why would he do that?

But Jesus gives a somewhat cryptic answer that I said we'll come back to, and then he goes in to talking about covetousness.

And a lot of the rest of the chapter he's talking about the sin of covetousness.

And it's like Jesus is saying, you're worried about your brother's greed, but have you looked at your own life?

What is it that's motivating this frustration that you have with your brother.

Is it not the sin of covetousness in your own heart?

Are you asking for the inheritance because you don't have enough food on the table?

You want the inheritance because you want more, right?

And so he says, be careful, beware of the sin of covetousness.

It's like we're worried sometimes about what's going on, the evil in the lives of our brothers and sisters.

And this is not saying that what his brother did was right, right?

But it's saying that we're so concerned about the wickedness and the evil in the lives of others, that we forget, in Jesus' words, in the words of Jesus, we forget the beam in our own eye.

I'm worried about the speck in my brother's eye, and because of it, I forget the beam in my own eye.

Turn with me to Luke chapter 6, this is a side story.

Luke 6 41 it says, and why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, or the speck in your brother's eye, but you don't perceive the beam in thine own eye?

Either How canst thou say to thy brother, brother, listen to Jesus' question, he says, how do you say to your brother, let me pull out the speck from your eye, when you yourself do not see that you have a beam in your own eye, thou hypocrite.

And a lot of times we kind of stop there.

We're like, yeah, yeah, yeah, stop judging me, you know?

Verse 42, cast out first the beam out of your own eye.

And then, and this is part of Jesus' words, right?

And then thou shall clearly see to pull out the speck in your brother's eye.

Jesus is not saying that people don't do wrong.

Jesus is not saying that we should be blind to the evils around us.

That's not his, he's saying that when we get so hyper-focused on other people's lives and their sinfulness, but we don't realize that we need to address our own business.

Jesus wants to do something in our own lives, there's covetous in our hearts, there's deep-rooted sin in our own hearts that actually prevents us from helping those around us.

I'm saying Jesus wants us to help others.

He says, take care of that beam first so that you can then help others around you.

Because you know when we go about trying to take out a speck from someone's eye when we got a beam in our eye, we're gonna hurt them.
