Hello, my name is Joe, and welcome to Inverse, a Bible study where we get into the verse.

We get into the text and we ask difficult questions from the Bible and we apply it to our lives and we have a great time doing it.

And I have friends here with me today and we're going to go at it together, beginning with Sebastian.

And we are looking at apologetics this season, and we are asking the foundational questions about Christianity.

And 1 of these foundational questions is 1 that we are unpacking in this episode right now, divine design.

And some people question that and they think that we come from different things.

We're going to explore it from the Bible and we're going to consider these before we read the verses.

Father in heaven, what a privilege it is that we created beings have an opportunity to talk about you.

We are invited into relationship with you.

Although you are creator and you're magnificent and powerful, you're interested in our heart.

And so as we study creation, as we talk about you, Lord, I pray that we would be drawn closer to you and stand in awe of who you are in your name I pray, amen.

All right, we are reading and we are considering Sebastian's favorite chapter of the Bible, but we're not going to let him read it.

We'll ask Sebastian the tough questions about it.

It's the first chapter in the Bible, the book of Genesis in chapter 1, beginning right with what matters in the first 5 verses.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

The earth was without form and void and darkness was on the face of the deep.

And the spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

And God divided the light from the darkness.

God called the light day and the darkness he called night.

So the evening and the morning were the first day." All right, Sebastian, why is this your favorite chapter?

Well, it is the parts of the Bible, the part of the Bible in my opinion, where God is the center figure.

He's the primary actor, the subject of almost every single verb in here.

And the best way to learn about an individual is to watch what they do and how they do it.

And so to me, I've been studying Genesis since I was baptized, these 2 chapters.

And I keep coming back and I keep discovering new things about God just by watching his actions and thinking about God in this way.

But it also is my favorite chapter because as a former atheist, I never could accept evolution, even as an atheist.

Now, I didn't have a lot of alternatives because I also didn't accept creation, but at the very core of it, Genesis, when I first read it and actually started to understand it, you started to realize the character of God is connected to my origin.

And every person in the world has to answer that question.

And why is there something rather than nothing?

Evolution explains how we got diversity of species, but it does not explain how you have something rather than nothing.

Okay, so these verses, this is God's opening statement in his book.

What do we know about him just from these first few lines?

I remember doing a study with a young woman, she was not Christian, and she wanted to know more about God.

And I started here, and as we read through, I asked her, what are you picking up about this being, this God?

And she says, well, 1 thing, He's good, because He creates so many good things.

He creates sunlight and trees, and that is 1 of the foundational things about God.

Yes, He is, you know, omniscient and so forth, but He is good.

So everything that He does, even His creation is flowing out of His goodness, His benevolence.

He could have created a world without color.

He could have created, okay, the ocean without any fish or anything like that.

But to think that he was so good that he would create all of these things for us to enjoy, for us to have pleasure and delight in, that's 1 of the biggest and greatest things that I see about God in Genesis 1.

I find it kind of fascinating that the Bible, you know, was given, and, but it never really questions the existence of God.

And so like, It proclaims the, I guess, most obvious truth, which is that God is the beginning of all things for us.

And so, but there is no beginning to him.

So that is a powerful statement and 1 that speaks really, I mean, it throws out 99.9% of other belief systems that are out there, or ideas, because it's a statement.

It's really a statement that's being made, that God, the God who loves, who is good, who is beautiful, who is very intentional, as we can see in this chapter, he is our origin.

You know, Joe, every person in the world has to answer 4 questions.

And this was critical for me coming from an atheistic worldview.

You have to have an answer on how do you find meaning in life?

Because some of the worst atheists have died the most inglorious deaths.

Because they felt like that poem, right, tiger, tiger, right, don't go into the dying of the light and all this other stuff.

You guys may not be familiar with that poem, but it's essentially this famous poem about approaching death and he calls it like a tiger.

And it's like you're, do not go quietly into that good night.

And so the whole idea is like you're raging, you're raging against the night, right?

And so this whole idea is that death is coming and you're fighting against this thing.
