Well, we have been going through our sermon series, and it's good to see a lot of you back.

I know that our Pathfinders have been away for some time.

I know that some of you have been away for the summer as well, but it's good to have most of you back with us today.

As we begin today's message, we've been going through the last few weeks.

We've had trouble with it the last couple weeks.

But anyway, we've been going through the 5 solas of the Reformation, and we haven't covered any of the solas yet, even though we've been doing this for 2 weeks.

The last couple of weeks we've been taking a look at the question, why are we even Protestant at all?

Because as some of the Adventists, we claim to be a part of the Protestant denomination, and what does it mean to be a Protestant?

And in reality, we are protesting exactly what Jesus did when he overturned the money changers tables.

When people were coming to the the temple to get a better understanding of scripture and a better understanding of who God was they were not always given a clear answer to the question what must I do to be saved?

And as time went on, and the early Christian church formed out of the teachings of Jesus, the answer that was made clear by Jesus of what must I do to be saved, began to get muddled up again.

When people would come to the church and ask that very simple question, they were answered with, well, how much money do you have?

And so Martin Luther, among many others, protested and said the answer to life's basic questions of where am I going and who is Jesus should be simple because Jesus made it simple and it had gone away from the simple message.

So the Protestants came back and said the message must be simple.

And today we'll be taking a look at the 5 mantras or the battle cry of the Reformation and making sure that Christianity remained simple even for 2024.

However, a lot of these different truths have been lost.

By the way, I wanted to also share with you this morning, for those of you that want to be here today, I'm really happy that you're here.

For those of you that are here today and you didn't want to be here today, Hey, I'm really happy that you're here.

And for those of you that came here today just because it's what you do, why are you here?

Is it to come here today so that we can keep up appearances?

I hope that you're here to worship your Lord.

I hope that you're here to honor the Savior that died for you, to take a few hours out of your week and remember why you are here on earth and what Christ has done for us.

So let's have a word of prayer, and then we're going to get in today's message.

Father, again, we come to you this Sabbath as is our custom, as you have told us to do.

And we are here to worship you, to thank you for being our God, and also to take our puny human brains and try to wrap them around who you are and your message to us.

May we also be comfortable with saying that we don't know everything and that you are too big for us to fathom.

As we do that here today, Lord, I ask that you would be with us.

Comfort everyone in this congregation today that needs comforting.

Maybe they've gone through some pain recently.

I am going to share with you a little bit about where I come from.

And by where I come from, I don't mean geographically so much as where I come from and my bloodline.

We're not going to be talking about my mother's side.

We're going to be talking about my dad's side this morning.

The Morgan side of the family, let's just say, are not the greatest people.

Back in the day, my grandfather, I never knew my grandfather, my grandfather died when my dad was, I think, about 12 years old.

There were 4 different brothers in the family.

Now, excuse the grainy picture because here they are.

3 of them fought in World War II, with the exception of my grandfather, because my grandfather was the baby of the family and he always got ridiculed that he was too Young to to get in there, but he served right after that war was over on the USS Enterprise I'm sure many of you know the Enterprise served on the Enterprise After all of them had their military service, they went back to Moscow or Potlatch, Idaho, and their loggers.

In fact, if you go to Idaho today and you meet a Morgan, run the opposite direction.

My family, at least in this generation, lived a very rough life.

My grandfather apparently used to tell my dad that they got paid on Friday and the paycheck was gone by Sunday.

Doing lots of different things that I'm sure you can leave to imagine.

This is the 1 that Maverick is named after.

Maverick is named Maverick Pierce, and this is Pierce.

This is my great uncle Pierce aboard something in World War II.

And please don't judge where I come from too much by this picture, but here are the 3 brothers.

And on the far right, that is my grandfather.

The fourth brother, by this time, had been run over by a logging truck in a logging accident and was no longer with the family.

Uncle Pierce, that's there in the center, died very soon after this picture.

And then you have my grandfather there on the far right, who died of a certain cancer due to overeating, the doctor said.

By the time my grandfather died, I think he was about 350 pounds plus or something like that.

So the doctors say that he ate himself to death.

So when by the time I came around, I didn't get to know any of these legends of my family except for 1.

And that's the guy on the far left holding that shotgun, I believe it is.

His name was David Franklin Morgan, or who we simply knew as Bud.

His story is 1 that is very close to my heart.

On my mom's side, I don't really know my grandfather very well on that side.

Unfortunately, that grandfather is a very staunch atheist.

He's kind of a harsh personality, doesn't want to get very close to the family.

So I have a grandfather, but I don't really know who he is.

And of course like I told you on my dad's side of the family, I don't know that grandfather either because he died long before I was born.

So Uncle Bud to me kind of was my grandfather growing up.

Uncle Bud was after he served in the military.

He bought the family farm and it's actually a pretty tragic story.

He had fallen in love with a Filipino girl over there and he had written his mother, so which would be my great-grandmother, and said he was bringing home this girl.

And she wrote back and said, if you bring that blankety-blank home, you're not part of my family.
