This was recorded at the Granite Bay Hilltop SDA Church, located in Granite Bay, California.

Hope you are blessed by the message and that it draws you closer to God.

Well we have 10 days of prayer and our focus for this particular time together is testimonies and answered prayer.

We know there is encouragement when we hear somebody else share testimony of how their prayers have been answered.

So we've been asking each of the pastors to share an experience that they've had of answered prayer.

So I'm gonna try and share 2 experiences.

1 occurred when I was young in our family.

Served to be sort of an anchor in many ways.

And then another 1 that is a little nearer to us, a little closer to our time.

So my dad was working in the weighing industry.

He worked for big weighing machines or scales for factories and trucks that would come in for weigh stations.

He was the manager of 1 province in South Africa.

But he felt the Lord calling him to go into ministry.

And finally the call became so strong that he packed up everything.

My sister and I were little at the time and he moved to Hildeberg College in South Africa and he studied theology.

And we have many stories of how the Lord provided during the 4 years when he was studying theology.

But he graduated, and after graduating, the next step is, well, you become a pastor and you go work with a church, but at the time there were no churches available, there were no posts for my dad to go and actually work at, and so he needed to decide what to do to provide for the family, and he could have gone back into the scale industry, the weighing industry, he had lots of experience, They would have rehired him, but he felt as though the Lord had called him out of that to do full-time ministry, and it didn't make sense to him to have to go back into something that God had called him from.

So he thought, well what could I do that could bring in some finances to provide for the family while I'm still doing ministry Well, he decided to become a coal porter.

They sell books they sell evangelistic Adventist books And so he decided to become a cold porter until a church opened up and he could step in as a pastor.

And so he began going from place to place with a bag full of books and he'd go knock on people's doors and he'd try and tell them about the books.

But My dad is not a very gifted salesman, and I think the reason for that is he would feel sorry for the people, and he ended up giving them the book, but he would have to pay for the book.

And so we weren't really making a lot of money at that time because he ended up giving more books away than he actually sold.

But we were trying to just scrape by and keep things together, waiting for a call to open up for pastoral ministry.

A couple of months into this, my dad ended up getting chickenpox, adult chickenpox.

Very serious if you're an adult, you get chickenpox.

And he was laid up at home for several weeks.

So he had chickenpox followed by pneumonia.

He was laid up, couldn't go work for at least a month or so.

And whatever little savings we had was gone.

I mean it had gotten down to the point of wondering where our next meal would come from.

I was real young, probably about 8 or 9 years of age.

And you know, we trusted that the Lord was going to provide.

Well, 1 evening after family worship, my dad was still not 100%, so he was in bed.

I remember we came in and we had family worship.

And we're praying, saying, Lord, you know, we believe you've called us into ministry.

There's not a whole lot we can do, what are we gonna do?

And after worship, the phone rang, and there was a telephone right there next to the bed, and my mother picked up the phone, and she answered the phone, And a voice on the other side, and of course, this is way before call ID or anything like that.

And so she answered the phone, and the voice on the other side said, read Isaiah 58.

And they said, oh, that's, well, they reached over and they picked up the Bible that they had there next to the bed.

And they opened up to Isaiah 58 and they read the passage.

And if you're familiar with that, it's cry aloud, you know, tell my people their sins.

It's sort of an evangelistic call, you know, proclaim the gospel kind of thing.

And they thought, well, that's a little odd.

And a few moments later, the phone rang again.

And again, my mother picked it up and answered it.

And same voice, same message, read Isaiah 58.

Of course, this was very puzzling to her.

And then I went there, and the phone hung up, and she said again to my dad, this is strange.

And he said, I wonder what that, he said, well, send John to the living room and have him get the big family Bible.

Now, we had a big family Bible that we'd often use for our family worship, And it was in the living room on the table.

So I ran out and I grabbed the big family Bible and came running back.

And there, right in the middle of the Bible, were crisp hundred dollar, or the currency in South Africa, $100 bills right there.

Just enough money to get us through that time period where my dad could recover and get back on his feet and get out there and start paying the books.

The amazing part of the story is the phone never rang again.

So I think there was an angel somewhere in the switchboard somewhere making a call, providing for the family.

So the theme of a little talk this evening is God will provide.

And I think if you look back over your life, you can see many times where God has provided and God has taken care of us in many different ways.

So that was a story that occurred a long time ago but it's been an anchor for our family and my dad has never had to do any other work other than what God called him to do, preach the gospel.

God always provided, spend time in the mission field, travel around preaching and teaching the gospel, and that's what God had called him to do.

But another story of how God answers prayer and provides is something that occurred a little closer to us, And some of you might be familiar with this experience that I'll be sharing with you.

You probably haven't all the details of what this is, but let me share it with you.

Back in 2017, January of 2017, a number of you were part of the Granite Bay Church at the time.

We were still meeting in the Warehouse Church.

It was during the week, and I was off speaking somewhere at a church in Ruth's home.

At the time, Ruth was working as a home health nurse, and she was taking care of children, special needs children.

And there was a little boy that she was taking care of, and she was scheduled to go in, I think it was a Wednesday, she was scheduled to go in and take care of the little boy, but the mother had called and said he had a doctor's appointment so she didn't have to go in, she didn't have to work that day.

And so she was at home kind of wondering, well, I have a day off.

And then the phone rang and it was the blood bank in Auburn.

And she had donated blood sometime back, but it had been many months before.

And they called up and they said, would you be interested in coming back?

We need blood, would you come do a donation for us?

And she said, well, I'm off today, I'll go donate blood.

And so she got in the car and she drove down and went into the donation center.

And her hemoglobin usually runs on the lower side.

So she asked the lady, she said, could you just check my blood before we go through the whole process of doing the blood donation?

So she poked her finger and she looked at it and she was very surprised.

And if you want to give blood, it has to be 12.5.
