Overcoming in Christ

Fresh manna fell to the ground as a gift from God while the Israelites were in the wilderness.

It was fresh from the ovens of heaven, baked by the master baker himself.

How the Israelites must have anticipated the taste and the smell of each morning's delivery.

Just like the Israelites, you too can now experience the taste and smell of fresh manna.

Today you'll be listening to Jim Nephew, pastor of the Alpena and Onaway Seventh-day Adventist churches.

Is there a difference between worldly peace and heavenly peace?

To have worldly peace, everything out there has to be just right.

But to have heavenly peace, it really doesn't matter what's happening out there because I have peace on the inside.

Because Jesus is abiding in me and I'm abiding in Him.

Doesn't matter if the tempest is raging, whether the blizzard is blowing, whether the ice is freezing around me, or whether it's giving way, I have peace, heavenly peace.

Today, as we think about God, much of the world about this time of the year starts thinking about Jesus.

They may only think of Jesus once a year, but if they do, probably about this time of the year, they might start thinking about him.

Wonderful to imagine Jesus coming as a baby.

When I became a father, that looked different to me than it did as a baby growing up, as a young boy.

When I held my daughter in my arms for the first time.

When I held my grandson in my arms for the first time.

When I held my grandson in my arms for the first time, had a little different feeling that Jesus came, that God became flesh and blood to dwell among us.

Do you ever feel that you face the same temptations over and over?

That these certain besetting temptations sometimes cause you to stumble and fall over and over again to the point that you Almost give up trying to resist.

Well, I can overcome that sin, but this other sin over here, the 1 I don't tell anybody about, that 1 gets me every time.

Maybe you've begun to doubt God's word that you can be an overcomer.

Maybe you have even begun to believe Satan's lie that there's no hope for you or that God has changed his standards.

Well, God used to care about that, but if God wanted to do something about it, then why am I still struggling with this thing?

Just a few responses that we may experience to failure.

Today I wanna get real practical as we explore from God's word, what he offers us.

We're gonna explore the good news, the gospel that Jesus came to give, to remind us of the gospel that had been preached through Moses and through the Prophets, but which people had lost sight of.

Would you like to be a follower of Jesus?

You don't have to answer right now, but by the end, I'd like you to answer that in your heart at least.

The angel said in Matthew chapter 1, verse 21 through 33.

Matthew chapter 1, verse 21 through 23, and 1.21-23, and she will bring forth a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.

The reason you should call his name Jesus is for he will save his people from their sins.

Well, you might say, well, yeah, I've been saved from my sins.

Are you still falling into temptation and falling prey to your sins?

If a lifeguard saves me from drowning, am I still drowning?

I shouldn't be still drowning if they've saved me.

But if the lifeguard comes along and says, hey Jim, by the way, you're fine.

So this was done that it might be fulfilled, which was spoken by the Lord to the prophet, saying, behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which is translated, say it with me, God with us.

If I'm still drowning in my sin, it's because I'm rejecting letting Jesus be in me.

I'm still trying to save myself, which always results in a continual drowning process.

The disciples, Jesus says to his disciples in John chapter 16, verse 31 to 33, Jesus answered them, do you now believe?

Indeed the hour is coming, yes has now come, that you will be scattered each to his own and will leave me alone.

And yet I am not alone because The Father is with me.

These things I have spoken to you that in me you may have peace.

Friends, Jesus wants to offer us peace today.

In the world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I've overcome the world.

In this world, you and I are going to have problems, troubles, but be of good cheer, Jesus is with you and he has overcome these problems.

You know, I like going places with people that have already been there.

Because the areas where I'm a little unsure of, I might be a little afraid of, they can reassure me through those times.

By the way, just up around this next bend, when I was here last time, I saw...

Are you ready to go around the bend with me?

He tells us there's something really exciting around this next bend.

Hey, I know you're a little bit afraid right now.

Why does this cause us to be of good cheer?

Why should you rejoice because someone else has overcome the world when you must overcome it also.

The grand truth which answers this question is that you are not an overcomer in yourself, but an overcomer in Christ.

It's in Christ that you and I experience being an overcomer.

The Apostle Paul in writing to the Corinthians, 2 Corinthians 2, verse 14, Again, I encourage you to write these texts down because you may not have time to look them up, all of them, while we're going through them.

2 Corinthians 2 verse 14, Now thanks be to God who always leads us in what?

How often does God lead us in triumph, according to the scriptures?

If we are a follower of Jesus, how often will we experience triumph?

He's not in behind us with a whip, driving us to success, But he's leading us to victory, leading us to triumph.

And through us diffuses the fragrance of his knowledge in every place.

Ah, why did I end up at the repair shop with my car this week?

Could it be that you were to be a diffuser of the fragrance of the knowledge of God to the people that were at the repair shop?

We are caused to triumph in Christ simply because Christ has triumphed over everything, and in Him victory is ours.

Hebrews 4.15 says, "'For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin." Now friends, I want you to understand, just because you're tempted for something, doesn't mean you've sinned.

He didn't use some special power to not enter into sin.

Sometimes he was, well, it seems like he was always being emotionally attacked by people.

Always people making insinuations about his birth situation.
