The World & You

Fresh manna fell to the ground as a gift from God while the Israelites were in the wilderness.

It was fresh from the ovens of heaven, baked by the master baker himself.

How the Israelites must have anticipated the taste and the smell of each morning's delivery.

Just like the Israelites, you too can now experience the taste and the smell of fresh manna.

Today you'll be listening to Grady Yonis, pastor of the Gladwin and Marion Seventh-day Adventist Churches.

Well, this morning, We're going to be talking about the Word of God and you, and I hope it's okay with you if we study the Bible together this morning.

We're going to use the Bible as our textbook, but before we get there, Let's pray and ask for the Lord's blessing.

Father in heaven, as we're about to open your Word, we ask for the Holy Spirit to guide us.

We acknowledge that without your help, we cannot understand your Word.

I know that some of you are still getting familiar with the Bible, so I thought I would just give the references to you ahead of time in case you want to place your finger there.

But we're going to go to several spots in the Bible.

Mark, chapter 5, Luke, chapter 1, Genesis, chapter 1, and then John, chapter 1.

So if you know where the New Testament is, you want to stay around there, we're gonna go into other verses too.

Well as you're turning over there, I have something to confess with you.

I have a very bad habit when it comes to changing the oil of my car.

I mean I would set up a reminder on my phone And I would drive the car and you know they put those stickers on your window is right there I mean not right there, but like right there on the top corner and I would be staring at my odometer every single day, and I would still forget And to tell you the truth right now my car is 1200 miles over.

Some mechanics in the room like it's about to change.

What will happen if I never ever change the oil in my car ever again?

It's not going to work, it's going to ruin the engine and the car and it's not going to work anymore.

Now I want you to notice that those few quarts of oil can take down a 4, 000 pound vehicle.

Just 5 to 8 quarts of oil, it seems little and insignificant.

But when you do it over and over and over again, it's going to take down the whole car.

That 1 little thing, if continuously neglected, will stop everything from working properly.

Now, I think that experience is very applicable to our spiritual life.

I found this quote, and I think you can summarize it very well.

It says, what we do not overcome, it's talking about sin, what we do not overcome will do what?

What we fail to overcome will overcome us and work our destruction.

And those little things that may seem little insignificant, but if we fail to make the change, it will eventually destroy us.

And I pick gambling because it kind of runs in my family.

It starts with my great-grandfather and he had this bad habit of gambling.

I'm telling you the story about my grandfather.

So he had a wife and 6 children, including my father.

And every night, almost every night, he would go out and gamble.

While in reality, they barely had any food on the table.

He was very addicted to gambling, so at 1 point he lost and came home drunk, became violent towards his wife.

He gambled again and lost and sold the only vehicle that the family owned.

He gambled again and he had to borrow so much money to pay his debt.

Next thing you know, he left the entire family for another woman and the family fell apart.

And it may be small and significant in the beginning.

And in hindsight we can say what he did not overcome, overcame him and worked out his destruction.

Now, I think we can apply it not just to gambling.

The little thing that we neglect to overcome will overcome us.

So this morning, I want to show you how we can overcome.

And it's applicable whether it be to little things or big things.

And this is a story of the interaction of Jesus with a man who is very, very close to destruction.

And we're going to look at his characteristics.

The Bible says, Then they came to the other side of the sea.

Now, by the way, this story is about Jesus and his disciples.

So when he says they, he's talking about them.

Then They came to the other side of the sea.

Then they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gadarenes.

Verse 2, when he, Jesus, had come out of the boat, and immediately there met him out of the tomb a man with what?

With unclean spirit, verse 3, who had his dwelling among the tombs, and no 1 could bind him, even with chains.

Because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been pulled apart by him, and shackles broken in pieces, neither could anyone..." What's the next word?

And always night and day he was in the mountain and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones." Now what do you think about this man?

What is 1 word that we can use to describe him?

People tried to put him in chains but it did not work.

Clearly he is pretty close to his destruction.
