October 12, 1998, 6 men were killed in the pre-dawn hours while sleeping inside the rails of a train track.

The incident took place around 3.15 in the morning when a southbound Union Pacific train with 105 cars was about 50 miles north of Harlington, Texas.

The crew was unable to stop the 45 mile per hour train in time and none of the 6 men were adequately awakened by their hope by the horn.

Tragically, this is not an uncommon occurrence among undocumented immigrants and other transients.

You see, there's a mistaken belief that snakes will not cross railroad tracks.

Therefore, it is believed that 1 can sleep between the rails and be protected from the snakes.

This tragedy is only accentuated by the reality that this is erroneous information.

Officials from the Union Pacific Railroad have noted that their tracks are littered with snakes that have been cut in half while crossing the rails.

The rocks, the warm rocks, under an elevated rail bed actually attract snakes at night.

There's a false sense of security that we are okay, that we are in control.

And prophecy predicted it because we read there in Revelation 3, because you say, I am rich and have become wealthy and have need of nothing, and do you not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked?

In describing our situation, Paul writes, but know this, that in the last days perilous times will come.

For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemous, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanders, and without self-control.

They will be brutal, Despisers of good and traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God.

Having a form of godliness but not denying its power, and from such a people, turn away.

While we may feel safe within the walls of our home, or church, or with our kids attending the nearby church school, or let us remember snakes still cross rails.

Title of the message this morning is Media and Mediums.

Dear Lord, please forgive us of our sins, forgive us of our naivety, and please, Lord, would you speak to our hearts this morning?

Would you help us to listen for your voice and may we hear it here in this place together.

Please wash and cleanse me that I might just be a vessel for you.

We want to sit at your feet, we want to hear from you.

It was a day much like that of any other.

The young couple were in their happy home.

There were no children in the picture as of yet, but they had numerous pets in their home.

They loved each other and they loved their home.

Everything had been perfect until that day.

You see, she somehow had managed to separate herself from her husband.

She hadn't necessarily intended to do so perhaps, but when she discovered her aloneness, she failed to return to him.

Perhaps she assumed she was strong enough, you know, smart enough, sharp enough.

Anyway, There would not likely have been any problems if they had stayed together.

The moment she entered was the moment she began to be deceived.

Let's pick up with the story in Genesis 2, verse 25.

Genesis chapter 2 in verse 25 reads like this, and they were both naked, and the man and his wife were not ashamed.

I'm sorry, the man and his wife, and they were not ashamed.

Now, the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made.

There's actually a play on words here, for the word for Cunning is similar to the word for naked.

So if you were reading it from the original, you would sort of pick up on that.

It's the same word, but it's just different.

So the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made.

And he said to the woman, has God indeed said, you shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

Notice he said of every tree of the garden.

He's putting out something that's rather extreme.

The woman said to the serpent, we may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden.

But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, you shall not eat it nor shall you touch it lest you die." Notice she doesn't call the tree by its name.

She only says the tree, but this was not just any tree.

Serpent said to the woman, you'll not surely die.

For God knows that the day you eat of it, your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes and desirable, and a tree desirable to make 1 wise, she took of its fruit and she ate, and she also gave to her husband with her, and he ate, and then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked, and they sowed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.

Seldom do we realize how easy it is to be deceived.

For example, just assume with me that penguins live with a density of 1, 000 penguins per square mile, and can run an average speed of 7 miles per hour on land and swim at 20 miles per hour in the water.

Also assume that a polar bear has a territory of 10 square miles and can run at 25 miles per hour and swim at 10 miles per hour.

The question therefore is posed, How many penguins will an average polar bear eat in any given month?

Remembering that a polar bear could, as a maximum, only eat 1 penguin per hour, and 7% of the land is next to the sea.

Because polar bears and penguins don't live on the same pole.

Over the side hangs a rope ladder with rungs a foot apart.

Tide rises at a rate of 9 inches per hour, and at the end of 6 hours, how much of the rope ladder will still remain above the water, assuming that 9 feet were above the water when the tide began to rise.

It's a cute little story, it's 1 of those things that's sort of enticing.

But It's a good illustration of how easy it is for us to be deceived, fooled, tricked.

2 young sisters were getting ready to boil some eggs to color for Easter.

1 sister said to the other, I'll give you a dollar If you let me break 3 eggs on your head.

Gleefully, the older sister broke 2 eggs over her sister's head and standing stiff with her eyes shut to try to refrain from the goo getting in her eyes, she asked about the third egg.

Sister said, I'm not doing that, it cost me a dollar.

We are more easily deceived than we realize.

We're intrigued by these simple stories, like, try me again, I'll get it this time, right?

As though we can try to outwit the antagonist, we are slow to learn about how naive we really are.

Just like Eve, we are easily deceived and unknowingly can be tricked by the devil when we allow him to entertain our thoughts.

Eve finds herself at the tree and is greeted by a beautiful serpent.

In the book, Story of Redemption, we find a description of what this serpent looked like before the curse of sin.

She writes, Satan assumes the form of a serpent and enters Eden.
