And this episode today is about knowing God, to know God.

And Paul, can you begin with us with prayer?

Gracious Father in heaven, what a joy, what a privilege to get to know you.

Lord, we thank you for this awesome privilege of knowing you, knowing who you are, for the intimacy you promise.

We pray today as we study your word that these things will be made alive to us.

Okay, so we are looking at the importance of knowing God.

These are the last hours of his life with his disciples in the garden before, just moments before his arrest and his death.

And it's a most earnest prayer for you and for me and for our walk with him.

RJ, can you read to us from John 17, verses 1 through 3?

Jesus spoke these words, lifted up his eyes to heaven and said, Father, the hour has come.

Glorify your son, that your son also may glorify you, as you have given him authority over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as you have given him.

Verse 3, and this is life eternal, that they may know you, the only true God and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.

So this is Jesus' prayer, and he's praying that we know God.

Jemima, why is this so important that we know God?

Last episode, we left off talking about an invitation, Christ knocking on the doors of our heart.

So once we accept Jesus into our heart, we have to know the type of person He is.

How are we going to exist in relationship?

How are we going to love somebody that we do not know?

So to know God, to know what are the things He likes, what does He like to do, What are the things that make him happy?

You know, who is this person that just knocked on my door?

You want to get to know his character and his personality.

So is this a simple, I know what 2, 2 plus 2 equals 4, Check.

I have a deep understanding, you know, I'm reminded of, you know, in everyday life, right?

Let's say sometimes I call my friend, she doesn't answer the phone, right?

I don't automatically say, oh, she's ignoring me, she must be mad at me, right?

Because I know her, I know that her posture towards me is to pick up the phone and she's happy to talk to me.

And if she goes too long without answering, something is wrong, right?

So understanding when we're talking about knowing God is we're talking, we're referring to knowing Him and how He operates, you know, what is His character?

You know, why does he do the things that he does?

You want to make sure that we understand him as a person.

And having a clear understanding of God's character will then enable you and help you out with your relationship with Christ.

Because some people, they just like, oh, we just have to have the relationship with Christ.

Okay, let me just, like you said, cross that off and have that relationship with Christ.

But if you understand who He is and His character and His love for you and all that He has done in and through you and for you, it's like it's much easier for you to have a relationship with Him.

So that's why I believe it's so important.

You know, in the book of Job, 1 of his friends, Eliphaz, gives him some advice.

He does give him 1 piece of advice, which I think it holds.

He says, acquaint now thyself with him and be at peace.

My wife and I, Joe, we are foster parents.

We've had several foster kids go through our house.

And no matter how good we provide for them, no matter how wonderful the stability they experience, they always want to go back to their birth parents.

They could have the best Christmas gifts.

They could have, everything could be well appointed, but they want to know who their birth parents are.

Even if they've left a situation where they suffered great neglect and the house was a wreck and there was situations of substance abuse, those children will often acknowledge that things were pretty bad, but they want to know who their parents are, they wanna go back to that, because there's a bond there, there's an unspoken, unwritten bond, and each of us has that, and we need to know the Lord, because that's the deep yearning of our hearts.

So even if we've been estranged from God, separated from Him, our view of Him distorted, we've forgotten many things about Him, there's still something in our heart that can only be satisfied by knowing Him.

Yeah, and I would like to add on, you know, as far as knowing God, right?
