Healing the Other Deadly Wound

Father in heaven, we just rejoice in the privilege that we have at this convocation to consider this momentous subject, medical missionary work, and its connection to evangelism.

Lord, help us this afternoon to especially focus our attention on this healing process that needs to take place between the gospel ministry and the medical missionary workers.

This is personal, but it has implications for the work across the world.

Help us to be ready to hear what your Holy Spirit tells us today.

So I call this actually the other deadly wound.

You know, we know about the deadly wound in Revelation 13 and that that wound is on the way to almost entire healing.

You know, any of you wound care specialists here?

That's good actually, because I'm gonna make a few analogies to wound care at the end, so I won't have to worry too much about whether I hit the bullseye.

I'm gonna be in the neighborhood, but if some of you wanna correct me on anything, please feel free.

I'd like to have this even better on target.

I want to start though by asking you a quiz question today.

I know we're not doing anything academic today, right?

I appreciate those testimonies earlier, but This does have something to do actually with our subject believe it or not So here's a here's the question who made the first personal computer Was it Tandy?

Apple IBM or Atari Okay, some of you just just formulate your answer in the mind.

How many are not satisfied with any of those answers?

Okay, Tim is not, but Tim has a little bit of an unfair advantage because he's heard this presentation before.

Those companies would all be logical choices, right?

They all were around right about the time the PC came out, but Would you believe that the first PC was actually made by Xerox Corporation?

But Xerox Corporation really did have the right approach.

There's a picture of the Alto workstation right there.

Now I want you to look at that interface.

You've got windows up on the screen, you have menus, there are icons there, there's a mouse.

But really the interesting part about this is the timing.

How many of you were even around in the mid-1970s?

Had you heard of email yet in the mid-1970s?

In fact, I first got into email when my wife and I were courting back in the mid-1990s.

Of course Xerox unfortunately didn't take advantage of what they had created.

So along came a couple of boys from California.

Bill Gates of Microsoft, after he borrowed, shall we say, some of the ideas from the Xerox Alto workstation, went on to become at 1 time the wealthiest man in the world.

And of course Steve, the late Steve Jobs, built Apple into the most envied company I think in the in the world, arguably 1 of the most valuable as well.

So the question that comes to us is how did Xerox Corporation manage to fumble away what was arguably the greatest, most profitable business opportunity in recent history?

The Alto workstation was developed in Palo Alto, California, hence the name.

Xerox had a research center out there and the the guys that were involved at the park, they called it Xerox Park, Palo Alto Research Center.

The guys that were involved in Xerox Park were the hippie types.

You know, this was the early mid-70s, so they kind of had the long hair, you know.

They had long hair and they were kind of freewheeling and free-thinking and that was the very opposite of the Xerox management back East.

You know, the 2 groups just didn't really see eye to eye.

And the management, the top brass of Xerox, saw Xerox as a what kind of company?

And so they looked at this Alto workstation and they're like yeah that's nice guys can you do something with copiers please?

They didn't see the benefit that this invention would bring to their corporation.

They didn't see how that would fit into their paradigm of being a copier company.

And then because of those 2 factors, as I said earlier, Xerox lost billions upon billions of dollars in lost revenue that could have been theirs had they really marketed and developed these ideas.

Now I'd like to suggest to you that this situation is not entirely unlike what we have as Seventh-day Adventists.

This is what this convocation is all about.

Let me just review a little history with you.

And in 1863 she had a vision that outlined the health reform message.

It was only 3 years later that this building was purchased in Battle Creek and became the Western Health Reform Institute.

Either way, 1863 is also a notable date in Adventist history for what other reason?

First organization took place in Michigan Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, That's right.

So the year the church was organized is the same year that Ellen White was given the light on health reform in a broad way.

Then a little bit later, another influential individual comes onto the scene Anybody know this youngster?

Kellogg when he was 24 years old and Became the medical superintendent of the Battle Creek Sanitarium at the ripe old age of 24.

You really need to get with the program today.

Can you imagine taking over as medical director of the Battle Creek Sanitarium at 24?

Ellen White told us it was the right approach.

I'm gonna just run through some statements from Councils on Health with you.

Just look at some of this stuff, it's amazing.

She says, our physicians are to unite with the work of the ministers of the gospel.

Through their labors, souls are to be saved that the name of God may be magnified." Now that's a beautiful statement, isn't it?

That's a nice 1 to keep on your phone or somewhere, just as a reminder, right?
