GYC 2011 Seminar: The Greatest of All Our Needs

I suspect that This kind of seminar will be filling in as time goes by.

So you were wise to come at this time and take advantage of it from the beginning.

There are a couple of things that I want to take care of so that that is clarified from the beginning.

That's in reference to the book that I made, that I made a reference last night.

That's called Adventism's Greatest Need, The Outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

And I brought a number of them here to make them available to you.

Natty gave that to me at a special price, which is not the 1 that you will get at the ABC or anywhere else.

So if you are interested, see me afterwards for that or during the session.

The other thing is I brought a few, just a few copies of Decoding Bible Prophecy, which is what we used for the Net 11 series.

Some of you may know that I just finished a couple of months ago the Net11 series with 650 churches on satellite.

And to date, our best estimate is about 5, 000 people were baptized as a result of that in North American Division.

It was written for guests to, as a primer, as a beginning book of how to interpret Bible prophecy.

It's a book that is designed to share with other people.

I just thought that it would be good to sing, right, because we don't come to a seminar just to be at a seminar and then because we get seminaritis you know after that and that's a disease that is not very good to carry and there's no cure against it really until you really get busy and actually do something for other people.

So let's ask the Holy Spirit to come into our lives and 1 of the best ways to do that is to praise him in song.

How many of you are acquainted with this song, How Deep the Father's Love?

As last night Sean Reed mentioned the key to the Holy Spirit.

And I've been studying this for over 20 years at a deeper level.

And the key to the Holy Spirit is to really understand Jesus.

Because the Holy Spirit's objective is through and through to show you Jesus.

That's his raison d'etre as the French would say.

How vast beyond all measure that he would send his only son and make of wreck his treasure.

The father turns his face away, as wounds that mar the chosen 1, bring many sons to glory.

Behold the man upon the cross, my sin upon his shoulders.

It was my sin that held him there until it was accomplished.

But I will boast in Jesus Christ, his death and resurrection.

These are beautiful words, when you think about it.

You know, I will not boast in anything, no gift, no power, no wisdom.

That's a reference to Galatians 6, isn't it?

That's what Paul said, his death and resurrection.

I cannot give an answer but this I know with all my heart his wounds have paid my ransom.

That I'm saved, eternally saved because of this great love for me.

Let's sing that last part, Why should I gain from his reward?

I cannot give an answer, but this I know with all my heart, his wounds have paid my ransom.

Heavenly Father, we just want to thank you very much for making it possible for us to be here at GYC this year.

No doubt in this room with these many people, there are some stories that belie miracles about bringing us here today.

We want to thank you for what you plan to do in our lives and in our hearts.

We want to thank you for giving us the opportunity to be exposed to the word of God, and to the people of God, and to the things of God, so that we can turn our faces towards you, understand your purposes better, and surrender all to you, and let you work in our lives.

Dear Father, we could go through this seminar and at the end of it say, well, that was interesting.

Or we could appropriate the fullness of everything you have in mind to give us today.

I believe that we shortchange you time and again and fall short in our openness to receive what you have to offer to us.

Help us through the ministry of angels and through the presence of your Holy Spirit to open our hearts so that you may speak to us today.

That this may not be simply a very interesting informational meeting, but it will challenge our hearts, it will prompt us to total surrender.

They make us desire all that God has in mind for each of us.

Bless us according to your loving kindness and according to our great need.

How many of you remember the 2004 tsunami that took place the day after Christmas a few years ago.

You remember that because it was all over the news and it was a big deal how the waves came and came and they kept coming and wiped out entire villages in Indonesia and much of that part of Asia and a lot of despair.

Entire towns were razed to the point that 229, 000 people died.

That's 1 of the greatest tragedies in the last 150 years.

There are very few that have been bigger than that.

In fact, British seismologists discovered a few months later that there was an 800-mile crack on the ocean floor as a result of this single earthquake.

It was the equivalent of 1 gigaton of power.

And that is why the entire earth, for the first time in modern history, the entire earth shook.

Not just that part of the Indian Ocean, the entire earth shook.

But there's an amazing story in the midst of that tragedy and that's the story of Dalyn Sanders.

Dalyn Sanders is a originally from Sri Lanka and he moved to the United States, lived here for many years and then decided that God was calling him back to go back to his original country to help the many children in Sri Lanka who have no parents.

And so he established an orphanage right by the shore.

And he had 28 kids there, plus a couple of staff members, 2 or 3 staff members, and that Sunday morning, the day after Christmas in 2004 was just like this time, it was a Sunday morning, no no, the day after Christmas this year is on Monday, so never mind that.

Anyway, the day after Christmas, he was with his word, only a few feet away from the shore, reading the Bible and studying and praying, until he heard a voice, an urgent voice say to him or say to people that the sea is coming.

And sure enough it was like 802 or something like that.

He got up from his knees and looked out and sure enough there was this, the tsunami was building up.

It takes a little bit to build up, you know, it just pulls back from the shore and then it builds up and it starts coming.

So he saw that that was coming and instinctively he called everybody, his staff members and all the children to get to the boat.

Now what's your logical instinct if you see that there's going to be 20 or 30 foot high wall of ocean coming at you.

You run away the opposite direction, right?

That's what most people did and many of them perished.

Thank you I was just wondering where the references for the quote that Ellen White says that every problem we have is a lack of faith?

White thing in your computer or something, I don't have it in this presentation, but she does say that every failure, she says it this way, every failure, the word failure is used there, every failure in the Christian walk or something has to do with our lack of faith.

Every failure on the part of the children of God is due to their lack of faith.

My husband pastors a couple of different churches and 1 of the, I guess, frustrations that I'm currently having as a pastor's wife is, I see your example of the 8 people in Russia and they got down and they prayed and they were able to, you know, explode their church growth.

What happens when it's really just the pastor and his wife?

And the problem is, is you can't seem to move the congregation.

I mean, they say that they're interested.

But when the rubber meets the road, they're not doing anything.

And it just gets discouraging, because you just feel like you're talking to a dead crowd?

A couple of things I'd like to share about that.

1 is Sometimes God does not answer to the level and extent that we hope because he is waiting for us to discover the real problem.

Sometimes if he were to answer, we would skip certain steps in our own character building in the process.

Sometimes, because I've seen that happen in my life and I've seen that happen in my ministry as well.

Sometimes, if God were to bless us to the level that we hope He would, without changing my character to the level that needs to be changed, I may end up attributing the work of God to all kinds of things, and I may become more vulnerable after the victories of God than before that.

We must remember that commensurate to the level of God's success will be our level of surrender and sacrifice.

Every story you read major mission work mission stories you know they they they they powerful work of god in history what you find in the new testament you know why why was paul was much much more effective than Matthias was.

Why was Peter more effective than other disciples?

Perhaps because they grew to the level that they were willing to sacrifice at levels that others were not willing to sacrifice.

Another aspect has nothing to do with ourselves.

That's an aspect that may have to do with myself.

But some things may have to do with others.

History shows, I mean Jesus is a good example.

You cannot get better than Jesus in terms of being perfect in character and surrender to God.

And yet, he didn't see the fruit of his labors to the level that the disciples did.

He saw that thousands of people come to be healed by him or to be fed by him, but they were not totally committed.

In fact, in John 6, you find a most remarkable dialogue, a monologue by Jesus at first and then a dialogue.

And when Jesus really makes it clear to them that it's all about self-surrender and about eating him as the bread of life, people leave him in droves.

And you would say, how could that happen?

So sometimes it might be that the Spirit of God knows that certain things need to mature around us.

But the people that God was able to use, He was able to use in spite of whether or not they could see the results of their labor.

They were used in some significant way, Sometimes they didn't know it at the time, but even later, their record, their evidence, generations later, sometimes in mission experiences, people responded in powerful ways for the work that they had done then.

So our job, my job as a child of God is to, my number 1 job is to surrender all to him.

And to leave it all in his hands and to make sure that he could use me whenever he's ready to use me, that he could use me and that I am willing to sacrifice everything that it takes to be successful Because that's really what it means.

If you're going to be successful in Christ, as Paul said to Timothy, you will be persecuted.

If you want to make little waves for God, then you're going to, you're going to, you're going to, the pain is going to be little.

But if it's going to be significant, the devil is going to be after you because he's going to say, you're really messing with my kingdom here now.

You know, before, You're okay, you know, nice little church out here, good person, but still not really shaking my place very much.

But if that's where we are, you know, where God is leading us and what we're ready to do, then we need to be willing to surrender all in significant ways.

And I'm not talking about masochism, I'm not talking about a martyr syndrome, I'm talking about a willingness to be led where God would lead us.

And that begins with a statement on my part that says, God, I'm willing to trust you, come what may.

I will follow you, I long for you to use me in whatever way you can, however much you can, but I don't want you to not be able to use me because I'm stopping you from it.

You may be able to use me more, but you're not because I'm stopping you.

I mean, I have sometimes, I have cried like a baby when I recognize that that is exactly the case with me.

God could have used me so much more if I had surrendered that much more to him.

You mentioned the example of those 2 pastors in China, those lady pastors and their churches.

Should we endorse women pastors or how do we make sense of those things when so many churches split over that topic?

We can see examples of women that have been effective in ministry.

Well, we could really go on into this, but we're not going to.

It is clear to me that the Holy Spirit has endorsed these women because they have done things for God.

This is not kingdom building, not to the best evidence available.

Conditions & Hindrances for Spirit Filling

Welcome to Conditions 2 and Hindrances 4, the Spirit Infilling.

Welcome back those of you who were here the first session and welcome those of you who are here for the first time.

We're going to get into this session in a very practical way in terms of our lives and a lot of the experiences and references will be that way.

There's a number of things that I'll share from the Spirit of Prophecy as well as the Bible about that.

The Ministry Magazine, for those of you Who Are Pastors and Get Ministry Magazine published a couple of articles this summer, I think it was July and August or something like that, with these subjects, primarily these subjects, so you can have access to that that way.

A number of people have taken advantage of getting the book and it's here.

If you're interested in that, after the session today, let me know.

We have that for sale at a price that you can get it at the ABC.

But before we get into that subject, we hope even before we have some, we have prayer for that subject, I'd like to give an opportunity for other questions and answers if you have any, especially those of you who were here the first session, if you have any questions or if any questions pop into your mind at this point, this is a good time to do that.

We'll probably do another session in the break, as part of a break.

And if there are no questions at this point, then we'll get going.

And you can save your questions until later.

Anytime you have a question for clarification, what do you mean, why did you mean by that, or where's that found, or whatever, just raise your hand and get my attention to do that.

The rule for the questions is basically this, so that everybody hears and the tape can get your question, is just come to the microphone right here and ask that question at that time.

You don't need to say who you are, what your name is, you can even fake your voice if you wanted to.

In the first session you were talking about how, that Jesus said to them wait until they receive the Holy Spirit, not 10 days, not 3 days, not 50 days, whatever.

And we have all of these programs in our church that I'm just saying sometimes I feel like we try and substitute them.

So how can we integrate these programs that I know some of them are very good with really getting the Holy Spirit, you know, the real live experience?

I'm not sure we can do much about it except for 1 thing we can do.

There is very little control we have over other people, but there is a lot of control we have over ourselves, more so than we think.

So if I have an attitude in my own life, private walk with God, that I am not going to say to God, Lord, if you don't do something for me in 5 days, I'm gonna move on to something else.

But if my attitude is, this is important to you, this is important for my life, I'm gonna stay at it until something happens, then I'm already practicing that in my own life.

And I believe, I really firmly believe that when we have that kind of an attitude, God will surround us with other people of similar attitudes.

You don't have just 1 person, you have other people who are also of the same mind who say, we're going to stay with this because this is important to God, and we're going to stay with it until something happens.

And then that can create a little bit of a domino effect.

You know, sometimes great things do not happen at the time we hoped that they would happen.

But that doesn't mean that great things are not happening behind the scenes.

In other words, God is at work in a major way, except that we cannot see it at that time.

But we need to have an attitude as if God were doing those major things.

And it's alright, well later we're going to see it today.

There's a number of statements how we really should pray.

Be honest with you, if your prayer life is close to what mine is often, it's pretty pathetic.

And we don't really know how to pray yet.

It's not serious enough for us to get serious about it and so we'll see some of that today.

I think that modeling or being sure that we are not going to give up is the first step to that.

And I think that God works out the details after that.

My question is, you're talking about the conditions and hindrances for the spirit filling.

What should the church do for leaders that are standing in the way of the Holy Spirit coming to the laity?

Briefly, we need to make sure We need to make sure we take seriously what it means to pray for our leaders.

Many times, or sometimes, we have an attitude, well, a leader is not being very open or receptive to what God's primary values might be, therefore I dismiss him.

That's not God's attitude, therefore it cannot be mine because then God can no longer use me on behalf of that person.

I need to ask God for a burden for those leaders.

The reason they're in leadership is, you know, I've been, and maybe I should say a word about it, I've been assuming that people know who I am, but that's not always true.

I'm the director of the North American Division Evangelism Institute, so I work for the division.

I teach full-time at Andrews, you know, at the seminary.

I have a full teaching load and we have about a 13 member staff member.

This is, Natty was what Mark Finley started in Chicago in 1979 as an evangelism training institute that moved to the seminary because now we do that training with the seminary students as well as people throughout the division.

So I traveled quite a bit and I was ministerial secretary before that.

What I was going to say is that I have been at fairly high levels of leadership engagement.

And I can tell you, and this has changed my thinking, I can tell you that the people that are in leadership of the church, there's all kinds, there are some that are very devoted followers of Jesus Christ, Serious saints.

But there is 1 common denominator and that is the great majority of them are incredibly hard-working.

There are, you know, many of them are very talented actually.

Otherwise they couldn't, they couldn't do all of the things that they're doing.

Now, that doesn't mean that everything they do is the right thing to do or is the timely thing to do.

But what I'm saying is that God has seen fit for those people to, He has allowed for that to happen.

Therefore we need to pray for those leaders so that God could maximize their potential because it's there.

In most leaders, Many of them are ministers who have become ministers because they have really answered a call from God to serve God.

Therefore, there is a real spiritual core there.

Sometimes it gets lost in the busyness of life, or for a number of reasons that we don't need to get into at this point, but it's there.

And that's what we need to pray for these people.

We need to advocate on their behalf as much as we can.

Now if they are clearly doing something against God's will, it'll become evident not only to you, but it'll become evident to a number of other people.

And God will use the body to bring that to a halt.

That doesn't mean we need to remain silent necessarily, but we need to be very careful because the Bible clearly teaches to be very careful.

It says, for instance, Paul says, do not allow any accusation against an elder to be brought lightly?

Biblically speaking, the pastor does not exist.

The only difference is the pastor today in the 21st century is an elder who gets paid full-time and most of the many times has had seminary training which the elders in the first century didn't.

Even in the first century elders, some elders got paid and according to Paul they got paid some of them because they were good teachers and that is 1 of the 2 major functions of an elder but that's leading me to other areas.

Anyway, so we need to really pray for them and try to support them and if they are really in the wrong we can ask for God to remove them but let God do that then because we need to be very careful to play the role you know God's role in that thing.
