The Time of Destiny

Father in heaven, we need your spirit, Lord, because he's the 1 who inspired the Word.

He is the 1 who carried men, holy men of old.

As they wrote down these words, It is the spirit that gives life.

And it is the spirit that will guide us into all truth according to Jesus' words and promise.

And so grant us this gift as we open the word of God.

And may this man who is but dust in your sight, may you use him to uplift Jesus very high and to increase our love for him who has given himself for us.

In Luke chapter 16, we're gonna beginning in verse 19, when you're there, you can say amen.

I know some people didn't have breakfast this morning.

So, get a little antsy during the sermon time.

Luke chapter 16 beginning in verse 19 begins another parable that Jesus gives in this chapter that Luke records.

Now he just gave 1 about the unjust steward.

And for those of you who, for some reason, because of medical injury or lack of transportation, did not come to Tuesdays with Jesus, amen.

That's the only reason why you shouldn't be at prayer meeting.

You need to be at prayer meeting, gathering with the saints in the middle of the week.

Anyway, we looked at the fact that this steward that Jesus talked, told this parable about a rich man.

It's kind of like an accountant who manages your affairs.

Back in those days, you know, you'd have different goods that you would manage and this steward was wasting his master's goods He was accused by some third party that we don't know of but the Bible already tells us that the accuser of our brethren is Satan right so we know who's doing the accusing The devil will lead you to do foolish things and then accuse you to God.

But the devil was there the whole time, encouraging you alone.

So he accuses this steward to God, and as a result of this, the rich man brings the steward and says, what is this that I'm hearing about you?

So he begins to think to himself, what am I going to do when I get fired?

So he says, you know, to beg, I'm ashamed.

And he's like, you know, I'm not about to dig.

So his pride compels him to do something that Jesus says is shrewd, is wise.

So he decides to go to his master's debtors and he says, listen, how much do you owe my master?

Then how much do you owe, 80, okay, write down 50.

They go over the books, compare the accounts.

But then after he was fired, the Bible says the man commended the unjust steward.

Why would he commend a man who has not been faithful?

Well what happens is when the man gets fired and he has no place to live, because back in those days your steward would live with you, where does he go?

Well He comes over there knocking at Rodney's door, and he's like, hey, Rodney, you know I just got fired?

So I'm wondering, do you think I could stay with you?

Rodney's like, you know, me and the kids, you know, Zimbabwean, we're a big family.

And we don't have a lot of space, well, you remember that bill, right?

So I, you know, it'd be great if you could do me a favor, as I did you a favor, and give me a place to live.

But the Bible says he did that with each and every single 1 of his master's debtors.

So how long will he have a place to live?

He made friends because his Master's goods were still in his hands.

And he used them to plan for the future so that they would receive him into their homes.

But Jesus takes this point and says, now this is what I want you to do.

I want you, this parable is for his disciples, by the way.

I want you to make friends with the unrighteous mammon that they, now that's 1 of those pronouns, plural pronouns, you're like they, who is they?

That they may receive you into an everlasting habitation.

So who is it that lives in an everlasting habitation?

People who are resurrected, we don't even know who they are, but they're living there.

And all we see in this everlasting home is the fact that by using the things that have no heavenly good unless they're used for heavenly purposes, These things for heavenly purposes, he says, when you get to the gates of heaven, they'll say he's a friend.

But you don't want to be at the gates of heaven.

In joining in God, the Spirit and angels to minister to the afflicted, to the poor and to the wounded, and the sinful, He says, make friends.

So here we have Jesus encouraging the fact that I'm not encouraging you to be unjust or dishonest.

I'm encouraging you to learn from the man's wisdom that he lived now to prepare for the future.

He secured his future by what he did today.

Lewis, those who have been the greatest good in this life were those who were most consumed with the world to come.

Those who have been the greatest good in this life have been the most consumed with the world to come.

And so Jesus gives another parable in this chapter that is still on the same theme, but addresses it from a completely different perspective.
