As I told you yesterday, I'm a Tennessee girl, but I've spent more time in Michigan than I have in Tennessee.

And I've enjoyed so much all the other presentations that's been going on, and I can see how there's a weave, there's a thread through the things that we are talking about in these seminars.

How much stress do you have in your life?

If you were to do the scale from 1 to 10 and 1 is no stress, 10 is stressed out, how many of you are below 4?

You know, it's interesting that there's a few people that are around us who don't seem to be so stressed out in this crazy busy world.

It would be interesting to understand the paradigm of someone who doesn't feel the craziness of stress.

There's a handout I would like for you to pass out.

But I come to you from Michigan Conference.

What our business is at Lifestyle Matters is to provide programs and materials so that you can go out and share with your community.

You do not have to be a health professional to use a lot of the programs that we have.

And so I'll be showing you another DVD today with Dr.

Skip McCarty, who is an authority on stress, who actually lives in the Berrien Springs area.

So we'll hear from another expert as we talk today.

As you came in, there were some handouts.

There's a leaflet that tells you all the materials that we have available.

I'd like for you to pick up a Balance magazine, and we also have some small Balance tracks.

These are little tracks that are very inexpensive that you can share with in your life.

But there are other balanced magazines, there are 12 different ones.

There's 1 called, Is What You're Eating Eating You?

And that's kind of our topic today on perhaps there's some things that we're consuming that's causing us stress.

There's 1 on depression, the way out, where we feature Dr.

These are all pertinent to the topics that we're going to talk about today.

But the 3 programs that have been developed, I'm kind of taking material from a couple of them today just to show you a little bit about what you can use from these materials.

Once they're in your hands, you can do with them what you need to for the audience that you are serving.

So we hurry, we worry, and then we bury, don't we?

There are different chemical things that can cause stress.

Some of the foods that we intake, and we talked about sugar yesterday.

Today we're going to learn a little bit more about fats and what that is doing and causing stress.

The caffeine, the alcohol, the drugs, this causes stress.

When we don't get enough sleep, when we have injuries, when we have a disease process that causes stress on our body.

We also have emotional stresses in our life.

There is divorce and death and job changes.

It also comes in environmental forms like pollution and noise.

And then there's spiritual stress, like guilt over wrongdoing, like a sense of neglected duty, like harboring anger or judging, or grudges.

But all of these things can create the same stress response.

It's when your hormone cortisol is increased, the fats and sugars go into your system really fast, and your body gets ready that if you are injured, you won't bleed to death, so it kind of thickens up the blood a little bit, and your senses are more keen.

And this is a good thing on a short-term basis, but when it's chronic, and it happens every day, every day, every day, it starts to play a toll on the body.

So the cortisol is released from the adrenal glands, and, which is right above your kidneys, but this is, the message is sent from the hypothalamus to the pituitary and then to the adrenal glands and says, we've got a problem.

And initially, this is a good thing because it gives you the extra energy that you need.

It helps to convert the glycogen into mobilized energy.

And it also enhances the immune system short term.

So you can have what you need right up front.

But when it happens over a long period of time, it starts to affect the body in a lot of diverse ways.

So it helps to mobilize the fats, mobilize, but when it starts, when cortisol starts to mobilize the fat, it actually tells it to go to the middle.

You see a lot of mid-body fat, and some of that is highly related to the amount of stress that we have.

Why does the body say, send fat to the middle under stress situations?

So it's initially a protective thing, but we happen to have too much protection around the middle.

And in the mid-body fat, there are 4 times more cortisol receptors, and so it just kind of breeds more ability for more fat to accumulate.

So that is 1 of the issues with the mid-body fat, and that seems to be 1 of the best indicators of are we in shape or not, is just to get out a measuring strip and say, you know, how big a round am I?

The cortisol also regulates chemicals and hormones that control the appetite, so when we have high cortisol levels, it dysregulates the appetite hormones, the lipton and the ghrelin.

So you kind of go for the fats and the sugars.

The high cortisol levels can compromise brain function.

It can suppress the immune system when it's chronic and it happens every day, every day, every day, and it can cause cellular and tissue alterations.

So this can increase risk of all the different lifestyle diseases when we have high amounts of stress.

But the brain is what we are concentrating on and there are cognitive changes in the brain with chronic stress.

It can also change our weight, but the amount of stress that we have really depends on how we respond to them.

2 different people can be in the same situation.

1 have a high amount of stress and 1 not so much.

Steve, do you get stressed when you get up and speak?

A little bit, but you're pretty, you know, pretty comfortable.

I mean, would anybody else find it pretty stressful to get up and speak?

There are some people that say, give me a crowd, I'm ready.
