Over here at this tree, you can have it your way.

You know, God made all this good food for us, but he said if we eat from this tree, if we eat from this tree, if we eat from this tree, we'll die.

And I know all you theology people are knowing that I'm doing something to the story.

Can I do it my way?" And you know the first time gave, Scott, he was telling us that the first time something in the Bible is used that has some significance?

The first time gave is used in the Bible is Genesis 129 where God gave the gift of food.

It was a, don't you just love sitting down and eating good food?

And when God gives a good gift, what happens on the other side?

Satan goes, how can I start twisting this around, right?

Would you turn with me to the story of Daniel?

When we look at, in Daniel, We see Daniel 1, 7.

The chief official, no, I'm sorry, it's on up.

The king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine from the king's table.

Does anybody have the word gave in there?

The king knew that if he could get those boys to eat from his table, to drink his wine, and to live that lifestyle, he would have him in the palm of his hand.

In Daniel 1, 8, it said, Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, but asked permission for another way.

In some Bibles it says He purposed in his heart.

What do you think that means, he purposed in his heart?

Back, you know, when he was growing up, perhaps he heard the prophecy from Isaiah that, you know, Babylon would come in and take these boys away.

And so as he walked that 500 miles to Babylon with all the young men that were taken.

I'm wondering if he began to purpose in his heart on his way there that he was going to serve God.

And So when he was encountered with this choice, what am I going to do when I'm in this situation?

We've learned that when we watch things on the screen, that the same areas of the brain light up as if we do them.

But even thinking those thoughts light up the same areas of the brain light up as if we do them.

So the more times we think in a positive way, the more likely we are to do the positive thing.

Before you go out to eat, you think about where you're going and what you're going to choose before you get there, and you're more likely to make the right choice, Rather than just showing up, looking at the menu and going, I'm starved, what am I going to eat?

That's kind of a dangerous time to make some of those decisions.

But he purposed in his heart, he thought about it.

And we see that if we didn't have Daniel 1, we wouldn't have the rest of the book.

There's a lot of lessons for us to learn right there in the first book of Daniel.

Your lifestyle is a story of who you are and the God that you love.

What's your story that you are sharing with the world?

A couple of years ago, I read these 2 books and they are authored by Dr.

And he was looking at the history of Adventism and what was going on during Ellen White's day when God gave this amazing message of health.

In 1840, there was a doctor, Smizelweis, and he worked in a maternity ward.

They would do their autopsies first and then they would go examine the women.

The women who were examined after the autopsies were more likely to die.

He said maybe we should wash our hands before we go from autopsies to examining the women.

And when they started washing their hands between the procedures, the death rate dropped.

But the physicians were tired of this bother of washing their hands, so they fired him.

He went on to Budapest to another maternity ward, and there he carefully documented his work in a book.

But the medical field was not ready for all this bothersome washings, and he again was ridiculed and removed from his position at the hospital.

He died in a mental institution with the memory of all the unnecessary deaths of those mothers weighing heavily on his mind.

Now in the 1800s, 1840, This was a concept.

They didn't know about germs or bacteria or any of this stuff.

Medicine as a profession was so chaotic and the supportive medical knowledge so primitive that epidemic after epidemic continuously killed off many of those who somehow managed to outlast the doctor's care because the doctor's care were killing them.

As the 19th century dawned, Americans lived a very unhealthful lifestyle with little concept of hygiene and even worse diet.

They bathed little and ate large amounts of meat and fat and few fruits and vegetables.

The practice of medicine at that time was of little help in dealing with the resulting health problems.

The existence of germs was not demonstrated until Pasteur did it in the mid-19th century.

George Washington's last deathbed wish was to allow to be died without them doing anything else doing, because he had had all these bleedings And they were giving him poisons.

And finally he said, let me die in peace.

Some of the common practices, they would smother the, they would close all the blinds and they would cover the people.

They would do the bleeding, you know, that was supposed to get the poisons out.

And then their medicines at the time were poisons.

Well here we have Joseph Bates come along.

And you probably know some of the stories of Joseph Bates.

And the Holy Spirit convicted him to stop drinking alcohol, and later to stop smoking, and later to stop drinking tea and coffee.

The Holy Spirit inspired him step by step for a more healthful lifestyle.

When Bates was asked about not eating or drinking certain foods, he'd say, well, I've just had my share of them.

But he didn't make it very public at that time, and he wasn't preaching about this in his sermons.

Looking at a timeline of what was going on, in the 1600s, Dr.

Harvey discovered the circulation of blood.

In 1851, Ellen received her vision on cleanliness, that we should bathe, that we should have clean clothes.

In 1860, Louis Pasteur identified microorganisms, but it wasn't connected with disease at that time.

And in 1863 was the amazing health message was given to Ellen White, her main vision on health.

In 1865, A couple of years later, bacteria, it was found by Joseph Lister that bacteria caused wound infections.

And then it wasn't until the 1870s that it was proven that bacteria caused disease.

So this health message was given at a very crucial time when people did not understand about health and cleanliness.

So in June 5th in 1863, there were some tent meetings in Otsego, Michigan.
