And the men of the city said unto Elisha, Behold, I pray thee, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my Lord seeth, but the water is not, and the ground barren.

And he said, Bring me a new cruz, and put salt therein.

And he went forth unto the spring of the waters and cast the salt in there and said thus saith the Lord I've healed these waters there shall not be from since any more death or barren land So the waters were healed unto this day according to the saying of Elisha which he spake." You know we get accustomed to a lot of miracles from the Old Testament days and we don't stop to realize always that Jesus Christ is the same today.

They had a school of the prophets over there near Jericho.

The land of Jericho was the land to which Lot pitched his tent, that well-watered land of Sodom in the area.

And then when God destroyed Sodom, It became a wilderness largely.

But in the days when Israel went across the Jordan to Jericho, there was an area there in Jericho that had plenty of water.

But Joshua uttered a prophecy after Jericho was destroyed.

He said, cursed is the man that will build this city because Jericho was the center of the idolatrous worship of Ashtoreth, the most licentious form of worship, degrading form of worship.

It's well to remember what kind of a place it was when it comes to the miracle in a few minutes.

And he said the man that will arise cursed is a man that arises and builds this city in his firstborn and puts up the gate in his youngest And that was fulfilled.

You'll find it over in the Book of Kings.

But in the days of Elisha, there was a school of the prophets not far from Jericho.

And the people in Jericho were most undeserving.

But this little school of the prophets outside of Jericho was the object of Elisha's visit.

And while he was visiting there and giving his regular instruction, 1 or more of the leaders of the city came to him and they said, this is a very pleasant place, but the spring that's been feeding this city now has become very putrid.

And would you come to our rescue and Elisha went over and he said yes get me a little salt put in a cruise of water and I'll put this salt into this spring and the spring was healed.

It became very fruitful, a land of date palms, of fruit, and many kinds of wheat and a luxurious place.

Now why in the world did the Lord through Elisha perform this miracle for a city that was completely undeserving?

What about these conditions to answered prayer?

We have listed in our little book, Science of Prayer, we've listed 12 general conditions to prayer.

Then we've listed 7 more conditions to soul winning answers.

So we haven't overlooked the conditions to answered prayer.

But here is a people who deserve absolutely nothing.

They are in a condition that's abhorrent to the Lord, and they come to God's child, God's messenger, God's prophet, will you come to our rescue?

Now, these are Israelites, remember, who have been contaminated with the sins of the nations around them.

And Elisha goes down and answers, God answers their prayer through Elisha, and the water is healed.

Why in the world would the Lord do a thing like that?

For people who are completely undeserving, he gives them water.

Might it be the same 1 of whom Jesus spoke when he said, the Lord sends the rain on the evil and the good, the sunshine on the just and on the unjust.

Could it be that He was saying to His people Israel, look, just like I've healed this water, So I want to heal your spiritual malady, and I'm waiting to do it.

God is eager, friends, to come to our rescue.

No matter how unworthy any heart this morning may feel, God is eager to have us come and say, Lord, I've been drinking of a putrid water.

Even though I'm an Israelite by name, I certainly haven't been living the life that I should live.

I've been drinking in of the abominable TV pictures, radio, sordid stories, where sin is made pleasant.

Sin ceases to be looked upon as sin because so much fun is associated with it.

I've been reading stories, dear Lord, that do anything except to bring me happiness and peace and joy Why in the world do I continue?

I'm thirsty But then the devil comes along said listen you've done so many things that are so wrong, so long, you have no right to expect anything of God.

But thanks God I know a name, a wonderful name, through whom we can come, unworthy though we may be.

And we can say, Lord, a God that would do this for those unworthy people.

You can change my supply of water from the putrid streams of earth, and you can give me the waters of salvation.

And Isaiah wrote, Isaiah 55, 1, Ho, everyone that thirsteth, come ye to the waters and drink.

Come, buy wine, milk, without money, without price.

It's just as free to you as it was to these unworthy inhabitants of Jericho.

Don't let the devil tell you that you can't find access to the waters of life.

And if we have some question about it, turn to the fourth chapter of the book of John and see whether God is looking down his nose at us because of mistakes we make.

Jesus with his disciples came over there to this well, Jacob's well, and we're not going to read the whole story.

Just going to notice something about how these waters are provided for a sin-sick heart.

And notice Jesus came there, and as he came, and his disciples went into the city to get some food, there, verse 7, cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water.

For his disciples were gone away from the city to buy meat.

Then said the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria?

For the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.

Jesus answered and said unto her, listen to this, friends, if thou, and think of it as though he was speaking to you personally and me personally, if thou knewest what?

If thou knewest the gift of God and who it is that saith to thee give me to drink thou wouldst have asked of him and you would have given thee the living waters the living waters of salvation he offered to this woman who was she a little later in the narrative, he said, go and call your husband.

And very kindly, Jesus said, you have said correctly, you don't have a husband.

And the man with whom you're living is not your husband.

And the way he let her know that he knew to whom he was offering salvation free of charge was a woman in that situation.

To whom is our Lord offering the waters of salvation?

To those whose sins are as scarlet, to those that are completely as undeserving as was the city of Jericho, as was the woman of Samaria.

And you know, when Jesus was through talking with her, he didn't have his disciples cuddle about him and say, you ought to see what kind of a thing she was.

She has been married 5 times and she is now living out of wedlock.

But do you know there are plenty of professed saints of God who do that.

Can you imagine the life that person is living?

What we're talking about is Christ's attitude towards sinners.

He admits you did have 5 husbands you are living in sin I offer you still free of charge my free gift of salvation that's Jesus Christ thank God for such a Savior what do you think but you know my friends there are a lot of people who think about that miracle of the healed waters of olden days and they just don't realize that Jesus Christ is doing both healing of physical water and of the spiritual water today.

We're holding a series of meetings down in the southeast.

Because you know, our favorite author says that as we share what God has done for us, as we've claimed his promises, and it uses that term, This is the witness for which the world is dying.

For the witness of how we've tested his promises and found they're true.

So we were sharing them and inviting people to share with us.

Don't come and talk to us about it, because I can't remember.

Put down a tape and send it to us, or write it in a letter.

And as we were sharing in that particular church, a lady came to me.

She said, I have an experience, a very humble lady, very, very sweet saint of God, and let me interrupt myself just now by stating that I was telling an experience this morning to the young people and 1 of the little folks said, is that a true story?
