Who Shall Be Able To Stand?

It's a privilege to be able to speak here at Advent Hope to open the Word of God together and I hope you're not expecting a sermon or to be preached at this morning.

I hope you came to say the Word of God together.

It's more of a Bible study basis and we'll learn as we go.

But definitely we want the Holy Spirit to guide us and not to be my words.

So before we begin, let's have another word of prayer.

Dear Heavenly Father, Lord, we thank you for protecting us through this week and bringing us to the Sabbath day.

Thank you for those who are here in this house, Lord, we ask your Holy Spirit to to come and descend upon us, Lord, guide our hearts and our minds and lead us in your word that we might to leave this place closer to you.

We pray for those who are at the Mountain Church that you would bless and protect them as well.

And Lord, we pray that we might leave this place with a Sabbath-based blessing we might share with those throughout the week.

We ask these things in Christ's precious name.

How many of you are looking forward to the soon return of Christ?

Well, it's a thrilling hope that we have.

But There's a certain section in scripture that describes Christ's return in very solemn words And I'd like to start there in Revelation chapter 6 starting in verse 13 Revelation chapter 6 Starting in verse Verse 12 actually Revelation chapter 6 and verse 12 The sixth seal, it's just being opened here.

The Bible says, And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and lo, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood.

And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.

And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together, and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.

And the kings of the earth and the great men and the rich men and the chief captains and the mighty men and every bondman and every free man hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains and said to the mountains and rocks, fall on us and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb for the great day of his wrath is coming who shall be able to stand so in this we have the the solemn description of events just before the coming of Christ.

We see 1 group who is not exactly looking forward to the return of Christ.

Calling for the mountains and rocks to fall on us and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, from the wrath of the Lamb.

So there will be a group of people when Christ comes that they're not exactly looking forward to that.

It's going to be a not a pleasant time when that happens for them.

And then the great question in chapter 17, this would be the title of today's message For the great day of his wrath has come and who shall be able to stand When Christ comes who is going to be able to stand in his presence?

That's the question that we're going to be trying to answer as we go through the Word of God today.

I think we know the group of people who will be standing.

Revelation goes on to give us the answer in chapter 7.

The next group of people you see standing after that profound question is in Revelation 7 verse 9.

It says, And after this I'll be held in lo a great multitude which no man could number, of all nations and kindreds and people and tongues, stood before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes and palms in their hands.

There will be a group of people who will be standing in the presence of God when Christ returns.

In Revelation 6 and verse 16, those who were crying to the rocks and mountains that have fallen on us, they are saying, Hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne and from the Lamb.

This group who's standing, they're standing where?

Standing before the throne and before the Lamb.

We know this is talking about the 144, 000.

Early in Revelation 7, it talks about those who have received the seal of the living God.

And we know the different characteristics of this group.

We know that going down to Revelation 7 and verse 14 says that these have come out of great tribulation, so it's the second half of verse 14, and have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

Other places in Revelation you find that these follow the Lamb, follow Christ with us wherever He goeth.

These keep the commandments of God and the testimony and the faith of Jesus Christ.

So these are characteristics that we already know.

What I've studied this morning is to look at the quality of standing.

What does the Bible mean by those who will be standing when Christ appears?

And so this is where I hope all of you brought your Bibles this morning.

We'll be going through and seeing how the Bible unlocks this so we understand better what it means to stand, who will be standing, And how can we stand when Christ appears?

We'll go to the book of Malachi, chapter 3.

And so you see the concept of standing is a theme throughout the Bible.

Malachi chapter 3, it's the last book of the Old Testament, starting in verse 1, and the Bible says, we're all there, Behold, I will send my messenger and he shall prepare the way before me.

And the Lord whom ye seek shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant whom ye delight in.

Behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts.

But in verse 2, we see that question repeated, almost the same question.

For he is like a refiner's fire and like fuller's soap.

And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he shall purify the sons of Levi and purge them of gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness." So almost the exact question is posed in Malachi.

Again, the last book of the Old Testament has that question, the last book of the New Testament, same question.

Because when Christ comes, he's coming as a conquering king.

He is coming in all his glory, and for those who are not ready, He is a consuming fire.

So it behooves us to know how we can stand when He appears.

We'll go through, go back to the book of Psalms.

And there's many other places in the Bible you see the concept of standing.

So according to Malachi, those who are purified, that purifying process before Christ comes will be standing Psalms 130 verse 3 All right, I guess I need to catch up with all of you now Good thing there in time.

Psalms 130 verse 3, the Bible says, If thou, Lord, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?

If the Lord markest iniquities, mark means to remember.

Now we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

We all have iniquities that have been on our past record, but coming to Christ and allowing His blood to cleanse us from sin, we know that we have confidence that He forgives us and cleanses us from all unrighteousness.

But those who have their iniquities remembered are those who never confess them.

And ultimately, those who will be standing when Christ appears are those who have had their sins, through the mercies of God, through the new covenant, have had their sins blotted out.

That's the promise of God in this new covenant.

He'll even blot them out, erase them from even his memory.

So those who have their sins blotted out and not marked will be able to stand.

Thou, even thou, art to be feared, and who may stand in thy sight when once thou are angry?

Again, that same question we're looking at, and we're going to get to the answers here.

This next Psalm, Psalm 24, 3, this verse will actually give us the question plus the answer in the same 1.

Starting in verse 3, Psalms 24 in verse 3.

Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord, or who shall stand in his holy place?" Same question.

In verse 4, "'He that hath clean hands and a pure heart, who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully, he shall receive the blessing from the Lord and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
