Bible Study on the Judgment and the 2300 Days

Father in heaven, thank you for this beautiful Sabbath day.

Thank you for giving us the privilege of studying from the Bible and looking deeper into the things of God that will Prepare us to be ready to meet you when you come in the clouds of heaven.

And I pray that your coming would be very soon and that you would live out your life in each 1 of us so that we may spread the message of your character and love to this world around us.

I am very excited to be here and to study some things with you this afternoon.

I just got back from a trip to Boston, Massachusetts for some medical meetings and while I was there I took the opportunity to go to the roots of our message up to Washington, New Hampshire over to William Miller's farm.

Over at Washington, New Hampshire, they've built a Sabbath trail, which is something new from when I was there last.

So you can go through about a mile-long trail through the woods of New Hampshire.

And it's a trail that has 31 different stops along the way, which talks about the story of the Sabbath from creation to the second coming.

And it goes through the time of creation, and through the time of Israel and their apostasy, and then the time of Christ, how he restored the Sabbath.

It goes through the Dark Ages, then it goes through the Millerite movement, and talks about the battle between the Sabbath and the issue of worship in the last days.

And then I was able to go over to William Miller's farm after that.

It's just, it's really inspiring to go back to see the places where this message first started.

And what's interesting if you think about it, this message really took off and got started in New England.

Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Eastern New York, Boston, Massachusetts.

And interestingly enough that is the same geographical location of the rise of the United States of America.

We fought for our independence when the Revolutionary War, 1 of the key battles was in Boston.

I saw some of that while I was there as well.

And it's not a coincidence that geographically the two-horned lamb-like beast of Revelation 13 came to prominence in New England and the message that would start this second advent movement also came to prominence in New England.

So if you ever get a chance to go to that part of the country I would highly recommend going to those places of Adventist historical interest.

Now what I'm going to be doing today is going through a hopefully a fresh look at the concept of the judgment the cleansing of the sanctuary and how it relates to us as God's people in the end of time.

And I wanted to read just a few quotes to start our Bible study this afternoon.

She says here, a message that will arouse the churches is to be proclaimed.

Every effort is to be made to give the light not only to our people but to the world.

I have been instructed that the prophecies of Daniel and the Revelation should be printed in small books with the necessary explanations and should be sent all over the world.

Our own people need to have a light placed before them and clearer lines.

What we are told here is that it's the prophecies of Daniel and Revelation that need to be taken to the world.

They're not just for us to talk about on Sabbath afternoon and and break down, they're actually for the whole world because after all this is a worldwide message.

And going on, she says, those who eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of God will bring from the books of Daniel and Revelation truth that is inspired by the Holy Spirit.

They will start into action forces that cannot be repressed.

The lips of children will be open to proclaim the mysteries that have been hidden from the minds of men." So do you think having an understanding of the book of Daniel was important.

Because we are told here that those who eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of God, what's that describing?

That's describing the experience of those who have a sanctified walk with God.

That of course comes from the Gospel of John that where Jesus says, "'Eat my flesh and drink my blood, ' that means to take in the whole life of Christ.

And we are told that those who eat the flesh and drink the blood of the Son of God bring from the books of Daniel and Revelation truth that is inspired by the Holy Spirit.

Now we sometimes get into ruts when we study the book of Daniel and Revelation.

We go through the same explanation of the 2300 day prophecy and we need to understand that.

But what we need to understand more clearly is what is it about the 2300 day prophecy that's relevant to my life today for how I am to live to be ready for Jesus to come and to prepare others.

So that's what we're going to try to look at today and then going on.

Many of the prophecies are about to be fulfilled in quick succession.

Every element of power is about to be set to work.

Past history will be repeated, old controversies will arouse to new life, and peril will beset God's people on every side.

Intensity is taking hold of the human family.

And then she says, study revelation in connection with Daniel for history will be repeated.

And notice this, we, with all our religious advantages ought to know far more today than we do now so we really should know more and That's why we're here today and I'm glad to see each 1 of you here.

I hope that each 1 of us will learn something new today.

We don't want to just be going over the same things over and over again, but we want to be learning new truths that will solidify our experience with God so we will be ready for the last days.

And I'll just read 1 more sentence, as we near the close of this world's history the prophecies relating to the last days especially demand our study.

And that is what we are going to do today.

Now I just read from an inspired source Ellen White but let me give you another inspired source and that is Jesus himself Matthew 24 verse 15 Jesus says when you therefore shall see the abomination of desolation "'spoken of by Daniel the prophet, "'stand in the holy place, "'whoso readeth, let him understand.'" So Jesus is telling his disciples then and telling us now, the book of Daniel is a book that he wants us to read and understand.

And if you understand also the book of Revelation chapter 10, Jesus is the mighty angel holding open that little book, the book of Daniel, that he wants us to understand.

So what I'm going to do is start off by mentioning this.

The book of Daniel, if you study the history of how prophetic faith was understood, people started taking the prophecies of Daniel more seriously in the mid to late 1700s and 1800s.

And there were a number of people that were studying these prophecies.

William Miller was not the only 1 who had a belief of the 2300 days ending around the time of 1843.

If you study it out, there is actually a number of people.

Dates varied from 1843 to 1844 to as late as 1866.

And they all believed in the literal year for day principle and they believed that it began roughly in the same time period.

If you think about it, the fact that you had people that agreed that it would end somewhere between 1843 to 1867 is not that bad.

There was variance of opinion on what the starting point was.

But the thing that I want us to pay a special attention to, what I've done here is I've put up a diagram of Daniel 2, 7, 8 and Daniel 10-12.

Of course, Daniel 2 is the first prophecy of Daniel, Daniel 7 is the second, Daniel 8 is the third.

And then Daniel 10-12 is 1 continuous prophecy, starting in chapter 10, ending in chapter 12.

And we're not going to go through the whole sequence of kingdoms.

I think most of us understand Babylon, Meda-Persia, Greece, Rome and its pagan and papal element.

The only thing that I'm going to make note of is that in Daniel 8, that is the first prophecy where Babylon is missing.

And the key thing to remember there is that Daniel chapter 8 is the chapter where the 2300 day prophecy is given.

And so what God wants people to understand is He wants it to be crystal clear for people to understand what kingdom the 2300 day prophecy starts.

Because Daniel chapter 2 we have Babylon being the head of gold, Daniel chapter 7 the lion is the kingdom of Babylon.

But then in Daniel chapter 8 you start off with the ram and the he-goat and then towards the end of Daniel chapter 8 the angel spells it out to Daniel what exactly those nations were the ram being Medo-Persia and the he-goat being Greece.

And the reason why is that the 20th hundred day prophecy begins in the kingdom of Medo-Persia.

And so that's why Babylon is missing in Daniel chapter 8.

And William Miller had this all diagrammed out pretty well.

And if you think about it, you know, we almost take for granted having an understanding of what these kingdoms are and what they represent.

But what William Miller did that was significant was most of the prophetic scholars of that time that were Protestant leaning all agreed on the first 4 kingdoms.

But what William Miller did that was unique was he took the last elements and synthesized them in a way that hadn't been done before.

For example, the stone hitting the image, the judgment sitting, the sanctuary being cleansed, Michael standing up, he linked all of those together in a very systematic way.

It's pretty impressive that he was able to do that, but of course if you read in Great Controversy it says Jules helped him and guided him as he studied, and I was actually in that room just 2 days ago.

And it's very fascinating to see the very spot of the room where he sat and studied for all those years putting this together.

Now, William Miller, around 1832, or even before then, he had come to the conviction that the world would end around 1843.

And he came to that conclusion through his understanding of the 2300-day prophecy.

And finally around 1831, 1832, he got the courage to go out and start preaching when he received the call from God.

And that's an important point just to make a quick note of is that sometimes perhaps some of us feel that we are ready to go out and give this message to the world but if you notice how William Miller got started he didn't go out and preach until God called him to do so and he kind of went and kicking and screaming but once he went into it he was used in a mighty way.

So William Miller starts preaching this message at the end of the world in 1843.

1 of course being that the 2300 prophecy ended in 1843.

They forgot about the fact that there was no 0 year between BC and AD.

They also didn't take into account that the beginning of the 2300 days started in the fall of 457 BC and so it wouldn't end until the fall of 1844.

And we're not going to go into this now, but Samuel Snudd does a very fine job of explaining the types and the anti-types between the Day of Atonement and the time of the Jews and the anti-type at the end of time.
