Witnessing With the Word

Let's bow our heads for a word of prayer before we begin.

Heavenly Father, more than anything, I want to be right with you.

I want to pray for forgiveness for speaking behind anybody's back.

Lord, I want to walk in your ways of righteousness.

I don't want to stand before your people as a hypocrite this morning.

And I am so thankful for the promises that we have in your word.

That you told us in 1 John 1, verse 9, if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

I thank you that we can stand before your throne, worthy, not because of our goodness, not because of our good deeds or right actions, but because we've been washed clean by the blood of the Lamb.

Father, I plead with you that your Holy Spirit would be here today, not because we deserve it, Father, but because of our great need.

We need you to, as it says in John chapter 14, we know that it says, But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, which the Father will send in my name, He shall teach you all things and bring all things to your remembrance whatsoever I have said unto you.

Father, we're praying that your Holy Spirit would rain down upon us, that you would teach each and every 1 of us from your Word, that you would convict us, as it says in John chapter 16, that the Holy Spirit does, and that you would speak to us in ways that I cannot.

You are our great God and Heavenly Father, and we thank you for your Son, Jesus.

I pray that he would be glorified through every word that I share, and may I not share 1 thing that shouldn't be said, and may I not hold back anything that should be said.

I'm going to share with you a bit about witnessing.

And I'm going to share with you a personal experience, not from me, but a friend of mine who shared this story with me.

My friend, his name is Omar, he's a Columbian.

And he went to do some mission work in Columbia.

I met him in the States, in South Dakota actually, and he went over into Columbia and he was doing some mission work and there he was going into an area that had what we would call guerrilla soldiers.

And as he was going into this area, these guerrilla soldiers captured him and his friend.

I don't know who the friend is, but nevertheless.

And so they got captured by these soldiers And these soldiers says, what are you doing here?

And they said, we're Seventh-day Adventists, we're missionaries, we're doing mission work in the area.

And they said, no, no, no, we're Seventh-day Adventists, we're just sharing the gospel here.

We're going to bring you to our leader, to their general, whatever you call them, the head of the guerrilla soldiers.

And so he brought them to their leader, and the leader, he was sitting there and he asked them, he came to them, however it was, and he said to them, he said, what are you doing here?

And they said, we're Seventh-day Adventists and we're doing mission work in here.

We're sharing the message of the Bible and the Gospel.

And The man said to them these words, this actually happened.

He said, if you are seventh day Adventists, then you will show me the 2300 day prophecy, or I will kill you.

Well, you'd break out your Bible and you'd open it to Daniel 8 and you'd share the whole study, right?

Well, the man actually, this is amazing, the man gave him some time, I believe, to go pray.

He opened up his Bible to Daniel chapter 8 and he gave him a study on the 2300 day prophecy, the prophecy of 1844.

At the end of that study, this guerrilla leader said to him, he said, now I know, now I know you are Seventh-day Adventists.

He made his soldiers go around to the area that they were doing their evangelism in, and his guerrilla soldiers went door-to-door and told everybody, you have to go to this evangelistic series.

God doesn't force anybody, but you know, somehow God can even strangely use a guerrilla leader, you know.

I don't know how it works, but it worked.

God uses us in very strange ways that we never would have imagined, that we couldn't have made happen if we wanted to.

God works in mysterious ways, very mysterious ways.

You know, my friend Andy, I grew up, I wasn't in this church, I grew up in the Christian Reform Church, Sunday keeping church, kind of a mainstream, kind of a somewhat conservative Christian church.

And my friend Andy though from a child was an atheist.

He was always an atheist, but he had the most godly parents I've ever seen.

I've seen at least as godly parents within this church, but I'd never seen anything like it before.

He told me, and maybe you all came from families like this, so this is just normal to all of you, but it wasn't to me.

He said, he said, my parents, he said, I have never 1 time ever heard them argue with each other.

There was always yelling in the house and whatnot.

And for all of you, you know, you just know that's normal in your house, right?

And, you know, maybe that's true for your house.

But like I said, it wasn't that way for me.

And, but yet, strangely enough, he grew up with the godliest parents that I had ever seen in my life at that point.

And yet, he was an atheist since we were in second grade.

I believed in God, I just didn't live for him.

And I always knew there was a God, but I just didn't live my life for him.

And long story short, God works mysteriously.

Andy and I met some girls, and 1 of the girls, Andy was an atheist, but this girl invited Andy to church.

And what does every good young man who's an atheist do when a girl invites him to church?

He goes Because he has such a heart for the right things, right?

Because he wants to get the girl and whatever it takes to get her, he's going to do it, right?

And this is a terrible story for that, I shouldn't even use it as an illustration.

Because strangely enough, Andy actually ended up giving his life to God at that church.

And it was genuine, because he got rid of the girl right after that.

But long story short, he came back to us, and we would hang out on the streets and whatnot, and he told us, we were out at a park, and he said, I can't hang out with you guys anymore.

He said, I can't live this lifestyle, I can't do the drugs, I can't drink, or whatever we were doing at that time, we had done drugs in the past together, but basically he said, I can't be drinking, I can't be living this lifestyle, And guess what?

Nobody told him he couldn't live that lifestyle.

He just knew when he gave his life to Jesus that those things, drinking and so forth, were not in harmony with the life of Jesus.

And so, long story short, Andy and I were out kind of, you know, we would talk to people and I ended up, because Andy gave his life to God, it was just, I knew that's what I needed.

You know, I was in college and every, actually I was in high school probably at that point and then into college and you know basically long story short I was in a situation where Andy and I were at some coffee shop and we met this guy who was an atheist and He challenged me He said so you're a Christian, huh?
