The AudioVerse App Goes Open-Source

Calling all developers!
3m read

When AudioVerse launched version 1.0 of our website back in 2005, it was two years before the first iPhone was released. It may be hard to believe, but back then smartphones as we know them didn’t exist yet! Devices with the capabilities of those we have in our pockets today were just a sci-fi dream and the concept of “mobile apps” would have just confused most people on the street. Fast-forward to today and smartphones and mobile apps have become woven into the very fabric of our modern-day existence. It seems these smart devices have become integrated into every facet of our lives.

This reality has a direct effect on AudioVerse.

For a long time now, there has been a clear trend in users accessing the AudioVerse library increasingly from mobile devices rather than browsers on computers. In fact, I meet people frequently now who have no idea that AudioVerse even has a website since their only interaction with us is through the app on their phone!

With this fact in mind, we knew that we had to focus our attention on our app. However, smartphone technology moves at a rapid pace and as a small ministry with limited resources, we face the very real challenge of adequately supporting the mobile app to make sure it keeps up with all the latest technologies and an ever-rising standard of excellence expected from even our most casual users---all while not breaking the bank. We realized we had to think of an effective solution that could meet these challenges without compromising the mission that God has placed upon AudioVerse to do.

The Solution is YOU!

When AudioVerse embarked on the initiative to build our very first app, we looked to the AudioVerse community for help and you helped us reach our fundraising goal in under a week! That’s why we are looking to our community for help this time again, but this time we aren’t primarily looking for money.

We are making our app open-source so that developers and non-developers alike can contribute to our next-generation iOS and Android apps for AudioVerse.

By making our React Native-based app open-source, the developers within our community can assist us in ensuring that the app is reliable, up-to-date, and a pleasure to use. But you don’t even have to be a developer to help! We get feedback from users all the time about bugs or features that they would like to see, and now you can submit your requests directly to us to contribute to making the app a better experience for all.
