Can you pray for us yes let us. Father we are so privileged to be able to study the Word this morning we ask rather for your guidance and for your instruction in Jesus promised that when he the Spirit of God is come he will guide us into all truth made the sweet sweet spirit do just that now as we open your word is our prayer in Jesus name him and. Go to Matthew chapter 23 verse 13 through 30 and Kalak you should read in from verse 13. Verse. But whoa to you scribes and Pharisees hypocrites for you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men for you neither go in yourselves nor do you allow those who are entering to go in whoa to you scribes and Pharisees hypocrites for you devour widows houses and for a pretense make a long prayers therefore you will receive greater condemnation woe to you scribes and Pharisees hypocrites for you travel land and sea to win one proselyte and when he is one you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves woe to you blind guy who say whoever swears by the temple it is nothing but whoever swears by the gold of the temple he is obliged to perform it fools and blind for which is greater the gold or the Temple that sanctifies the gold and whoever swears by the altar it is nothing but whoever swears by the gift that is on it he is obliged to perform it fools and blind for which is greater the gift or the altar the sanctifies the gift therefore he who swears by the altar swears by it and by all things on it he who swears by the temple swears by it and by Him who dwells in it and he who swears by Heaven swears by the throne of God and by him her sits on it Jaber strain 3 and Jonathan Aiken pick up their well to use scribes and Pharisees hypocrites for you. Of meant and as come in and have neglected the way they are matters of the law of justice and mercy and. You ought to have done without leaving the others undone blind guy blind guides who strain and swallow a camel woe to you scribes and Pharisees hypocrites for you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence blind ferrous whose 1st cleanse the inside of the cup and dish that the outside of them may be clean also well to use scribes and Pharisees hypocrites for you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful awkwardly but inside are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men but inside you're full of hypocrisy and lawlessness well to you scribes and Pharisees hypocrites because you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous and say if we had lived in the days of our fathers we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophet there I mean is a long passage but if you're following along it's a pretty heavy heavy passage I won't spoil what are some observations that you see right off the bat one being quite obvious. To one kind of macro one more specific one macro is just blasting them for doing things that look good but aren't actually you and I will really sticks out there is always verse 1515 of you travel land and sea to win someone and then when you do you make them twice as much of a son of hell as you are strong well. Yes about the teddy bear loving hippy Jesus this is. In the gunny here I mean I think this is a blast Jesus Yeah. Yeah you know we have to understand that Jesus here is trying to reach the leading religious class of his time yet and he has tried to reach them for a long time and they are in a situation where they understand well they think they understand the Scriptures they notice scriptures that memorized it and ultimately a living out all these things but he Jesus. Through all of that pretense and sees that the condition of their heart and the danger they are in and so he has to use these strong words to penetrate the pride that they are trapped in so Jesus is this is an action of love but he has to be strong to reach them in their condition and I mean that word is important just to capitalize on your point he says whoa to you that's repeated a bazillion times here you don't use that word today but he's not saying Shane to you shame to you in trying to rebuke him and blast in a negative way the whoa is a sadness Yeah it's sad for you and you're not getting it and so the blast is there redemptive blasting it. Was going to say I've heard 2 different I like audio books of this and you can have the like the super like Walter you know scribes and there is but can also do in time I think we might go and won't tell you no it's unfair to say but it could also be like well to you line guy and it's just like a pleading on like the kind you see like a more heart film Yeah I mean if you look at that even by the end when you get to verse 37 he says oh Jerusalem Jerusalem the one who kills the prophets and you know those are those who are Center how often I would I wanted to gather your children together as a hen gather search under her window that I met with its apex right there which I just run through slim to double double in the vocative as they say it was some juice about God calls your name twice something is up. Ok so we look at the pattern there and then what is actually Jesus saying there was there is a commonality in each of the examples that God uses about well when you get towards the end you see that he goes in verse $23.00 and he says whoa to you scribes and Pharisees hypocrites for you Pete Times have meant and this including And I've neglected the way to your matters of the law justice mercy in faith these you want to have done without leaving the others and so then he goes proceeds into an inside and out issue you cleans the outside of the cup we should clean inside a quote you are. Are nice beautifully decorated but yet inside you're dead men's bones so here we see that he's dealing with the outer inner experience of these religious leaders that he's addressing Yeah and just to harp on that little bit he's not even blasting them for doing these things on the outside it's just to the neglect. So we have this battle in our day a lot a lot of young people that we minister to they always say hey I want to be I want to be fake Have you ever and I want to have poems or a. Dick is what's on it so we say. Well what I want to know authentic and relevant I want to be real I don't want to be me and so the emphasis is and then just rightfully so but there's always on the inside and so and then there's other generations about hey we don't care what's going on the inside as long as it's on the height it has long everything is good on the outside that's all that other me with your inner junk Yeah we say it's generational but it also can be. The generation that's right which is more important. I would go to the 1st 2626 you go to 1st says Blind Fair see 1st cleanse the inside of the cop and outside of them may be clean also because it doesn't just say cleanse the inside of the cup full stop but it has cleanse it and then also the outside will be clean and so it's both of them both of them are important not to the exclusion of the other one where do you see what we see forms of faking fakery increase in within the church within in Christianity Well I mean think about it it's only show you think about you know when you're part of a church group or a youth group or something and it's like it seems as if certain behaviors are being exalted as high virtues and you say like oh this person doesn't do this and that's why they're like the leader and everybody respects them because you know in your heart that if I let these people know that I'm actually practicing this very thing that they're all exulting saying oh yeah you know if you do this or you don't do this then I'm going to hide it I'm going to pretend I'm going to fake because human nature wants to be accepted there's not a person alive that doesn't want to have a sense of belonging but when you feel like you're in a space within a religious group that I'm having to pretend you're going into falling into what they call the impostor syndrome where it's like Eventually I'm going to be found down they're going to find out that actually you're not that person so that you never really get the benefits even though you're faking it to make it right inside the group why why is it so bad what I'm getting for your so you guys are saying is both are really needed but you're pointing out Jesus says action order things that should 1st be inside and then yes I would access a pretty cool insight about what is so bad about just hey I just got Jesus is inside I don't go I don't have to worry about the outside what's wrong with that or I'll just deal with the outside and Jesus will deal with insight in his own time I let's not even talk about the inside of what's wrong with bifurcating those 2 I mean we are Greek mindset we like to separate things and categorize things yes I mean but from the middle. The Hebrew mindset is a wholeness all the suspect himself inside and outside it goes together you know when you specially look in the Old Testament it's not just talk about the Inside a lot but it's also a lot about action and so but in the he reminds of action and the heart it goes together you cannot separate the 2 like if you believe in something you will live a search but just maybe to add more information though here to the conundrum and he's talking to the fairest Yes guys these guys are Hebrew mindset I think I have mindsets Yes yes all and they're there bifurcating that to my thinking that maybe the issue is revealed in their lives yet is what happens when Yeah Ok yes yes I did not say so. So that I mean when you want to separate it like that I was unfair So yes that's what you get when you separate it so it's not like oh you shouldn't do that it's like you literally cannot it is impossible to separate them so if you are truly changed on the inside you have to be on the outside like you I just don't want to you can't you have to that's and I have to outgrowth of this happen yeah and to be even fair or right when you come back to the issue of the gospel if you're just purely depending on human nature and human ability and works then you're always going to focus on the one that you feel like you have the most control and power over to the neglect of the other but you see when you come to the Gospel and it's the recognition of Jesus that I need Jesus to do for me what I cannot do it works mindset that doesn't want to accept righteousness through Christ my faith is always going to gravitate towards external forms because I can control what I show I can control when I present almost like an actor on stage and yes what word hypocrite means exactly with a mask you know it's like well I'm going to do this why because we used to say you know when acting nice to do theater that hypocrisy pays complement to virtue so nobody pretends to be something that's not going to be rewarded externally right I'm not going to pretend to be hard when everybody's i we're all Christian here and so that's why I think the separation issue always arises. When come back after the break when a look at how does the inside impact the outside and what avenues as there's a fruit of the inside come out so stay with us. Has impressed been a blessing to you Do you have questions comments or feedback you'd like to leave us find us on social media by searching. On Facebook Twitter Instagram for you to while there join us like us comes up next the handle again is in 1st Bible states now back to the discussion. Welcome back we're going to go to another passage where Jesus is talking about the inside and outside and that's in some of the mass go to Matthew chapter 5 Matthew chapter 5 and Jonathan can you read some verses there. From verse 21 the one yes starting 21 you have heard that it was said to those of old you shall not murder and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment but I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cost shall be in danger of the judgment and whoever says to his brother Rocca shall be in danger of the council but whoever says You fool shall be in danger of hell fire it will stop. All right so especially Can you start reading from verse 27 yes you have heard that it was said to those of old you shall not commit adultery but I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart Ok so this is the theme really of Jesus a sermon and what's going on you know give us some sense of so it preaches this predicament preaching. It was talking about that issue that you might see of like murder or of adultery The issue is actually one of the heart and the same way you might have the reaction of someone committing adultery like that's the worst I want to marry someone that's the worst like now the actual like that's the that's the word I'm going to remember for the real of the law compatriots. So that the issue starts in the heart and the same way you would react to yourself like I can't believe I killed someone that should be the response of I Can't Believe I'm thinking this way and that that's how deeply it is not just I want to kill someone so I'm good now even our reactions on our thought patterns that is that to be guarded by Christ is really kind of inverting in verse 30 in the religion because religion is always about x. trying to change an extra hour which it's humanly possible to do extra will change you I went on to a visit a can't say which country a former communist country and they were saying we have no need for your religion we have no adultery here we don't live here we don't have any cheating here and I'm like how is it like oh we are government pushes us for righteousness we achieve purity because if you commit any of these things you die right so there's this is just so we have no need of your religion but and in an extra no sense or like hey that's that's pretty crazy not in an internal sense I mean all these things are there but human beings can have made it down to an art and we have to we have to step away from this mindset that God wants more around to know God wants righteousness and righteousness is of the heart and that's where we come back to that you know that age old Christian him death is my. Hope is built on nothing less with Jesus' blood and righteousness right I dare not trust the sweetest but holy lino in Jesus' name that whole concept is trying to say that on Christ the solid rock I stand all of the ground the seeking since Will the government move you forward along that I do not. Have of course the whole idea here is that Jesus is establishing for them as he started the passage with his unit a righteousness greater than the fairest they have a great external behavior but internal is were true righteousness is found only Jesus can change and I want to flip to really quick as I will go to I say a 58 in the Old Testament as if you're just playing the other counterpart. Ok so yeah I mean I was like Of course it's all about the inside but there's also a value to the outside as well so I say $58.00 verses choose $34.00 and Jonathan if you don't mind reading those reverses yet they seek me daily into light to know my ways as a nation that did righteousness and did not for the sake of the ordinance of their god they ask of me the ordinances of justice they take delight in approaching God why have we fast at this and you have not seen why have we afflicted our souls and you take no notice in fact in the day of your fast you find pleasure and exploit all your labors indeed you fast for strive and debate and to strike with the fist of wickedness you will not fast as you do this day to make your voice heard on high Ok so how in a sense is this the counterpart both saying same thing but on the emphasis on another side the same way of so this there is an x. and externalizing of your faith and of your devotion to God and not doing that which is kind of what we said earlier I keep it to yourself like well I don't need to fasten to sacrifice something to even commune with God in any kind of meaningful way because God knows my heart and soul. But there are there are benefits even for ourselves not just because there is like the witnessing part right so you can see my face but even every acting up. On ourselves rights of externalizing what we have come to believe in right right and so let me and those are the source of the conversation from this point on where are areas that you we see in our generation today where we are like yeah it's all about the inside and I don't need to focus on the outside the church focused too much any outside and how we find that balance and some healing a biblical ground for all that. Kelly and it's about my mind goes straight to something that I think is very controversial for my generation and that is just how we dress how we how we look on the music we listen to and it does sometimes come as a backlash to have a church with the best thing someone has some people like that's not appropriate to go home and that's not the best we have about yeah but you issue those kind of situation yeah but exactly what the issue is still like of it is best to dress modestly and simply and tastefully and things like that and there is not merits like it makes us more like doesn't make Jesus love us more but there's a better way to present ourselves and present our faith but sometimes we would so burned by it this is like now it doesn't matter you can do anything yes like technically Yes Jesus loves you but like that's not the best and we're not here to what can I get away with but what is the best way to honor the God who crafted me and I think a lot of times we do just like oh God knows my heart honest my heart like he does cool but like so you're faced other people and I thought to sleep think it's when we don't want to to live by certain standards I mean if we don't understand then like we're going to stand them but if we just don't want to it just comes from a place of selfishness I want to do what I want to do and if you're judging me you're being judgmental and it's like no Jesus gave us these things because he wants us to live a better life and it's a selfishness that keeps us from no no I know a particular sister who who went to church in May The Korean subculture churches do this. She came and as a. As a author of how much we love you and care for you more paying attention to that we see you make comparisons to aware of what you're looking now to the last time they saw you so sister came in and you know the church ladies came like and so you Games so much weight since the last time I saw you which in the Western culture if you're familiar with you never do you live version of it. But if she got burned from experience Yeah and I'm sure you can we have a busy in other stories of other people got burned from and we have probably burned others I know I have I'm so sorry for those who burned by my dumb comments but anyway we've also been burned by other people you know the whole point of church and religion especially And as it is God Bible this whole thing is that every day we need to burn ourselves burn our eyes on Jesus not burn in and in a bad way but Jesus overwhelmingly becomes the center of our attention when we go to church and someone says you're fat you're skinny you're short you're tall your ugly like Ok Well God bless you and you move on because there's a there's a larger burn fact if you will. You're burning your retinas on the image of Jesus you. Know in the bottom 17 you know the hardest deceitful and wicked still desperately with desperately weak it really as you said we need the righteousness of Christ in our hearts me a transformation from the inside out but there is a tendency maybe more conservative circles of Christianity that you focus so much on almost being the monk on the inside on the inside that but you don't let it penetrate to the outside and you're constantly focusing on that you are instead of focusing on Jesus who wants to change you in that and so as you focus on Christ naturally things will change and he's promised that the Holy Spirit and the fus Spirit will come forth so these these changes that we talk about in dress and in the way we handle money and they way we have relationships they will come forth if we focus on Christ and so no it doesn't really is conservative thing to do I was going to say x.x. sounds more like the other side the left side of the church. Conservers are all about the extra analogy in a certain sense right but I mean both sides are wherever you are away from Jesus Yeah and he said Jesus in their life I went to one church and I said how dare you wear a tie in the presence of God you know just a comment as you are here all pretentious wearing it to. Another church without my ties or how dare you come to church without your time you know where your best so it's but the extra analogy is just an air reflection of what's going on I think that another area is the area of health. We oftentimes like to think that our health decisions are not something that is connected to our spirituality you know going with Here Comes out Ok honestly No I remember I was I was flying to a particular country I'm not going to name and when I arrived in country if you want to get in I was going to learn the lessons so when I arrived the pinger from the airport it was about 4 15 pm 5 pm And so we get in the car and they're like oh you know the Subash thank you so much for joining us. And we know that you don't eat after 5 o'clock so we did not have any dinner for you and I said Who told you I don't eat after 5 o'clock and they were like well we just assumed that you know in the Bible you know you want to have temperance and all things us like it's temperate. And so we're having this common and they're like Well Ok sure there's a subway here or there's a Chinese restaurant you know but Chinese is probably pretty kind of heavy at 5 o'clock and I was like no I want that you know. So it's like this whole you know it's so there's just this whole sense that yes health is an important element of our Yeah there's a long but I think sometimes it gets to the point where we believe in righteousness by tofu or you know it's like oh yeah as long as I'm eating this type of food. This is true I think that because I'm eating this way I'm going to get into heaven right you know there's going. Some of the Gives a vegetarian burning in hell Unfortunately not because of Jesus's lack of effort to see but because sometimes we're so focused on this element as if that is the very test that I should game the axis that's my Platinum card to get into the kingdom of heaven and at the same turn say different turn their mind anyway underside of sometimes we think that it doesn't matter that how we how we treat our bodies it's just kind of like well it's kind of what I crave that's what I want so like I'm going to live the way I want to but how how much taking care of our bodies actually enables us to have clear minds and serve God and I mostly just want to say this because I used to think it was like a necessary just the Hell of the health message and just like taking a body like yeah and I do think part of it that God has given us this again not just because I want you to eat this way I want you to live this way because it's good for you like it's good for you you actually enjoy life more but the same kind of stuff balance of like you're not saved by tofu but you can ism or buy broccoli but it's still you'll still have a better life if you do eat in a better way and ask yourself the question if we're not representing Christ on the outside who are we we're presenting what we have just in representing a question that seems to be almost like let's think about it again coming back to a relationship you know it's always ironic that I remember having a conversation with my wife recently and I'm saying only a baby and I will allow this and of course I'll support this and it was interesting that in my heart I'm saying I support this but my wife is like but that's not the behaviors and actions I'm seeing your actions suggest you don't support me but yet in your heart you're like Oh I support and so in the same sense as like how can other people who are watching my my relationships how can the person I'm in the relationship with be able to perceive and I think we do got an injustice because God sees me so he knows my heart but what about the people who aren't gone that can't see your heart how did they see that you actually love Jesus and how do they see you're making decisions because of that relationship and. Very the very times that I've made these big decisions have come from conviction I can take it from me in the Bible or something but then I see someone's life and I'm like man I want that and so God like confirming his words like look what this looks like and that's what even draws me to live my abundant life in Christ you know my my grandmother would always say if I could just be a mother. I leave better than I could hear right so she said you know your family is not all these little little sayings it was like something out here today write a book and you have a magnet on your refrigerator it was like Oh so that you took out the trash and you're like sitting there playing video games and you're like she didn't I think of the trash yes yes yes well I see better than I can hear you now I hear you saying you're going to take it out but I think the trash is a religion we struggle sometimes with putting those things that we believe in that are in the hearts to come from God into actions and it will encourage us in Philippians to 13 it's for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure God wants to empower us to bring forth the righteousness he pours into our hearts into actions in our lives and he gives us the problems that he will do it for us in his God that works in you comes out of you hopefully being blessed by today's conversation about God's will sometimes you get these excuses it's all about the Inspire it's all about the outside but we seeing it we're seeing a holistic picture not a great picture but a holistic great picture it's about the inside 1st coming out whether it's stress diet finances entertainment lifestyle or whatnot let's all represent Jesus Christ God bless you we'll see you next week here on in verse.
