This is the workshop entitled, Why is the New England Journal of Medicine Publishing on Prayer?

And they haven't published a lot, but it's interesting that they even address the topic at all.

Before we begin, I wouldn't dare talk about prayer without having a prayer.

So let's just bow our heads together and ask the Lord to bless this time.

Our Father in heaven, as we meet together this afternoon, we invite your Holy Spirit to be here.

And just as we are beginning to realize your calling on us as physicians and dentists and healthcare practitioners, I just pray that we will learn to use the tools that you have given us, and that as we discuss this hour, that we will learn how to effectively pray.

So we just pray, as your disciples did, that you would teach us how to pray.

I was going to make a copy of the New England Journal article, but published in 2004, God at the Bedside.

Not really a research article, but just a testimony of a physician, Jerome Groopman, who gives his story about how a patient who was dying of cancer asked him to have a prayer.

And it goes through all the things that he's very uncomfortable with this, although he considers himself a somewhat spiritual person.

He really doesn't have a prayer life and really didn't know what to say.

Wondered whether it was appropriate, whether it was ethical, and just talked about how physicians have a lot of clout and a lot of power over patients and whether or not we should even be engaged in this in the first place.

But what this illustrates is in 1 of the most premier journals, there's a recognition that prayer might be something that pertains to patients.

Nedley's session last evening, He put up an interesting slide, I was going to put that as well, but since it's been covered I haven't, but over 50% of patients pray regarding their health.

And the vast majority of them would actually welcome, in a national survey, the vast majority would actually welcome their physician having a prayer with them.

So I'm going to show a little video clip just to kick off this topic on prayer.

I don't know if any of you saw this, but this is a news program.

Hopefully it'll play, it's going to just stream off of YouTube.

His face, his arms, his legs were pitch black with death.

And I said, this man has been prayed for.

He has been brought back from the dead by prayer in the name of Jesus.

And a patient somewhere was raised from the dead.

A South Florida man pronounced dead from a massive heart attack, the man brought back to life.

His Doctor says this man was raised from the dead by a simple prayer.

Doctor, Chauncey Crandall isn't your usual doctor.

The world-renowned cardiologist is a man of medicine and science, but he's also a man of faith.

If you tell anyone the problem in Tarot service, we're going to definitely treat you with conventional medicine, but we're going to believe, too.

We're going to attack it with conventional medicine, and we're going to attack it with prayer.

He calls himself the Christian physician because he prays with each heart patient he sees at his Palm Beach practice.

Well, the reason I pray for people is because early on in my training I found out that there were miracles.

But even his strong faith couldn't prepare him for what would happen the day Jeff Markin walked into the Palm Beach Gardens emergency room.

I drove to the garden hospital, went in, got my wallet, and phone for the mass heart attack.

For 40 minutes, doctors and nurses in the ER tried to revive him.

When they couldn't get his heart started again, they called for Dr.

Crandall, who was doing rounds in the hospital at the time.

And as I entered the emergency room, it was like a war zone.

There was this lifeless body on a stretcher.

The doctor couldn't do anything and could only confirm what everyone already knew.

He had gone almost an hour without a heartbeat, and his body was starting to decompose.

And I said, well, let's just call the code.

Let's end it, because there's no life left.

Crandall turned to leave, he says he got another call.

A voice told me, turn around and pray for that man.

And I said, Lord, what can I pray for this man?

All of a sudden, these words came from my mouth.

Father God, I cry out for this man's soul.

If he does not know you as his Lord and Savior, raise him from the dead now.

Despite protests from doctors and nurses who were preparing Jeff's body for the morgue, Dr.

Crandall insisted they shot him 1 more time.

So that doctor came over with those paddles, It goes on a little bit, but for some reason it's pausing.

And I think that's a good place to pause.

Actually, as I looked at this video, which I got from my brother-in-law Bob, I looked at it about 5 times trying to figure out, well, is this real?

Is this something that the devil can do, is raise people from the dead?

This doesn't happen in my practice so far, praying with patients.

There's been times I've silently prayed that prayer as the patient's dying on the table as I'm working on them.

But what I wanted to use this video clip to illustrate is that prayer in the healthcare arena has just become a very popular thing.

We're going to look at a few more instances.

All of a sudden, there's an explosion in this.

So medical journals have looked at prayer.

Back in 1988, an article in the Southern Medical Journal was a somewhat controlled trial where, again, heart patients were either prayed for or not prayed for.

They all signed an informed consent that it would be okay to have intercessory prayer.

They didn't know if they were being prayed for or not.

There was a group of people that agreed to pray for these patients that never met them, weren't part of the healthcare team, that were just outside another institution.

And the finding of this trial was that the controlled patients required more ventilatory assistance, antibiotics, diuretics, and more frequently than the patients that were in the intercessory prayer group.

So this kind of sparked off A lot of other trials that were all of a sudden considering the effects of prayer, just like a clinical trial.

Another 1, the effects of remote retroactive intercessory prayer.

What they decided, that if God can answer prayer, God knows who's going to be prayed for.

So they actually picked a group of patients on a chart review, had a group pray for the patients, had another group of chart review patients that they didn't pray for.

And then they went back to look and see which 1 had the better outcome.

And in this trial, and this was all retroactive, patients were long gone out of the hospital, they found that there was a statistically significant improvement in the patients that were prayed for.

So they wanted to determine whether remote, retroactive intercessory prayer set for a group of patients with a bloodstream infection had an effect on their outcomes.

And they looked at 3, 393 patients between 1990 and 96.

And the only intervention that, in July, 2, 000 patients were randomized to the control group or the intervention group, and they got remote retroactive intercessory prayer for the well-being and full recovery of the intervention group.

The length of stay in the hospital, the duration of fever were significantly shorter in the intervention group than in the control group.
