Website Updates, August 2009

3m read

We've launched another round of website updates! Most of the changes are behind the scenes this time and are aimed at making this website easier to manage. However, there are a few notable changes on the public side:

  • Audio Books - We've split out our Audio Books from our Sermons, and created a separate sub-section for each. This is the start of really branching out into other content types than sermons alone.
  • Summary and Map pages - Along with splitting out Sermons and Audio Books into their own sub-sections, we've added a Summary and a Map page to each. These pages show what's in our archive in new ways that haven't really been there before. We hope they make it even easier to find the content you're looking for! Check them out: Sermons Summary, Sermons Map, Audio Books Summary, and Audio Books Map
  • User Accounts - For a long time, we've been receiving requests for more interaction with user accounts. We're listening! This new update brings us much closer to being able to add things like 1) letting each person track what recordings they've downloaded, and 2) letting people subscribe to automated email updates when new recordings are posted. You may notice some small improvements to the Accounts section already, such as being able to enter your Birthday and Mailing Address into your Account profile. More is coming!
  • Internationalization - Much closer attention has been paid this time around to accommodating the preferences of our non-US visitors. You can now configure your account profile with a much wider and more user-friendly selection of timezones and English-speaking dialects. And the website now honors those preferences better than before.
  • "Speakers" are now "People" - With the addition of Audio Books, we now have Narrators and Authors to show you, so using the name "Speakers" just didn't make sense anymore.
  • "Keywords" are now "Topics" - We renamed this section because it wasn't always clear what the name "Keyword" really meant. We feel that "Topics" communicates it a little better.
  • Enhanced Search page - Our Search page has been enhanced. Now, instead of seeing only a list of Recordings matching your search, it also shows People, Topics, Conferences, and other items too.
  • Website Performance - We've made some key performance improvements since the last round of updates in December 2008. This is particularly noticeable on the Search page, but the updates really affect the entire website.
  • "FAQ" is now "Help" - Our Frequently Asked Questions section has been overhauled and renamed to "Help". We wanted to make it easier to find the information you need, and so it was necessary to move from the "Question and Answer" format to a Category-based system that requires less reading.
  • And more! - Look around. There are additional small tweaks you may notice.

One thing you might notice is the removal of detailed Statistics. We've had trouble with this in time past, especially as the amount of website traffic has increased over the years. This makes for an ever-increasing amount of data to process! Regretfully, due to performance slow-downs, we had to leave out most of our Statistics on this latest round of updates. But we intend to bring back the Statistics if at all possible. It may take us a few weeks as the dust settles from all these website updates, and as we determine how best to track the numbers without bogging down our server. (You can still see the Top Recordings stats, though. Log in and they'll appear in the usual places.)

Enjoy! And as usual, we are open to your feedback.
