The Most Helpful Method: Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth

Gracious Heavenly Father, thank you for being so merciful to us today and coming and teaching us one-on-one, speaking to our hearts individually as our eyes read the inspired passages and the scriptures that you have so graciously given to us.

Be with us now as we talk about how to rightly interpret them.

I pray that what I share would only benefit my friends in their individual personal devotional time.

Anoint your servants with your Holy Spirit and speak through him with his session that the people there would receive the blessing that you intended when you brought them and we pray the same for us so bless our meetings now and glorify yourself in Jesus name I pray amen Let's go ahead and begin with a quick review from what we talked about this morning in case someone is new.

I know when there's breakout sessions I'm the guy that has a hard time just going to 1.

I like to I have to hit them all and so especially GYC I have like a mental issue because there's more than humanly possible to attend.

So in case there's someone here for the first time, we are gonna review quickly on what we talked about this morning.

In our first presentation at 9, we had 3 simple points.

The first, we saw that I was an atheist most of my life and that the sinful wicked ways that I lived were deeply ingrained within me.

It's not like I went from being an atheist to a Christian and in 1 day everything just changed and it was sunshine and roses immediately.

There was a real battle with the, I called it the leopard within, that was a very strong leopard and it took something powerful to tame that leopard and to eventually destroy that leopard.

And what it was, it was the power of the word of God.

That as the word of God came into my life, it regenerated me, it changed me, it transformed me, it made me into a new creature.

How many of us want to be new creatures in Christ.

The Word of God is the instrument that God uses to accomplish this work.

And then my daily life was practically impacted and changed by that Word even without extra intention behind it.

A lot of things in my life changed just from studying the Bible and beholding the Bible without telling myself I had to change in these areas.

Such as this morning I gave the example of how I used to struggle with cussing a lot and how by spending time with Jesus and beholding scriptures my language changed, my thoughts changed, my dress started changing, everything about me, my weight changed, praise God for that.

I'm serious I used to weigh 400 pounds so everything changed.

I know if you want to see I'll show you a picture afterward, I almost scare you right?

God is gracious And so practically, practically my life changed on a daily basis as a result of just pouring in the word of God.

Now, if you add intention on top of that, you have a very powerful combination.

On our second seminar, we talked about, in our first thought, history will repeat itself.

And so we need to be very careful to think that we're not going to, or at danger of making the same mistakes as the Jewish nation before us or anyone else for that matter.

If mankind has made a mistake in the past we are likely to repeat their history if we do not pay attention.

And we saw that specifically the Jewish nation had committed a great error.

And it wasn't that they didn't know their Bibles, they had the entire thing memorized for crying out loud.

They put us to shame when it comes to Bible knowledge, intellectual, do you have it memorized in your brain?

But they lacked that relationship with God, the knowledge, the experience with God.

And because of that they drowned out having a relationship and an experience with God for, how do I say, ceremonies and rituals that were Christless.

And we are in the same danger of that today.

You know, you can have a very consistent prayer life that is a very Christless prayer life.

Or a consistent devotional life that is a Christless devotional life.

And so we want to not make the mistake that they made.

They prayed, And they did offerings, they did many things, but it didn't have Christ at the center.

And we don't want to make that mistake, because that was the great error that caused them to miss the first coming of Christ.

And that will be the reason why I believe many will miss the second coming of Christ.

The third thing we saw was what was the remedy?

To spend time daily in the Word of God, getting to know and experience God for yourself.

You know sometimes we study the Bibles and it's good to study with the intention to learn information.

I love learning new stuff And so I really enjoy studying the Bible with the intention of learning, but not more than learning about Jesus.

It's like, oh, this Greek word has this implication.

You're looking at this Greek word and playing with the Greek word, man that's a cool Greek word.

But at the end of the day, if you never knew Greek but you knew Jesus, you're in good hands, amen?

And so I've become more of, I have more of a burden to teach people to study the Bible with the intention of getting to know Christ and in getting to know Christ truth will be made plain.

That's what I believe from the Scriptures.

This afternoon's presentation we're gonna look at the most helpful method of Bible study.

Rightly interpreting, dividing the Word of Truth.

We're gonna look at this in 3 simple points today.

Point number 1, first, that there is a right way to study the Bible.

We're gonna look at that, that there is in fact a proper way to study the Bible.

Number 2, 1 of those proper ways is the verse by verse method.

And the third point we're going to look at is how to practically find the character of God in a biblical passage and try to actually hone in and extract a beautiful picture of who God is so that we can practice doing that for ourselves.

So our first point, rightly interpreting the scripture, 2nd Timothy chapter 2 verse 15.

The Bible says, study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Yeah, a lot of you guys are here at Loma Linda.

You're like, I get twitches when I hear that word.

A workman that needs not to be, what's that word?

I felt ashamed in relation to the Bible 1 time.

I went to give a Bible study to a family and I was studying with this family.

It was a mom, it was a dad, it was a son and his girlfriend at the time and I'm studying with them and I was studying, I think Revelation 13 or something of that nature, where we're talking about fire falling from heaven.

So we're studying 1 of the passages that dealt with fire falling from heaven.

And I was so confident in my Bible study.

I'm giving the Bible study, and if you've never given a Bible study to someone, you're missing out.

It is beautiful to give someone Bible studies and see them on the edge of their seat, like, really, what happens next?

These kids are so excited to learn the Bible, because we take truth for granted when we hear it so often.

And I was giving them this Bible study and they're excited.

They're just leaning forward and they're just, yeah, where are you going?

And I'm like, so we see how fire fell from heaven.

They're like, yes, we see that fire from heaven.

Now if you know Genesis chapter 4 you're probably thinking yourself, but there's no what?

So I go there and we read this story and we're reading Genesis 4 and I'm scratching my head and I'm like, huh?

Looking at Cain and Abel but I ain't seeing no fire here.
