David’s Wilderness Leadership Lessons

Father in heaven, right now we just thank you so much again for Sabbath afternoon.

And Lord we pray the lessons we learn, as simple as they might be, might be applicable to our lives.

Take this message and God multiply it and feed us.

That we may grow closer to you and grow into your image more and more in Jesus name amen.

All right thank you very much thank you very much you know I like sharing this quotation that's a quotation that I you might have heard it before but I shared in different places it's found in not in the Bible it's found in 1 of America's fastest growing restaurants, Pieology.

Anybody here like Pieology or Blaze Pizza or anything like that.

I love those make it, you know, do-it-yourself pizza.

I don't know why it took forever to get those joints going.

But I love Pieology because when you go into Pieology, you'll see different quotes on the wall.

1 of my favorite inspirational quotes, when I go into the Pieology and it's the 1 here in, it's the 1 in Redlands, actually I haven't seen other places, but the 1 in Redlands and It just says this in the midst of all the other quotes and when you get it you get it it says these words The author whoever they are says this I am more afraid of an army of sheep led by a lion than an army of lions led by a sheep.

Today we're going to be talking about some leadership lessons.

I'm not any kind of leadership guru by any means whatsoever.

I'm not any kind of John Maxwell, but I want to share with you some things that I feel God has shown me through experiences, through the scriptures, and just overall the journey that I've had the last few years.

When you study out history, you can take a good look at some of the greatest military commanders, from Leonidas, who led the 300th Sparns along with Greeks at the Battle of Thermopylae, preventing the Persians from coming in for a short period of time.

You think of people like Hannibal, who took a group of elephants and turned them into tanks to conquer his foes.

You think about individuals like Napoleon and George Washington and General MacArthur and Alexander the Great and when you think of leadership many of these names come to mind.

But It wasn't until just like I was going through Patriarchs and Prophets and I came across this amazing quotation about 1 of our favorite Bible heroes, David.

Notice what Ellen White says right here about David.

In his own realm, David's power had become very great.

Now notice this, he commanded as few rulers in any age have been able to command.

Notice this, the affections and allegiance of his people.

This is Ellen White talking here under inspiration, under the Holy Spirit's, you know, guidance and navigation.

And she says, look, David was able to command and gather together the allegiance and affections of his people probably more than most rulers had ever been able to do.

Notice this, He had honored God and God was now honoring him.

And so today we're going to be taking a good look at a few different lessons, simple lessons, but they're deep lessons about David's leadership style.

When you take a good look in the scriptures and you study out what it says in 1st Samuel and parts of 2nd Samuel and 1st Chronicles leading into 2nd Chronicles, you learn about the various phases of David's life.

From the time that life was very quiet for David when he was a shepherd, to the time where he was just thrown onto the world scene, and he began to play a part in the direction of Israel, to the part where he was a fugitive in the wilderness, and until he became king, and on finally his deathbed.

We had to take a Bible archaeology class and 1 day I had eaten some food that just got me sick.

I always take with me charcoal, garlic, and I think it's zinc or something else just to keep my immune system high.

But for some reason, I got sick 1 day, and I ended up missing 1 of the days of touring.

The next day, I felt unusually better, and I jumped back onto the tour with the rest of the Masters of Theological Students and study program.

And we went to go see, this is very interesting, the Dead Sea.

Anybody ever been to the Dead Sea before?

Now, you know what happens when you get into the Dead Sea?

Because of the mineral content, your body naturally floats.

But you know what you're not supposed to do when you get into the Dead Sea?

And I was just in the water, I was swimming with my friends, and I was like, this is great.

And the tour guide had told us many times, he said, look, do not go underwater, do not go underwater, do not go underwater.

And for some reason, you know when you start swimming and you just get caught up in everything that's going on?

Sure enough, that's what happened to me and I came out and I was like, ah, I couldn't see anything.

All my friends are looking at me, they're like, what's wrong?

And I was just blinded and I was like, trying not to make a big scene.

I was rubbing my eyes, it was getting worse.

And then after a few minutes, it finally dissipated.

And the minerals in the Dead Sea are very rejuvenating.

You know, you can buy products here, skin products that probably cost $20, $30, $40, $50.

And so when we were in the Dead Sea, we got out of the water and then we were just having these mud baths during the time we're in the Dead Sea and it was just a wonderful experience.

But when we got out of the Dead Sea, we all jumped back into the bus and we began going down the road.

And I never forgot, I looked to the right and I saw this beautiful mountainous region there.

It looked a little dry, there was a few shrubs there.

And the tour guide, he gets on to the bus, Mike, and he says, this is the wilderness of Judah.

This is where David, during his wilderness wanderings, fled, where he hid with his 600 men, where he was a fugitive, and where he learned many different lessons about the goodness and the grace of God.

Like it says in Psalms 18, to the Lord belongs escapes from death.

It was in this wilderness that trained him and prepped him for the later phase of life when he would become a king.

And so we're going to take a good look at some of the lessons from David's wilderness wanderings that help us to understand what leadership looks like today.

There's not too much inspirational leadership anymore.

I really feel that a lot of leaders, for whatever the reason, have some kind of dark secret in the past which eventually comes out, and it really compromises their influences.

And maybe you think that's just a testament to what the Bible says in the very middle of the Scriptures.

Do you know what the very middle verse of the Bible is?

It's better to put your trust in the Lord than put your trust in princes, right?

I mean, human leaders are going to fail us, right?

But nonetheless, it can be very deflating and defeating when you're even looking within the church and wonder what does inspirational leadership look like?

What's the kind of leadership that really draws people, that gets people excited about spiritual things?

When you look at the life of David you will find several lessons that really made him inspirational.

Lessons that really just can help us understand how we can be a better influence and use social power for good.

So the first thing we're gonna be taking a good look at is a few characteristics.

The first characteristic is this, winsome.

Now I'm going to expand that a little bit more.

Toxic Masculinity and the Proverbs 31 Man

Father in heaven, we just thank you so much again for this third presentation.

We pray and ask that you'd bless us with wisdom, understanding, practicality, and God, most of all, we pray for the Spirit.

The name of the sermon is called Toxic Masculinity and the Proverbs 31 Man.

Toxic Masculinity and the Proverbs 31 Man.

And we're going to be talking about some very interesting concepts today that are relevant.

It's not by any means exhaustive and it may give us more questions than answers, but for the sake of time we will go through this rapid fire, right?

All right, has anybody ever seen this Gillette commercial that came out recently?

Anybody ever seen this Gillette commercial?

And there's a, it's a controversial commercial because you know the slogan for Gillette, right?

Does anybody know the slogan for Gillette?

And it shows this guy in a mirror just shaving right obviously I don't prescribe to Gillette you can see right here but Gillette is very interesting company and like many companies they're entering into sort of the the social foray of many issues and topics that are affecting many people.

And recently they launched a commercial in which they were talking and describing through various kind of acting and scenes what toxic masculinity looks like.

But combined with toxic masculinity, they portrayed men who did not subscribe to this idea of toxic masculinity.

Sometimes we hear that word thrown around by celebrities and movie stars.

Perhaps you know someone who's very ardent about social issues and they talk about toxic masculinity, right?

And it's a word that is more and more starting to be defined.

But 1 of the most recent definitions of this phrase or this word right here is this.

It's a social science term that describes narrow, repressive type of ideas about the male gender role that defines masculinity as exaggerated, masculine traits like being violent, unemotional, sexually aggressive, and so forth.

Also suggests that men who act too emotional or maybe aren't violent enough or don't do all the things that real men do get their man card taken away.

This includes things such as bullying, harassment, and believing notions like boys will be boys.

It refers to masculinity that encourages aggressive and violent behavior and discourages emotion and self-control.

We're living in a world today where people are trying to define what masculinity looks like, right?

We're living in a world today where social media is trying to define what masculinity looks like.

We're living in a world today where celebrities are trying to define what that looks like.

And for many men who are believers in the Word of God, many men who are Christian, many men who are trying to navigate through craziness right now in this part of Earth's history, we're trying to understand what does masculinity actually look like.

But what is so amazing is this, friends, we don't have to go to society, we don't have to go to Hollywood, we don't have to go to YouTube, we can go straight to the Word of God.

And when you study out the life of Christ, you learn what a man of God is truly all about.

And when you study out scriptures, you see very interesting allusions to this idea of masculinity.

If you have your Bible, go to 1 Kings chapter 2.

I want to show you something very interesting.

Here David is on his deathbed and David is trying to gather up enough words.

He's bringing together the lessons of the past, the reflections of his history.

And he wants to give Solomon some words that Solomon would never forget for the rest of his life.

Now the days that David drew near that he should die, he charged Solomon his son.

He wants to tell Solomon something very special, something Solomon should never forget for the rest of his life.

And you can just imagine David has prayed about this, David has reflected upon this, David has thought about this, he understands his son's weaknesses, he understands his son's strengths.

So you can imagine every word he's about to speak are calculated to help Solomon be the man that God's called him to be.

Be strong therefore And prove yourself a what?

David, at the end of his life, David, an old man.

David is telling young Solomon, Look, you're about to step into a very special role, and I'm no longer here to guide you.

But Solomon, you need to understand these words.

Now notice this, he didn't say, look, you were born a man.

He didn't say to him, somehow automatically when you reach a certain age you became a man.

He said, look, you need to prove yourself a man.

And by the way, this is a word or a phrase that is a little bit expanded on.

Ellen White actually talks about masculinity, but she uses the word manly.

In fact, she talks to ladies that are interested in finding someone to marry 1 day and she says this, let a young woman accept as a life companion only 1 who possesses, notice this, Pure, what's that next word?

And by the way, you can read periodically throughout the Spirit of Prophecy, she uses that phrase, manly, Manly, manly, manly.

How do we understand what manliness is all about?

How do we understand what masculinity is all about?

I think that if you apply the word toxic to the word masculinity, it's not masculinity anymore.

Masculinity brings together the virtues that are found in Scripture.

In fact, I love this by the way, does anybody here have a friend Or a female friend that has a shirt that says, I am a Proverbs 31 woman.

You're at their house, and it says, don't mess with me.

Or maybe you think, oh, this will be a cute gift to give my girlfriend 1 day.

Or you'll see some woman working out at the gym, on the back of her shirt says something like, I work out, a woman strengthens her arm, Proverbs 31 woman.

And many times when we talk about Proverbs chapter 31, we generally think to ourselves, oh yeah, that's the chapter that supposedly teaches women how to be women.

But here's the thing, a careful study of Proverbs chapter 31 actually shows us it's not just talking about women, it's talking about men.

And next time someone ever tells you, tells you, look you need to be a Proverbs 31 woman, You need to say to them, you need to be a Proverbs 31 man.

How to BioHack your Health

Father in heaven, we just thank you again for this beautiful Sabbath.

Thank you again for blessing us with your grace and mercy.

We pray that the Holy Spirit would give us practical instruction.

God, This is human wisdom, but we pray for divine wisdom right now.

You know our hearts, our minds, our bodies, how you created us as whole beings.

And Jesus, we ask that you would bless us to be the very best people we can be.

All right, hopefully I don't fall off this thing.

All right, now I know what my dog hero feels like being on a leash.

There are actually multiple definitions of the word biohacking.

It was started by a guy by the name of David Asprey.

Okay, has anybody ever heard of this company called Bulletproof Coffee?

And so are you, brother, because of God's grace, amen?

And so, okay, so David Asprey's this guy who runs this company called bulletproof He nearly died he was dehydrated he was sick he was so weak, and he fell down, he collapsed, some shepherds found him, they brought him back to their tents, and when they brought him back to their tents, they actually gave him this very strange concoction.

And what this tea is, is basically, it is tea, but it uses yak milk.

And that's all it is besides the regular coffee grinds.

And so he took it, he felt so amazing and he's like, yes I feel so great.

He was able to finish his hike, came back to America, tried to duplicate the recipe, and there you have a bulletproof coffee.

Now, I'm not promoting coffee by any means.

I'm just simply saying this is the story.

So anyways, he started growing in popularity because he began to talk about how to hack your body system, how to hack your body system.

And he eventually came up with this term called biohacking, right?

How can we understand a more comprehensive definition?

Biohacking is a process of making changes to your lifestyle in order to hack your body's biology and feel your best.

By biohacking yourself, you can actually transform your body so you feel more energized, be more productive and overall feel like the best possible version of yourself.

Now how many people would love to feel like the best possible version of their self?

I mean, who wouldn't want to feel that way, right?

And so we're going to be talking about some tips, some tricks, some stuff that you can do to hack into your body and things that you can just add on to your lifestyle that can really improve many things, that can improve many things, right?

I did a little bit of this lesson actually at Advent Hope, I think it was a few months ago And I talked about the Daniel diet, right?

The Bible says, talking about Daniel, right?

When you think about health and you think about someone that had just the blessings of good health, good mind, good body, and who's that?

And you learn that he was 10 times wiser.

And there was a presence about Daniel that could be traced to his lifestyle, right?

So when you think about Daniel, you can learn many different lessons.

This is Daniel's advice, advice that we have heard before.

So Daniel said to the steward, whom the chief of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, please test your servants for how many days?

And let them give us vegetables to eat and water to drink." Depending on your translation, it actually may say, pulse.

Pulse actually includes lentils as part of that, right?

Then, let our appearances be examined before you in the appearance of a young man who eat the portion of the king's delicacy, and as you see fit, so deal with your servants." And we learn that Daniel, because he followed these laws, the laws of health, the laws of biology, understanding the way his body and mind works, plus the blessings of God, right?

This was also divine contribution here, 100%.

And because he followed through with these things, God honored him, and he stood out amongst his peers, and God promoted him.

Not just good looks, not just a clear mind.

The very last verse tells us in Daniel chapter 1, Daniel lived until the first year of King Cyrus.

You know what else Daniel was blessed with?

He outlived 3 kings, came to the fourth king, and was able to see part of the fulfillment of the 70 years prophecy that Israel would be in captivity and then eventually let go, be free.

Daniel lived long enough to see prophecy fulfilled.

And when you read the very last chapter, you know Daniel was given the greatest accolade, the greatest blessing of all scripture.

What's the greatest blessing of all scripture?

Daniel was told at the very end of Daniel chapter 12, Daniel, go your way, rest, for you will rise at the end of days.
