And I remember 1 man, he used our product.

He said, you know what, now my grandchildren want to play with me again, because I don't have this wound anymore.

If God could use me, He surely can use you and can probably do greater things.

We have enough problems to solve, for instance, cancer, AIDS, just 2 types of problems of the thousands and thousands of problems and diseases that we have, people struggling.

And that's the thing I feel now, it's like God is saying, I want you to help us, I want you to go and develop, create, and build, and make.

And by the process of blessing others, you will be blessed.

Do you know how it feels like when you've been sitting in a wheelchair your entire life?

And now for the first time you're able to stand up?

Do you know what it feels like to have a chronic wound that's been open and stinking for like 30 years, and now all of a sudden you're using this spray that can heal the wound?

I don't know about you but I can only imagine.

Here is Rivelino Montenegro, he is a missional entrepreneur, scientist and inventor.

He grew up in Brazil, moved to Europe, then to Canada and then back to Germany.

And he has started multiple companies in many countries around the world mostly in the biomedical field.

Now before we talk about those awesome products that change people's lives I started the interview by asking him how he actually became a missional entrepreneur.

Well, actually, when I finished engineering back in Brazil, I went for my first job as an engineer, and I thought that would be my life.

I hated to, I mean, that was the thing that I hated the most.

Sunday night was the worst moment of my life because I thought I would wake up next morning having to go to this company.

I went back to university, did my master's in chemistry.

Then I moved to Germany to do my PhD in chemistry.

And my whole idea was I will become a professor.

I would never ever step again into a company.

So I moved to Toronto in Canada to do my postdoc.

When I joined the University of Toronto as a postdoc fellow, the professor with whom I worked with, she got like investment to start a new company, a startup based on the technology that she had developed in her lab.

It was in the biomedical engineering area.

So she invited me to become a scientist in her startup.

And I told her, well, look, I hate companies.

I had a horrible experience and she explained to me.

Hello, you know what it's You will be a scientist there as well so and The salary will be twice as high at the University.

I loved because in a small environment, in a small startup, the cool thing is you were not only doing 1 thing, you do many things.

You were involved in marketing and finances.

You're involved in the development phase, in the approval phase, bringing to market, all this.

I noticed that I couldn't be confined to a little thing.

So if you are, if you're listening to us now, and if you're a type of person who likes many different things, I believe a startup is a place.

So that's how I moved back to the business world and it changed my life.

When I had my first job back in Brazil, I was 23 years old.

I was fresh from the university, coming to a company.

So The more experience you get, the more material you become.

And also specifically my case, which is in the biomedical field, is the feeling that you have that you are impacting people's lives and their health, you know, and and this is major.

It's so beautiful to see people being healed from their diseases or having a different, like a better quality of life.

So tell me more then, how did it continue?

You joined this company called Smart Biotech, right?

And then you guys, you collected money, you developed a product and it looked really, really great.

What exactly did you develop and how did the story continue?

After I left the university, I went to a startup from my professor.

I then later left that company to start my own.

And that was together with 3 other scientists.

And that's where we started to go with Smart Biotech.

The word smart, not that we're too snobbish, you have to understand, they had actually, it was an acronym, it was actually, each letter was for 1 of the founders.

So and that's I came up with the smart there.

But anyway, the point is we had a beautiful idea but we had not a solid knowledge of business.

We were good scientists, but not good businessmen.

And the problem was, we were not able to raise money.

And 1 of the things that we didn't understand back then was the concept that today is very popular, the minimal viable product, you know, that you have already a prototype that you can show to people that you show it works.

We thought people would believe in our dreams and our ideas and our papers and our patents.

So we left our jobs and we dived in and we learned the hard way that it's not easy, it's not that easy to raise money based on an idea and a dream.

I had to live in a house of a brother from my church for 1 year.

So, The interesting thing out of this is the idea was back then for it was there were actually 2 ideas to treat brain aneurysm.

We were not able to convince anyone in Canada to invest and we lost everything as I said so later on I moved.

And failure, it doesn't mean it's the end of the story.

As long as you learn from this first thing to be humble and and it taught me a big lesson it was very important and then I had a very strong spiritual experience during this time that shaped my life for what I am today so long story short we moved I moved back to Germany in 2006 to start another company because it didn't work in Canada.

I mean, they copied everything and they could do it because we didn't have the patents anymore.

We lost everything because we didn't have money.

So there was a company in the US that pretty much did the same thing we had envisioned.
